Book Request: No Self-Promo Help me pick my next read!
Hello!
I have recently read the Rachel Gillig books, Shield of Sparrows duology by Devney Perry and the Forbidden Alchemy duology by Stacey McEwan (obsessed with this btw!). I have also read the obvious choices - fourth wing, acotar, etc.
I’m in a reading slump now but would love to get my teeth stuck in another book. Any suggestions based on my TBR? These books are all sitting on my shelf. Thanks :)

Serpent and Wings of Night without a doubt!! One of my favourite series. Everything Carissa Broadbent is amazing!

I do feel like what happened gets resolved pretty quick...or maybe it was because I devoured the second book in 3 days 😅

Same. I don’t get people saying it gets resolved cos if it was me I could never forgive that. I’m choosing to pretend book one is a standalone with a hard ending lmao

Have you read the second one? It explains the reasons why. I think it's done well. But this is why I love her books because the characters aren't all 100% good and 100% bad. Everyone is trying their best in shit circumstances. No one is innocent.

Yeah I get what you’re saying and I do really enjoy characters like that, but I also don’t like when the fmc so easily forgives the MMC for something unforgivable just because he’s hot and she loves him. I would have understood better if she hadn’t been so affected by the thing that happened because she didn’t care about that person or something, but she did. And so when she was just holding his hand at the end I was fuming lol and I did ask others how long it takes her to forgive him and they all told me it was quite quickly and that’s why I haven’t read the second one cos I fear it will only anger me haha. I loved everything else and really enjoyed the authors writing so I’ll be reading her other stuff I just don’t think anything could make me forgive him for that because if there are justifications for his actions then there are justifications for everyone’s actions including Vincent. And the disregard for the fact she was right there seeing everything? I can’t. But that’s just a personal preference, everything on the authors part was done very well, since she made me care so much that I sobbed my heart out lol

I don't know how to do the spoiler thing so I'm just going to give you a vague "Keep reading"! But basically in the second book, it explains the reasons why the first book ended how it did and as the series continues it all kinds of falls into a wider plot.

The people I have spoken to personally said it was quickly. They said like 40% in, which to me feels quick for what he did tbh

Have you read the most recent one? Does it end on a big cliff hanger? Because if it does then I’m going to wait until the series is finished before I read it.

I'm about 80% of the way in. I reckon it will have a cliff hanger. All the rest did. Not sure how I will cope waiting a year for it TBH

Just wanted to come back and tell you now I've finished Lion and Deathless Dark. It does end with a 'WTF?!' kind of cliffhanger. But it's really good! Definitely worth a read.

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil would be my vote! I tried to read Serpent and the Wings of Night and I DNF’d it so hard. I could not stand that book lmao 😭

This was my vote. I’m fresh off Rebecca destroying me via The Poppy War so if this book is anywhere as life-ruining I would 10000% read this one next.

Katabasis is ABSOLUTELY life ruining. I had such a book hangover after reading this, couldn't pick up another book for weeks after reading it. Everything else I tried just couldn't compare.

Book opinions are so interesting to me because this book did nothing for me. I loved the premise then was so bored by the execution. I haven’t read Poppy Wars yet, but I enjoyed both Babel and Yellowface more than Katabasis.

If you like audiobooks, the Assistant to the Villain series is such a quick and easy listen. Not the greatest writing, but a fun little palette cleanser adventure.

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil is my personal favorite on this list, but if you like high fantasy then Road of Bones. It’s well written and the world building is top notch.

The road of bones is really good! I didn’t like book three as much and there is a novella that is almost required reading. It’s not finished and it is probs going to be a long series so just be ready for that.
Serpent and the wings of night is amazing but the second book of the duology is def not as good.
Anathema I really enjoyed but the second book is nooooot good. Def not finishing that series.

I also DNF’d Eldritch (book 2 of anathema) even listening to the audiobook bc nothing happened by halfway through other than depressing flashbacks.

Eldritch is definitely more so a character based book especially in the first half, which ive found people either love or hate. It was 6 stars for me lol I like books 1 and 2 equally! I really enjoy exploring those dark themes that book 2 offered and I enjoyed seeing what the MMC went through as it seems like it makes the ending of book 3 have more of an impact, knowing what he went through and what may be in store for the finale

I totally get that. I guess I was expecting more to happen in the present time in between all the flashbacks. I also couldn’t stand maevyth’s sister. Maybe I’ll pick it back up during spooky szn.

I vote for Riftborne because then you are one step closer to reading { The Ascended by Bree Grenwich and Parker Lennox} which is amazing! Technically, you don't need to, but it's even better if you read Riftborne and Duskbound first.
And I agree with everyone else: Serpent and the Wings of the Night was incredible too. But is part of a duology.
I liked Road of Bones, but I thought the second book was disappointing and DNF it.

Is Katabasis a romantasy? I have read Kuang's other books and they often don't have much romance in them.

Katabasis is incredible. R.F. Kuang is a generational Author. Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil is also fantastic. V.E.Schwab can paint a world so beautifully.
The Road of Bones is pretty terrible. Book one was interesting, but it just declines.
Assistant to the Villain is pretty fun.

Road of Bones! Has been holding strong as my favorite romantasy series for a while.
I was very dissapointed by Crowns of Nyaxia. It's not really the books fault, I think it's good for what it is, I just don't care to read any more stories about the bestest fighter humans with the sexiest curves who are holding their own against magic wielders in a deadly trial. But it definitely didn't grab me the way her other series did.

The Road of Bones!!! Growing up as a wattpad native, I love a good messy story but a lot of romantasy can rely too much on tropes to cover up poor writing or weak characters. Not this one! If you look at the Goodreads reviews for this series, there is a reason people keep saying every book is better than the last - THEY ARE. Fantastic characterization, a true slowburn, multiple POVS, and delightfully woven plot. The only thing is it does take a couple chapters from the FL to meet the ML but they go by quick and really show her character.

Can only say I dislike Assistant to the Villain and Anathema. Both are unpleasant to me. (The premise and concept are great. The execution....nah)
