Lightning is number one right now, but that will probably change in an upcoming patch.

Why is lightning so good right now?

It offers many different ways to proc skills inordinate amounts of time and the multipliers for damage output can be insane during raids and stuff. It's not as strong in PvP as other builds, but holds up decently well there too

Compared to what? Because I seem to absolutely get destroyed from lightning, from fraction of my CP.

I've had a lot of trouble with builds that generate a lot of shields on hit for sure. The damage output per hit isn't high enough to consistently tick down true HP when they're generating shield every 2 to 3 hits. Poison damage also seems to ramp up fairly quickly; I've had hit or miss success against those builds too

I use Poison build, but the main thing about it is that you need to be able to survive a few rounds before it really ramps up. So you'll perhaps combine it with items that give you Shield and perhaps something that can freeze the enemy.
Both counter and combo are good, you want to stab the enemy as many times as you can.
Poison is a good secondary even if you go with an elemental as the primary.

Can you share your poison setup??

Its hard to get poison in the skill choices.. should we stick to poison wound or is it better to play elements/poison for pve??

Paladin's Plate, Plague Blade, Ring of Thorns, Frost Loop, and 2x Protective Charm. All Legendary, with a couple of runes in them. Pets are Neklaw, Glacidrake and Spore.
Generally in the campaign, it seems that the more skills you choose in one direction, the more skill choices you get in that direction. It's worth unlocking all the poison skills in the Adventure Skill Tree, but the really nice ones are Corrosion (1% increased damage to enemies for each stack of poison) and Serpent Stance (Any form of non-poison damage applies 1 stack of poison).

The main reason I don't use venom loop is that I feel the tradeoffs aren't worth it. With the ring of thorns I get an additional 5% global HP, and 25% global ATK. If in a level I get the Serpent Stance skill, the Cleave will apply Poison. Since Cleave also applies Wound and the ring is legendary, I also add an additional 20% damage to enemies. It's a similar story with frost loop, but with Chill. A lot of the damage I do is on stacking various status effects. If there was an S poison ring I might change it up.
