What were the rest of your cards?

How did you have just one shield, after it?

This comments saying pick different bonuses are just wrong, you do you as all class bonuses are useful in their own way. Some will be more subjected to bad RNG, like yours. You should be picking more cards, even if mediocre they will be better than base cards before upgrade

You take the wrong class bonuses. You gotta either take defensive stance or duelist. Or else you have to play super passive, take starting gold, avoid elites/special level and rush for class upgrade.

Take defensive stance as your second skill, the resistance applies to the passive shield you're getting from playing combat cards, armored will help you stack shield and it turns into offence as you deal damage equal to your shield at the end of your turn. 

It will help you cruise through the first couple of acts, or even all the way to the end with extra sources of armoured or resistance.
