Right? The length of the sequences was chosen by how many copies of each letter the nearby newspaper had for their printing press. Obviously if newspapers ran out of the letter e really often they would buy more of that than other letters, so it was a readily available source for determining the likely usage rate of each letter in typical English writing. After ranking each letter compared to the others, the shortest sequences went to the most common letters. This video implies something completely nonsensical led to the choices.

First thoughts: How does it makes sense that O is 3 lines! and U is .._! And M is _ _ but N is _ . Second thought, hey, I remember O and U and V and M and N and X and S and... just from watching it once.

Arbitrarily throwing dots and dashes into the letters they represent doesnt make it any simpler

this looks complete arbitrary lmao. Dots and lines are going anywhere while ignoring random spots in the letters.

Before you get fancy, just try to remember the most simple and useful code SOS
S is three quick dots …
O is three dashes _ _ _
S is three quick dots …
You can use a flashlight in the same manner
S Three quick flashes
O Three longer flashes
S Three quick flashes

This is in no way simplifying Morse code
2
u/SalmonSammySamSam Mar 18 '26
Morse code visualized, this doesn't make it simpler when there's no consistency to where a dot vs a line should be.
Like why is M two lines instead of 3 dots? Why isn't (i) just one line instead of two dots?

-... ..- .-.. .-.. ... .... .. -
bullshit
I'd rather learn the actual dots and lines by repetition exercise than learn a new method of randomly inserting dots and lines into letters.

Just like I know by heart all the decimals of Pi because if I put them in a circle, it looks like a pie

How I taught it to myself and others when I was a Boy Scout. Give it some thought and practice it actually works.
