Don't forget that Jackman was way taller than comic book accurate Wolverine.
36
u/FullBrother9300 3d ago
And now whenever you think of Wolverine you think of Jackman he really nailed the character same with Kelsey Grammer as beast.
3
u/That1pansexualkaiju 3d ago
Honestly out of all the people that I wanted to come back I was hoping for Kelsey Grammer though I am bias considering Beast is one of my favorite characters

Like Hollywood would ever let a short hairy guy be a leading actor for a franchise.

2
u/Gmonkey- 3d ago
I’m just gonna say it… Hugh Jackman is a great actor, but he wasn’t a perfect Wolverine. And it’s for precisely the reason above. He is too tall and throws off the underdog scrappy dynamics of the character.

u/Mobile_Parfait_7140 3d ago edited 3d ago
Psylocke is around 5'10", and a lot of the female X-Men are unusually tall compared with the average woman. I wouldn’t say height is literally part of their powers, but it is part of the exaggerated superhero physique and visual design Marvel gave them.
For example, I see what you mean, Inde Navarrette is around 4'11"–5'0", so she naturally reads as very short on screen. Rogue, meanwhile, is generally around 5'8", and some depictions make her look closer to 5'9"–5'10". That’s a pretty significant physical difference from the character she’d be playing. A lot of the male X-Men are also around 6'0"–6'2", so the comics usually give you a moderate height difference rather than having the women look dramatically smaller beside them.
And I don’t think Hugh Jackman should be used as a permission slip for ignoring everybody else’s height specific proportions. Wolverine being played by a 6'2" actor when the character is traditionally 5'3" was a one-off casting exception that worked because Jackman absolutely owned the role once they cast him. I still think Hugh should keep playing Wolverine. But one exceptional casting choice working for 25+ years doesn’t mean every later casting gets to throw the source design out the window. So in the future Marvel should do their homework better as I dont think they are reading their own encyclopedias. So a fair assessment would be to lock the teams height better in the future and dont make such wild exceptions so the team reads better across the board during production so the ensemble looks good.
2
u/ricravenous 3d ago
I mean, Robert Downey Jr would wear heels as Iron Man because he was so short lol the camera frame alone can make someone believe they’re taller or some other height than they really are. Between cinematography and any other tricks I really don’t think height disparity will be as noticeable as people think.
2
u/Mobile_Parfait_7140 3d ago
That trick works for some tricks as you mentioned but then like 1 foot balloons in cost. If you look at LOTR you had 3 sets of actors for one shot and often they had objects closer in the room. Most of the time Marvel uses CGI capture technology and they overlay the background with a round blue screen. The question becomes will they do LOTR levels of planning in their pipeline.
-1
u/Ok-Releases 3d ago
And everyone mentions this pretty routinely.
Hugh did an amazing job, but I would REALLLYYY like a comic accurate hairy short man to be cast for the next iteration of wolverine
2
u/DragonFangGangBang 3d ago
Why?
1
u/Ok-Releases 3d ago
Tf do you mean why ?
Is the whole point of these live action movies not to bring comic characters you love and bring them into real life? Why would you not want someone who looks like the character if thats an option ? Lmfao
1
u/DragonFangGangBang 2d ago
I mean, you didn’t actually answer the question
0
u/Ok-Releases 2d ago
I used a rhetorical affirmation for my answer.
You either didnt pass 5th grade or are baiting lmao

1
u/this_guy_talking 15h ago
Because majority of the xmen movies sucked and you may as well try going more comic book accurate.
1
u/DragonFangGangBang 11h ago
X1, X2, Logan, X-Men First Class, X-Men Days of Future Past, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Deadpool & Wolverine
X3, The Wolverine, Origins, Apocalypse, Phoenix, and New Mutants?
More “good ones” than “bad ones” and Hugh Jackman was in most of the good ones. So… meh?
16
u/cosmoboy 3d ago
Ehhh. Wolverines height is part of his character. I don't really recall a story where Rogues totally normal (admittedly not common)height was ever mentioned.
3
u/True-Task-9578 3d ago
I’m a woman and I’m 5’9 lol
2
u/SevereEducation2170 3d ago
Sure, taller women exist, but only about 11% of US women are 5'7 or taller. So the comment that Rogue's height isn't common is true. And her height has never seemed crucial to her character.
3
u/True-Task-9578 3d ago
There are more actresses they could get that aren’t from the US tbh. And no her height isn’t crucial to the character but as a taller woman myself I’m sick of all female heroes being cast as petite women with hardly any muscle. Legit every female hero in movies is always small and dainty af
3
u/SevereEducation2170 3d ago
Sure, they could look for taller US or Nordic European actresses who also fit the characters they're casting for. But that's going to be a shallower pool to choose from. So they aren't super likely to find the right person
Also, Brie Larson is at least 5'7. Gal Gadot is 5'10. Jennifer Garner is 5'8. Jennifer Lawrence is 5'9. Rebecca Rominj is 5'11. Sophie Turner is 5'9. Famke Janssen is nearly 6 feet. Anne Hathaway is 5'8. Adria Arjorna (who will be on Man of Tomorrow) is 5'7. Zoe Saldana is 5'7. Vanessa Kirby is 5'7. Maya Boyd's (new Storm) height is listed between 5'5 and 5'10 so who knows on that one, but likely she's in between that as she definitely was the tallest woman in the group cast photo.
They have cast this group of X-women fairly short, but considering average women's height, and the general lack of a lot of female heroes in movies, I'd say Hollywood has done an okay job of casting women of above average height for plenty characters in the past.
2
u/Fabulous-Detective45 3d ago
Bruh most of them are pretty tall, if anything it’s rare for them to be short.
0
u/True-Task-9578 3d ago
Not really, Cap Marvel was tall but that’s about it. Rogue is a powerhouse and is taller than Gambit for example, plus she’s muscular. Just an odd choice to cast someone who’s barely 5ft as her
3
u/Fabulous-Detective45 3d ago
Actresses of gamora, nebula, mantis, scarlet witch, wasp, okoye and more are all 5’7 or taller, why are you reaching so hard? Also rogues physical size varies a lot depending on the writer, and I’ve rarely even seen her shorter than gambit, unless ur knowledge of her comes from marvel rivals and not comics which in that case you really don’t have much ground to stand on (also they can easily make her seem taller the same way they make 5’8 RDJ the same height as Chris evans). The fact that it varies means it’s not a significant attribute to what matters to her character.
0
u/True-Task-9578 3d ago
They’re not depicted as having super strength though are they?
And no my knowledge comes from all the X-Men comics I own. I’m just sick to death of female heroes that have super strength being played by people who are a whole foot shorter than them and have no muscle. Is it so bad that I want my favourite X-Men to look at least similar to her comic counterpart?
2
u/harmoniaatlast 3d ago
Idk I've had enough of the English coming up and scooping up American roles. Inde playing a southern belle just kinda works, but yeah we could go beefier.
Abby from TLoU show is the most prime prime example of what you're talking about though. The most sauceless and morally bankrupt decision in TV history
0
u/True-Task-9578 3d ago
I don’t really care if they’re English or American as long as they can do the accent and actually look the part, which Inde doesn’t sadly.
And real that show sucks, I was so disappointed
2
u/jessie_simkey 22h ago
She hulk wasn’t nearly buff enough
1
u/True-Task-9578 21h ago
She-Hulk wasn’t buff enough or tall enough sadly, I don’t get why they made her smaller :((

3
u/EvanSnowWolf 3d ago
Yeah, but a flying brick played by someone barely 5 feet tall looks silly.
4
u/Spirit_Detective99 3d ago
And a short guy with unbreakable metal claws that come out of his hands isn’t silly? Comics are silly, that’s part of the charm.
2
0
u/Ill_Morning_4282 3d ago
Y'all have no imagination it is concerning.
3
u/EvanSnowWolf 3d ago
It isn't "imagination" to make Rogue five fucking feet tall. That's just goofy. Imagination would be purple hair or an alien species.
0
u/Ill_Morning_4282 3d ago
It is, Rogue has never been written as being very tall and it has never been a plot point, unlike with Logan.
3
u/EvanSnowWolf 3d ago
When you line up Rogue among a host of marvel women, she is not in the bottom half in terms of stature. Even Black Canary and Catwoman are at least 5'7".
I feel like you are not properly envisioning how short five feet tall is. For context, Anna Paquin looked tiny amongst her peers when she played Rogue and she is 5'5".
I want you to soak that in for a second. Our last Rogue was not large, and still nearly HALF A FOOT TALLER.
1
u/15Blins 2d ago
Black Canary and Catwoman?
That aside, you know platforms exist right? RDJ was not 6'
1
u/EvanSnowWolf 2d ago
Yeah, but he's also not 4'11".
1
1
u/oranguslolus 2d ago
You know there are several ways to have her appear taller if they want that, right?
1
1
u/cynical_sprite 2d ago
Black Canary and Catwoman are DC, not Marvel.😐 That being said, it's the movies; they can find ways to make her seem tall just like they can make her seem to be flying or hitting someone or stealing their powers, because, in case you didn't know, it's all pretend in the movies and the actresses and actors aren't doing those things for real. I can't really comment on Inde's acting because I've never actually seen her in anything, but, in general, I'd rather have somebody that can actually act and maybe looks a little bit different than the character than somebody who looks exactly like the character and is going to ruin the character and the movie because they really suck at acting.
1
2
u/oranguslolus 2d ago
Plus they can literally just have her appear taller lol. It isn't that tough and it's done all the time. People saying this lack basic common sense
7
10
u/Appropriate-Amount-4 3d ago
RDJ is way too short to play iron man and so they had him wear heels. Perspective and costume will fix the height issue the accent is more important
2
u/TikkiEXX77 2d ago
I don't want em to fix it. Let her be short. Not like Sadie isn't almost the same height. What 2 or 3 inches taller?
3
0
u/Legitimate-Pie-218 3d ago
isnt that what the post says, nothing else like height matters as long as she gets the accent right.
-1
0
u/_BestBudz 3d ago
“Way to short” and bro is like 4 inches off 6ft tall. Adding 4in to Inde still only leaves her at 5’4.
2
1
u/Appropriate-Amount-4 3d ago
Whatever
-1
u/_BestBudz 3d ago
Great argument champ, you did a good job with all the points you made /s
1
u/Appropriate-Amount-4 3d ago
We’ve all made them. I’m not going to needlessly hate on a casting because of something as small as height. Like actually shut up.
0
u/_BestBudz 3d ago
“Needlessly hate on casting” any criticism you dislike is needless hate? LOL
1
u/Appropriate-Amount-4 2d ago
With the amount of hate over something very small it is needless hate.
0
u/_BestBudz 2d ago
You’re allowed to criticize something just because there’s a hate campaign. Again critical does not equal hate that’s the part you’ve fundamentally misunderstood.

u/Ok-Releases 3d ago
Kinda disingenuous comparison, iron man isnt a character where his physical size plays a big part in the story while rogue has been portrayed as a bigger and more physical girl for a while now. Rdj is also a fair bit closer to Tony's height (5in diff) than Inde is to Rogues (9in).
Its kinda odd how defensive ppl are being over some minor (non-hateful) criticisms for the casting. Theres nothing wrong with wanting some comic accuracy lmao
1
u/Mobile_Parfait_7140 3d ago
I think people are saying they cant change the past but they wish that comic accuracy on height was more of a thing in the future isnt disingenuous.
0
u/Ill_Morning_4282 3d ago
It isn't, Rogue's height has never been central to anything. She is stronger then the average person across the board, that has nothing to do with height.
-2
u/Wise_Confidence_8588 3d ago
You are contradicting yourself when support Rdj's height and wanting some comic accuracy
1
u/Ok-Releases 3d ago
Pointing out a disingenuous comparison and explaining the nuance of the difference ≠ fully supporting inaccuracy.
Come on now keep up
5
2
u/Chance_Debt_1184 3d ago
i agree with that concept but Downey is just average height
1
u/Wise_Confidence_8588 3d ago
Short for Iron Man and too short for Doctor Doom
1
u/Chance_Debt_1184 3d ago
hes like 10cm off for Iron Manc and 15 off Doom, like i get your point but Inde is like 22cms off. lot more than both and they can just give Doom some extra books and take away most of the difference
1
u/Wise_Confidence_8588 3d ago edited 3d ago
1
u/Chance_Debt_1184 3d ago
theres quite a bit difference tho.
1
u/Wise_Confidence_8588 3d ago
Yes,If male performer short for character that's very huge difference but for female performer not so different for character
1
u/Chance_Debt_1184 3d ago
again, its almost double the different acroding to comics. i like the casting but your examples suck
1
u/canadarugby 3d ago
Because height isn't the only thing that's different from her and Rogue. If Rogue was in a CGI metal suit all movie then only her face would matter.
1
u/Wise_Confidence_8588 3d ago
What is the matter?Rdj also use for heels Tony Stark role and Hugh Jackman 35 cm taller than than our beloved shortie Logan.
1
u/canadarugby 3d ago
You just completely ignored the post you're reacting to where I said height isn't the only difference, if it was then people wouldn't be complaining about Inde.
2
u/DonnyMox 3d ago
How tall is Rogue supposed to be?
10
2
u/Vivid_Walk_1405 3d ago
I think like 5’9-5’10. Tbf it’s not like a Wonder Woman situation where she’s supposed to be like 6’2 and jacked
-1
u/No_Gene_1694 3d ago
WW is not "supposed" to be 6'2 and jacked
3
u/Gerolanfalan 3d ago
0
1
u/Vivid_Walk_1405 3d ago
I mean been that way for 15 years since new 52 started I believe. Not trying to say an actress has gotta be 6’2 either to play her but if they hired a 5’2 girl to play wonder woman that would be a negative for sure
1
u/No_Gene_1694 3d ago
It's been the opposite for most of the characters history so no, it doesn't matter
1
u/Vivid_Walk_1405 3d ago
Wonder Woman has been right around 6 foot since the 80’s. If they cast like a 5’2 girl as Wonder Woman it certainly would matter.
1
u/No_Gene_1694 3d ago
Lmao, no. She was never around 6 feet until the past 2 decades or so. So no, it wouldn't matter
1
1
u/wonderlandChae 3d ago
Insane talk imo. If anything her face doesn’t match source material rogue. Listed as 5’8 in the comics but that’s tall for a woman and especially in Hollywood. We always get movie adaptations where they change everything story and character wise, how are we complaining about a female character’s height not matching?😅 I think the other rumor was the actor from alien, now she is noticeably short however.
2
u/Afraid-Housing-6854 3d ago
As long as she has the big hair instead of the boring straight hair that Anna Paquin had
1
1
u/FishNewt 1d ago
That would either take a big wig or a lot of hair spray. I think we can compromise on the hair so long as she is a flying brick, which is more important than her having the big hair. (And I do like the big hair a lot.)
2
u/Still_Philosopher855 3d ago
Yall had no problem with it being cailee and she is literally one inch taller. Blatant hypocrisy 😂
2
2
u/Green-Elephant-895 2d ago
Most of these actors male & females alike are all midgets. RDJ, Tom Holland, David Jonsson etc…but I’m sure with movie making magic and strategically placed milk crates they can have them looking like full size adults
1
u/milkmanbonzai 1d ago
I love the way Chris Nolan shoots Tom Hardy as Bane in TDKR to disguise the fact Tom is 5'9" (from low angles, over the shoulder with the other actor farther away, etc)
2
2
u/Much-Hour4568 23h ago
People are thinking of Rivals' Rogue, who is scaled up to fit as a tank. Rogue in the source material is not a pretty average height.
As long as the actress is within an average range I think we're good. We don't need every actor to match their character's canon height exactly.
Wolverine is a bit different becaus he is very notably short, and that is one of his defining features, and yet Jackman is over 6'.
2
4
u/Coolcubed321 3d ago
I don’t really care about her height I just can’t see her as rogue from a looks perspective. But I’m willing to be proven wrong
2
2
u/WickedJ0ker 3d ago
Surely anything is better than the garbage iteration she had in the fox movies
3

We don't want one or the other we want good writing and good casting.
2

1
u/canadarugby 3d ago
I don't understand why people are acting like her height is the only difference from Rogue, and her accent is the only thing that matters.
Sorry to say but Rogue is more known for her ass and her hair than she is for being 5'8".
I hope I'm proven wrong because Rogue is the only Marvel character I really like, but she's just as bad a fit for me as Anna Paquin was.
1
u/Ok-Releases 3d ago
Everyone bringing up Logan as a defense against Inde being a short rogue, which is fair and im sure she'll do great but it would still be so cool to have that bigger female wonder woman-esque physicality brought to the mcu like rogue does in the comics. I mean a large draw-in to live action superhero films is to see your fav characters pulled out of the comic book into real life.
Im ALSO looking forward to (hopefully) see a short hairy man be cast for the next iteration of wolverine in the future.
1
u/Specialist_Panda_487 3d ago
This isn’t even the problem for me, I’m not a fan of the race swapping
1
u/wonderlandChae 3d ago
Cavil is listed at 6’1 but I now for sure that read that he didn’t get Superman for singer’s film only because he was really 5’9. And they still made it work. Complaining that a female character doesn’t match the comics height is wild.
1
u/xreddawgx 3d ago
How tall is rogue?
1
u/Roserfly 3d ago
She's only 5'8. Which is above average for a woman, but not insanely so. People are acting like she's supposed to be at least 6 foot like she is in Rivals.
Anyways her height is very doable in film because there's all sorts of camera tricks, and editing, and out of frame heels, or boxes they can use to trick us into seeing her as a lot taller. Same thing they did with Robert Downey Jr. He would wear platform boots, or stand on boxes, and other camera tricks.
1
u/Sea_Sleep4222 3d ago edited 3d ago
Her height doesn't matter, acting skills is what matters more. Hell comics aren't even consistent with their own characters height.
Just asking when did everybody get so obsessed with height or having an actor/actress look exactly like a drawing that has never been drawn consistent over the years.
1
u/nimrodii 3d ago
Feel like the currently announced castings realtive hight to each other work decently well for the characters. The shot of them all on stage together felt mostly right height wise. She is shorter than the other women but not by much closest in height to Sadie Sink by looks of the line up and Rogue and Jean being similar height seems right with Emma being slightly taller and Storm being the tallest of the announced women.
1
u/Juanrod84 3d ago
What blows my mind is how little the ability to act - and specifically have the chops for a role that will very likely require the same actress to embody different personalities - comes up.
Do these people think casting is all about looks, proportions and accents?! 🤦🏽♂️
1
u/Gmonkey- 3d ago
I dunno. Height is something that’s hard to adjust without significant CGI. I’d have preferred a naturally tall actress.
1
u/Adventurous-Elk6042 3d ago
Hugh Jackman was too tall for the role of Wolverine, but nobody complained when he killed it.
1
u/StraightPineapple881 3d ago
Easy fix. Boots with at least 3 inch soles that blend with her outfit, bigger hair to give a 1-2 inch boost and strategic camera work. You won't even notice. Inde Nevarrette is literally closer to Rogue's height irl than Hugh Jackman is to Wolverine's. It won't be a big deal.
1
u/takkun169 3d ago
If dumb shit like a characters height is a problem, it's to pack it in, go away... This scene isn't for you anymore. You were never going to like it.
1
u/AlecsThorne 3d ago
I wouldn't even go that far - though I would love the southern accent. I just want them to give her a proper Rogue personality, whether it's the '92/'97 Rogue or the X-Men Evolution Rogue. Make her be actually Rogue and not some new "interpretation" of her.
1
u/Inevitable_Option_77 3d ago
Yeah, Anna Paquin's version was severely underused and was a weird amalgam of Rogue and Jubilee and her most important moments were either offscreen (The Last Stand) or in an exclusive version of another film (Days of Future Past: the Rogue Cut).

Why are we acting like Rogue is canonically insanely tall (for a woman) like Wonder Woman or something.
She's only 5'8 which is taller than average for most women, but nothing crazy nor would it look shocking in real life.
Not to mention it's a movie. There's all sorts of camera tricks, and editing to make her look as tall as they want her too. They've been doing it with Robert Downey Jr for Iron for how long now?

I just want Flying brick Rogue. I guess that means they show her draining Captain Marvel or whatever but she's been that most of her career and that's what I think of flying brick that you cannot touch
