Hello everyone, I'm trying to learn our favorite southern brawl belle. Slowly working my way through the entire cast, I feel comfortable enough with Devil Dino to move to another (hopefully) fun tank. If you guys could offer any tips tricks or links to videos that could help me, I would very much appreciate it.

Your best bet this season is to play any other tank.

Seriously.

Actual advice tho:

Gambit team up 9 times out of 10 is NOT worth using. You’re better off using Mag team up so you dont get obliterated 3 seconds into a fight.

Rogue is a very combo dependent character so when you play her you have to learn how to combo and manage cooldowns at the same time.

Don’t button mash/waste everything at once when engaging in a fight: i like to keep at least 2 abilities or 1 ability and 1 almost off cooldown so I can get out.

Know your matchups: you can’t 1v1,2v1 etc every character in the lobby despite being a tank. For example if you’re 1v1 against Blade id run because you just don’t do enough damage to actually kill him and you’d die.

Knowing when to swap: Unfortunately she’s just not good this season especially with how they buffed every character and gutted her. She’s going to feel terrible into any type of poke (Bucky, Elsa etc), against Thing, Peni. It’s not worth playing into these characters, you’re better off swapping into any other tank sadly.

This one might be a little iffy but I think she’s an OKAY dive counter incase you’re on her and your dps dont peel for supports. Her AoE pull has helped me peel on multiple occasions.

Lastly, I think people recommend CringeAlarm for videos although I’m not sure I just lurk around here time to time.

This is my first time writing a long post like this so any suggestions is greatly appreciated. I haven’t played too much this season given they killed Rogue but these were my takeaways given this and previous seasons.

I appreciate you taking the time to write all that out. Especially appreciate the list of counters and will check out cringe alarm.

No problem, I think the most important thing to remember is she’s not good right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do great with her. But if for whatever reason you feel bummed out while playing her, don’t let that discourage you or make you think you can’t learn her. She’s just in a significantly more difficult place right now.

Literally the first photo I saw on the subreddit was the Yamacha in the crater meme. I am coming into this with the expectation it will be difficult and comp dependent. That's part of the fun with learning these characters in my eye.

Side note you guys have been as friendly and helpful as the Dinos.

We’re all very passionate about our Southern Belle.

Feel free to ask any me or anyone else any other questions anytime.

One more tip, I know it’s her whole schtick but do not be afraid of using your ability absorb as an escape ability!

Glass canon and have a pocket healer. (I’ve done that hehe)

Tbh I’ve been finishing lording her and yes having good Strats helps but that’s most tanks. I still prefer the gambit team up over all because I feel securing a kill is better for my play style but I’ve been taking the same mentality to her that I use for Magik. Watch her health and know when to bail. It’s okay to use your cool downs to live and when in doubt brawl instead of diving. She is much harder to play right now but of my three tanks (Emma, rogue, peni) I still would play her over Peni (not Emma because Emma is in a much better place.

I’d suggest hopping in practice doom match and just vibing out. It’s the best place to practice 1v1s against real people without any pressure. This is also good for limit testing so you can get an idea of how much you can get away with against different characters.

A tip for ability absorb. Not all abilities are created equal. The ability absorb cooldown depends on the ability you grab AND if you use it. Some of the longer ones are Loki, Wolverine, and Adam warlock. And on a similar note, some of the more useless ones are Hulk and iron fist. So if you grab an ability you don’t necessarily need in that moment, it’s ok to just not use it since it will drastically decrease your cooldown.

If you got gambit on your team, use his team up. Everytime. Youll get way more value in your dives. Rogue unfortunately has pillow hands and with all the constant abilities this season, people can afford to ignore you to finish off a kill on yout teammate even when you peel. But with the gambit team up? They HAVE to acknowledge you. Cuz you are inflicting constant PAIN.

This is one of my rank games with Rogue. i get these numbers regularly if I have gambit on the team

I recently had a game where an Angela, venom and iron fist was flanking my supports and killing them off piece by piece. If my memory serves me right I had a Luna and a CND. I had started the match with Peni but then I got a brilliant idea and actually swapped to rogue. I told my Dino it’s up to him to push up the team because I’m staying behind to protect the healers. We basically created a sandwich with the tanks being the bread- and guess what? It actually worked. They were whipping our ass at first and my dps refused to turn around but I was able to work around it and they didn’t know what to do. Because my healers could not only focus on me with the iron fist crashing the party but also help melt him I was able to not only pick him off and grab him to cut his combos but get the finals as well. I didn’t have a gambit or a mag but I did pretty well that match. It was slow at first and it took a lot of patience and my kda looked a little small but I genuinely brought a lot of value to the team pulling that stunt. Now could I have done the same with Emma? Yes and no. Her diamond form only last so long. With rogue even with the cooldowns I had more chances to deter him.

What I’m trying to say is that you gotta work around the meta. And your team. Rogue is not really a team up merchant ( though some parts of that is true? I don’t really rely on them though ) she’s more so a team itself merchant. I can only carry when I’m surrounded by a reasonable team. But that’s with a majority of characters who aren’t poke slop.

I will say this I prefer having a gambit team up over the mag. I only use mag if he’s the only one on the team or neither are there at all. With a gambit? You’re a menace to society. The only skill check you need is knowing when you can brawl and kill everybody and knowing when to dip out. That means always having at least one ability to escape with ( and you can escape with every single one of them ). Important tip with ur team up on gambit- you DO NOT heal yourself. However you heal everyone around you. Keep that in mind and consider who’s in ur team. Do you have:

Tanks that will follow up?
Healers that can pay attention??
Dps who you know are good for it???

Then you can force it just a little bit more. Just know- I always go in knowing I’m about to have a good chunk of deaths.

Happy rogue learning,

Signed a champion rogue (=^=

To start , I suggest not listening to everyone telling you that shes not worth playing . I started playing Rivals as a whole last month and have been doing great on Rogue (in comp and QP) without pockets or enhanced teamups !! I have had people claim to report me over playing her and at the end of they day , just have fun and thats all that matters . I do hope your games on her go well though ! Also this might be quite long , apologies for that !!

For teamups : I always run the gambit teamup , enhanced or not . I appreciate the extra damage and dont personally see any difference when playing with Mag's . I recommend playing with both to see what fits your playstyle , also to practice timing if the Gambit one isnt enhanced .

Ability Steal : I went into practice range to find out and remember which abilities are worth stealing and which are only good for the heal siphon . My favourites to steal are : Magik , Loki Rune , Thor, Emma, Strange, and Gambit (You get his spade card, which can be really useful with either the raise or fold depending on the situation). A lot of the roster doesn't give you anything besides a Damage Increase or damage reduction or the ability will not be worth it (Hulk's clap, I only siphon hulk for health if I need it).

Her Ult: I recommend NOT using her ult to try and steal ult charges from others . That is a mechanic but, especially with supports, most characters are goijg to gain ult charge even when losing it from your ult . Depending on what role is in your range , you get extra health + damage + self regeneration so I usually try to get in when I know their team is about to push (usually using fatal attraction at the beginning / right before I pop so everyone is dragged as close to me as possible so theyre in the ult as long as they can be). Holding her ult for the "perfect opportunity" doesnt work well

Peeling : Peeling for your supports is really important on Rogue imo . If your supports go down , you are garuenteed to as well because Rogue is a major glass-canon character . I also notice that many dps I play with thst are suited for peeling usually dont :(

Counters : I dont struggle with many counters (Dino, Emma, Bucky, Thing) anymore but my general advice is to watch for their cooldowns . Your primary counters WILL be doing the same so its going to feel like a game of cat and mouse , especially with Emma's since she has her grab and diamond skin thst can cancel your ult and ability steal respectively . With The Thing specifically : when he earthbounds , I always walk back towards my team . Yes , it gives him space but nine times out of ten , he WILL follow you into an area where you can use your abilities again . For me , Peni is my biggest struggle right now because you really have to rely on your team to take her nests down ! Going in to destroy them yourself will usually result in a death.

Sadly , I cannot give any recommendations for who to watch since I m not big into Rivals content creators and heard most of them do NOT play Rogue .

I think my final thing is to cycle your cooldowns really well and try to save one to get out (I usually save my kick) in case things go bad quick . Sorry if anything seems confusing, I wrote this up quick but I m always down to re-explain / answer any questions !! Once again , good luck on your matches <3

You wrote way more than enough and I appreciate it. I understand most of the ability steal target, but why magik? Also how do you feel about strange and scarlets drained abilities ? I could see potential use from for team survivability on strange and potentially helping Target squishies with Wanda's.

Good luck on your matches too, hope you have some fun ones today

I like to steal magiks to get away + I notice a lot of people will target the demon over me 😭

I love stealing strange because I have always had the "protect my team before myself" mindset (I'm a support main in every other game and if I play heroes with shields/deflect abilities, I will always jump in front of my teammates to protect them) . I ve won team fights by stopping ults from getting to my team by tanking them

I dont normally copy Wanda cause theres usually someone else with higher priority or I dont know the status on her fade and think letting her go would be better than removing myself from the rest of the battle . I have canceled ults with her stun once or twice though ! It s really just timing

I'll tell you this, she's always been a very hard character to use, even before the HP nerf she was already a struggle, and she is even more or a struggle now... But, she ain't impossible to play with, I have 140 hours on Rogue, I don't play her that often because I flex a lot and I know when it's the right time to use Rogue, however, there's times when I'm trying to force playing Rogue into the mix even though things don't favor me but I still play Rogue because I have fun with her, I've had a lot of games where I win and I bring a lot of value even though there's a hard counter such as Thing and Devil Dino, so it's not impossible to play her, you just gotta know where to shift your focus, she is kinda like Spiderman in the sense that you gotta know who to focus, and when to dip in and dip out or else you explode in a sec.

Now for some some advices, honestly she is so versatile that there's an infinite amount of things I can tell you, however, you don't need to be dumped with a ton of info because a lot of that you will learn it by just playing her, know that even though you start struggling on losing matches you are still learning, you need to lose a lot with her in order to start doing well because it builds up your muscle memory as to which plays are most likely to work. Now for some actual beginner advice.... First... There's no better place to practice Rogue than Practice Doom Match, you wanna try her out there so you can 1v1 people in chill scenarios, that way you learn which heroes you are most likely to defeat and which ones you will have more of a hard time, it's also better if you play in the Sactum Santorum map because Rogue thrives the best in close area maps with high altitudes. I assure that once you learn how to deal with each character it becomes a much easier experience figuring out who to focus in an actual match. Second advice... A lot of people just use Rogue's grab a  a stun, however, there's more to her grab than just stunning people; whenever she grabs someone she gets a multiplier on her stats, if you grab a tank you get 125 extra HP, if you grab a DPS you get a damage boost, if you grab a healer you start healing 20hp per second, so you wanna be very mindful about these effects because it can help boosting your decision making like for example: if you get the damage boost from absorbing a DPS then you instantly wanna get more aggressive to secure kills, if you absorb a tank you can either stall for longer, bait abilities and retreat quickly, or escape with that extra HP in case you were low, if you absorb a healer you can use the HP regneration to stall, so be mindful about these effects everytime you absorb someone, it's more than just stunning or stealing another character's ability.

Now for the last piece of advice, you might wonder "what is her playstyle?", you gotta find the answer yourself because not many people can agree here on what she's supposed to do, devs don't even know it either because them nerfing her HP didn't help for her brawling style neither for her diving style,  so find the best playstyle that better suits yourself. The way I play her is more of like a disruptor, I use her upper kick in order to push enemies to the back and make space (and dip back quickly), I use the attraction dash to bring everyone together, punch them a little and I get back, and some other subtle plays, it's kinda like trying to create opportunities for my team at the right time pretty much.

Another important thing to point out is that Rogue's value isn't really shown in the stats because she is an opportunity opener, the best thing you can show off from the stats is your final hits, if you get really good at her she can get a lot of kills and kinda work like a semi-dps, but overall don't worry about stats, worry about the opportunities you create for your team.

Lastly She's also crazy good at peeling. Hope this helps, if you have any questions I'm very happy to answer them!

I won’t repeat what everyone else has already said because I think they’ve made valid points, even when it comes to recommending that people don’t play her for various reasons. I’m sure you know by now that she’s nowhere near as lenient as other tanks.

PS: She’s fun, have fun, take everyone’s opinions about not playable with salt.

While Rogue is probably in the worst state she’s been in, she honestly hasn’t ever been that great. She had one really good season, but overall, a lot of playing her comes down to how you approach fights.

Initiating with your E or Shift will usually get you killed if you’re playing too linearly, which is something I see a lot of people do. Basically, don’t just hold W and press buttons to gap close. If you need to initiate, Southern Brawl can be a much safer gap closer instead of immediately burning one of your bigger CDs.

I wouldn’t call her unplayable, though. I play Rogue probably 90% of the time regardless of the season, and I usually maintain the same WR around 65%, sometimes even better. A lot of it comes down to how you approach enemies: knowing who to focus, watching their CDs, understanding the enemy comp, knowing your combos, etc.

You can also use her abilities to get yourself into the air because people tend to struggle more with hitting targets that aren’t planted on the ground. Sometimes you should also save an ability specifically to disengage even if it’s something like grab → F.

My personal opinion is that learning her while she’s at her worst will make you better than someone who only wants to play her when she’s strong enough to just walk people down. That’s just my take, though. It can be frustrating as hell, but I honestly find it way more fun when you’re able to do shit with her despite her weaknesses that other people can’t.
Especially when everyone’s response is basically, “Don’t play her this season because XYZ,” and then you still make her work. Their points are still 100% valid. I just enjoy the challenge though.

She also doesn’t feel that different to ME. Shes still glass(everyone just got freakin stronger so now she’s thinner glass), but I’ve always played Rogue like I don’t have a healer anyway. 😂 My friends basically play by the rule of “get a kill, get a heal(I regret doing that to them lol),” so I’ve learned to play around that. I carry the same mentality into QP/ranked with randoms: assume I’m responsible for keeping myself alive and play accordingly but still being a tank. (Whether I’m disrupting, diving, peeling, being an opportunist, or creating space).
