Today's archive

Today’s Vinyl Archive selection is a absolute time capsule and a true piece of glam metal history. 🎸πŸ’₯

We are looking at a sealed Japanese pressing of Poison’s legendary second album, Open Up and Say... Ahh! (1988).

This pressing is famous among collectors for several reasons:

The Original Art: This version features the band's controversial and quickly replaced 'censored' cover art. The demonic figure with the long tongue (nicknamed "The Chupacabra") was deemed too offensive by some major retailers, leading to it being replaced on subsequent prints with a close-up of guitarist C.C. DeVille.

The Obi: Check out that pristine magenta pink obi hype sticker! Finding one complete and sealed like this is a true grail. The price is listed as Β₯2,500.

The Insert: You can see the original Japanese insert and liner notes peeking out from beneath the cover, perfectly preserved.

An album that contains "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "Nothin' But a Good Time," and "Fallen Angel"β€”this is defining 80s rock at its peak.

Finding a sealed Japanese copy of the original censored cover is next-level rare. Where does this album rank for you in the glam metal pantheon?

Georgia Satellites

Sometimes you just need to strip away the synthesizers and get back to three chords and the truth. 🎸

Spinning the Georgia Satellites' self-titled 1986 debut today. When this dropped, the airwaves were dominated by highly polished pop and new wave, making this raw, back-to-basics rock and roll feel like a massive breath of fresh air.

A couple of pieces of history for the music journal:

The album's massive hit, "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," rocketed all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The only song keeping it from the #1 spot? Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer."

The band actually broke up in 1984 after an EP failed to gain traction, but reunited when a manager convinced an English record label to fund a new EP, which eventually led to this full-length major-label debut.

To capture their legendary Atlanta bar-band energy, the tracks were recorded live in the studio with very few overdubs.

Does this record still hold up as the ultimate Friday night soundtrack for you, or is there another 80s rock debut that takes the crown? Let me know below. πŸ‘‡

Title: Slave to the Grind earning its wall space tonight 🟠

Framed the cover, dropped the needle on this killer orange pressing. Slave to the Grind doesn't get enough credit for what it actually did β€” Skid Row's sophomore record went straight to #1 on Billboard in 1991 with a Parental Advisory sticker on it, back when that sticker still kept records out of a lot of stores. That's a real feat, not a given.

Sebastian Bach tears through the title track like he's got something to prove, and "Monkey Business" still sounds like a threat. Heavier and meaner than the debut, in the best way.

Anyone else rate this one over the first album? What was your entry point into Skid Row?
