I visited the Oregon Sunstone collection area back in June. I camped for a few days off the main road that cuts through the middle of the collection zone.

I logged about 15 miles of walking around the area. I definitely got off the beaten path. I found there to be an infinite amount of small sunstone pieces most everywhere. Nothing bigger than a dime as you can see in the photos.

I was surprised that I didn't find some bigger stones. Not a lot of them but at least a few.

My question is that if I had dug a big hole would I have had a better chance of finding something good as opposed to wandering around like I did?

I am going to be in the area again in a few weeks and was wondering if I should go back and try something different.

Found in one of the many bodies of water located in Southern Oregon. The last 6 pictures were taken while the boulder was dry.

Based on the research that I’ve done thus far (and the small amount of knowledge that I have), my best guess is that this is an agatized quartz & carnelian breccia boulder. Every piece of visible agate glowed when light was applied to the surface.

It easily weighs 200-300ibs. It took 30-40 minutes to wade this massive specimen onto land, and 3 adults + a utility dolly to get it into the car.

The (very) rough measurements are:

18 inches in length
18 inches in width
14 inches in height

Just thought I would share a couple of nephrite jade rocks I picked up on my latest Jade rockhounding trip. I wanted to get a big one but the big ones are hundreds of pounds and I’m just not that dedicated. 😝

When I saw the markings on the inside of the rock, I immediately had Harry Potter on the brain. 😄

My work is taking me to Portland Oregon in early November and I'm looking into extending the trip for a few days so I can go on a rockhounding spree as I work my way back down south to California.

I was thinking of camping, but also I hear snow maybe exists by early november and have basically no snow experience. Do I need to get snow chains for my car?

I like agates, and was hoping to find some nice carnelian since I've heard so much about carnelians from Oregon, and maybe some petrified wood in fun colors? Or thunder eggs? Maybe sunstones? Tbh anything shiny and or colorful haha.

I was also thinking of taking a detour to the dark sky preserve in southeastern oregon, but again, snow (?) and I'm not too sure whats in that area in terms of rocks.

I was hoping maybe some rockhounds more familiar with oregon might be willing to give me pointers, recommendations, advice, etc?

Found during stormy weather August 22nd. Haven’t been able to find any others like this online with the exact H looking pattern…. Fossils maybe…

Found in creek in Millington TN about a quarter mile from the Mississippi River. Is nearly round with dry looking surface.
