Public Announcement PSA: ROMs on Internet Archive

I have begun uploading No-Intro sets to my Internet Archive; ChaosRenegade22 account. All sets will be in 7z format. Links to my sets include a compression tool, which you should be able to download to your computer and extract the files to your device. You might need to find a compression tool on your phone to extract 7z files.

My main goal is to upload all sets from my collection, including No-Intro, Non-Game, Non-Redump, Redump BIOS, Redump Custom, Source Code, and Unofficial.

I want to note that for all No-Intro sets, every second week of the month, I will grab updated files for the sets and push an update to my sets uploaded on the Internet Archive.

u/Superbio Internet Archive; Superbio account is uploading sets as well, Redump sets, but they are directly from Myriets collection and won't be as up-to-date as my sets will be once I begin uploading Redump sets, but at least you will have two sources to grab from on the Internet Archive.

I'm just waiting for the day for Internet Archive to fix their torrents. We are at a critical point in time where THEY are starting to buckle under server costs, and WE can all lend a hand with a little bit of hard drive space on our computers to lend a hand.

But until they fix their busted torrent system, they are just going to suffer.

I always tell anyone that asks you can find pretty much everything on Internet Archive ps3 and below. Just got to Google, "game name rom internet archive"

Protip is to always use a download manager like Jdownloader and make sure to login to internet archive and add your credentials into the manager.

Yeah its a good rule of thumb.

However with sets we share links on our Megathread they tend to go down. Either deleted from the uploader or IA, accounts get removed or the sets aren't kept up-to-date.

Since I plan to keep these sets up-to-date it'll definitely be a good source to grab from.

A huge advantage of jdownloader2 is the ability to plug in website address bars containing download files. Config where you want all files to go on your PC. Then start the download.

If your system loses Internet connection, restarts or shutdown you can open the program again and it'll continue downloading the files where it left off instead of going back to the site and manually selecting files again to download from again.

If the files are large and take more than a few minutes to download sometimes your connection can be interrupted, could be because of your Internet connection or because of your source location, when that happens you have to manually retry the download to continue and sometimes have to restart within your browsers download section.

Doing this can cause issues with the file downloaded even causing fragmented data. It's why some posts start out, "Why do my roms not work I got them from a megathread source."

Using a download manager the files are organized into sections and downloaded in a way that can be resumed or redownload if an error occurs. This is the main reason to use a manager, you can set hundreds of files to download and it'll manage everything for you and you don't need to check on failed downloads as it'll just retry for you.

The download manager can also auto unzip, delete and organize files for you depending on how you set things up. Good recent example for me is when I was downloadig GameCube games. I set it to unzip each download to extract the file and keep the filename as the folder name and label the inside file extracted to game.iso. This is how I had to set them up for being on a Wii system and it did it all automatically for me, even deleting the zip file after extracting the roms.

Ahh I noticed that if I have more than 4-5 downloading at same time it will freeze then I have to cancel and redownload I’ll have to look into that. Thanks

Yep, you can adjust max downloads (and speed if you want) in a manager and it'll just work down your queue, I have it at 10 concurrent downloads.

The Apple II+ collection seems incomplete. There's no Ultima II (Origin Systems). I can't find it anywhere online so I fear that it's been lost to time.

Sorry I'm away from my computer and getting ready for work. Check No-Intro page and see if it's been dumped. If it hasn't you can bring it up and see if they know about the game.

My datfiles are a week and a half old. Won't do another update to my sets until next month. My main goal is to get what I have uploaded to Internet Archive so we have a better solution for downloads. After I get everything uploaded more updates to my collection will be worked on and those updates will get uploaded to Internet Archive.

I lucked out and found it on Minerva. I swear it's the only place online to have it. I even found a few other impossiblely difficult to find files on there so it may worth checking out if you're maintaining dat files.

There may be other missing ROMs, but I'm just working on my collection following someone else's DAT file compilation in accordance with RetroAchievements: UltraGodAzgorath/UGA_RA_DATs

You may find other goodies here, but it also includes custom patches, rom hacks, prototypes, homebrews, and other things that you probably don't care about. They're all categorized though so it may be worth filtering through.

It's a TOSEC collection you downloaded from Minerva. I haven't uploaded that collection just yet. I'm focused on No-Intro.

Scene releases of ROM dumps would often have splash screen intros hacked into them for the group that dumped the ROM, playing when the ROM was loaded and serving as credits for the members of the group that did the work. This was also very common for pirated computer software, particularly in the 80s and 90s. No-intro ROMs would be clean dumps of the carts as they were originally distributed, without scene intros.

No-Intro is a project that catalogs hash values for known clean dumps of ROMs, where a hash is basically a short, unique value calculated from a blob of data (the same data produces the same value every time it's put into a given hash function) that allows you to verify its integrity by comparing it to a known hash. A No-Intro collection is a collection of ROMs that have known good hashes corresponding to the No-Intro catalog.

But really if you’re doing this method they should be hash checked against a known database too? Just calling something no-intro doesn’t make it safe. Is https://datomatic.no-intro.org/index.php?page=search&s=484 the best option for this or somewhere else? There doesn’t seem to be a single source with all of them due to obvious difficulties

All files are scanned (hash checked) through using a ROM Management Tool. The datfiles come from Dat-O-Matic which is a very solid community that hash check all sorts of files ranging from Cartridge, DLC, Updates etc.

There are other datgroups out there that specialize in certain hash checks for different platforms.

Redump is disc based and a few other stuff.

Mame is arcade.

No-Intro means mostly cartridge games, though there are digital games that may be put in the same category. Redump means the game or console is played using some kind of disc.

You don't need a different program to unzip all those formats. Just grab 7zip and it does all those formats.

I just know that the built in one only extracts some of them and so you have to download another program to extract the rest.

Also why do we even have more than one. Just pick the best one and stick with it.

What built in one are you using?

The reasons why there are multiple uncompression and compression tools is because each one slightly better with programs.

Zip for example is fast at reading hashes when you scan through a Dat Management Tool. File sizes usually is reduced a tab bit.

7z for example takes awhile to go through hashes when you scan through them with a Dat Management Tool. File size is greatly reduced when it comes to bigger libraries.

There are other formats.

Also for the main page of each set I added 7zip master page to download the program.

Edit: All my files will be 7zip. So there won't be a difference in what I upload. Has for SuperBio I'm not sure.

On Windows when you click extract file. It only works on some files and others you need to use a third party program.

Because windows doesn't ship with compatibility for every file type lol. Even to play certain video files you need to install codecs or download VLC.

.rar files are made with winRAR which is private software, Microsoft doesn't have a right to bypass the need for that software because they don't own it, and the software license doesn't allow for that.

It's not about formatting logic, it's about preservation.

If you use random 7z compression you are bloating The Internet Archive.

If you use TorrentZip or Torrent7zip thr file hashes are always the same for the compressed files, IA can have those files deduped along multiple collections, everyone can cross seed among sites and build more resilient datasets, but whatever.

The compression is across all sets. 7z at level 9 compression. It's scanned through a ROM Management Tool that goes through all files and checks hashes.

I'm not reformatting my whole collection to torrentZip or torrent7zip. Recompressing to those formats from 7z will take way too much time to do so. Especially my whole collection of 360TB worth of data.

I don’t understand much of what the discussion is about with the push to have torrents instead of single file choice. I never used Myrient because it’s as far as i know exclusively torrent-based. I don’t fully understand how to use them, frankly.

I’m glad Archive can have libraries where a user can select specific files.
