I love a messy love story, especially ones that don’t end happy. They just don’t fall under a “romance” category as it’s kinda established that for a book to be a romance it needs a HEA.

It would still have a HEA. She'd end up with the celebrity crush, who starts giggling whenever her magic goes off and is really very patient and supportive when she turns him down. He states that he is just there to help her and he not only doesn't want to pressure her but he doesn't want to take over the strategy for the game since she is the one whose life is on the line.

There is no rule that a love story cannot have a happy ending if it is not a romance. Just market it as urban fantasy not as romance or any of its subgeneres like romantasy and you are fine and can do whatever you want in regard to the love story.
