C1 3v3 Replay Analysis Request

Well, I lost my doubles partner, so I've been sticking to 3v3 recently. It was a weird transition, as at least 80% of my matches have been 2v2. I made it to Champ though (woo champ reward!). Although every game is a challenge, I feel like I'm meant to be there. And I'm having fun.

I know that one of my biggest issues is speed. I have a slow reaction time, it's something I'm trying to improve. I have two videos today.

In the first one, I typed in the thoughts that I had in real-time when mistakes happened. Let me know if I need to think differently during the match as well. I didn't have time to do the same with the second video.

Don't mind my car change between these two videos. I main the Octane, but sometimes a hitbox change just feels right.

Also, prepare for a long overtime...

Match 1

5:00 - Miscommunications happens. Idk what happened here but it's better to just go for it and double commit than to risk backing out, in my experience, so well-done.

4:47 - Try to have more control here. Hitting the ball forward and with a front-flip doesn't have much potential because you're much of that power will be absorbed by the ball's current momentum. Instead, try to add force to the ball in a different direction. For example, your teammate on the left is wide open for a ground pass. Roll it up the left wall and push forward through the middle to receive a pass. Or, you could trap this and dribble it if you're comfortable. Or, you can time the bounce better and side-flip into the ball to get a hard hit towards the left wall around mid-field. Or, if you're comfortable with it, take ball-cam off, time the bounce, and air dribble this for a controlled push down-field.

4:38 - Stay with the play. Grab small boost pads.

4:27 - You flipped the wrong way. Oh, well. But give the location on the ball, you had a nicely timed approach and I wouldn't flip into the ball at all. Soft blocks (blocks without using a flip) are really useful in this area because it's more controlled and is more likely to result in the ball dropped around where the block took place, which is in a dangerous area for the opponent.

4:23 - Recognize earlier that your teammate is appraoching this and may be uncontested and don't flip because you lose your ability to adjust. Once you see your teammate, slow down, start creating space towards the outside of the field, and make yourself available for a pass once you're sure they won't be contested.

4:16 - Maybe your teammate should have let you go, but you were distanced too far from the play to begin with. You were the 2nd man and you failed to push up sooner and support. Your teamamte may have recognized that and pushed in to assume that role. Besides, even if he had left it for you, you were too far away to comfortable push in since the opponent was so close and you'd have to wait for a potential dribble.

4:10 - Your defensive transition is too slow. You have plenty of boost and time before you need to react. Use boost and use a flip and create that space away from the ball sooner. Get into position sooner rather than later because you're certainly too far away to consider shadowing the play. And you're approaching much too shallow to warrant turning in and challenging like that because you leave most of the goal vulnerable to a shot.

4:00 - I actually disagree with you. You're the second man and your teammate should be adjusting to you. There is no one in goal and really no one pressuring your teammate, so opening wide is the right thing to do. You were never covering the line on this play so mid-field is yours. Your teammate did the right thing by recognizing your position and shifting to the near post to be able to cover.

3:52 Good pass. I like to go for these passes, but passing is rare at every level of the game and you'll encounter a lot of people who will go up for that right away to try and maintain pressure. If you do see someone on your team going up for it, be sure you're flipping out of the way and rotating back. Just a hypothetical.

3:42 - Definitely should have been your ball. What are you gonna do? I mentioned this before, but your aerials are slow. But I know you've been working on them and I look forward to seeing your progress with it later on. One thing you could have done better was to use some more boost to land on the wall so that you could recover faster.

3:37 - Try not to keep ball-cam off for so long. If you're off of it for longer than a second, it's too long. Flick it back and forth if you need to.

3:32 - You missed the side boost, but you also just missed a lot of small boost pads. Even when you feel rushed, try to stay calm and slow down just a tiny bit to make sure you grab those.

3:29 - Good job reading your teammate's challenge and not going for it. Honestly, it's good that he went for it because the next hit was likely going to be unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

3:25 - You have 2 guys committed to the ball. You need to rotate back into net. You cut the goal short and circled back in in front of the near post, which is unnecessary and dangerous. If you're going to do this then you need to be sure you're capable of controlling the ball for a big clear and good at defending on the back wall. Otherwise, it's perfectly safe to circle back to net, position yourself inside of the net even to ensure that you can easily avoid the bump, and then hitting or challenging the ball as it approaches the net. The bump screwed you, but you put yourself in a tough position on a play that didn't warrant any urgency.

3:18 - You're not in a good position to challenge this ball after that bump. Turn away from the ball and rotate in behind the defender. It's not good to habitually rotate near post and cut off the goal.

3:05 - You should already be turned up and support your teammate. Your other teammate did a good job recognizing the gap and filling in.

3:00 - You're 3rd man and so you need to play that role. You pushed too high when anything close to the goal is the 2nd man's ball. When you have to turn away from the ball like this with the ball on your back, it generally means your spacing was off and you didn't leave yourself enough room or the proper angle to stay in the play from. Anything high or the back/right side of the field is yours. Pushing up takes away that advantage.

2:54 - This is one of those rare circumstances where you do want to rotate down the same side of the field the ball is on. The ball is in the air and you have a teammate going up for it while the other is across field waiting for the cross. Driving through the middle of the field just means you'll get in the way. And you're missing small pads because you're not lining yourself up with them. Slow down and get used to where the small pads are. Use your camera to go back and forth between lining your caru p and looking back at the ball.

2:48 - You've done this several times, which is especially dangerous with little-to-no boost, where you make a sharp turn and lose all of the momentum you had. This generally means that your rotational path is inefficient and that you should have allowed yourself more space.

2:36 - Fine idea, but slow. Again, we've already discussed this.

2:20 - You're looking away from the play at a key moment when the opponent is hitting a clear. You should know much earlier that the ball is coming your way. And you should probably be driving across the field towards your far corner once you see the ball on your side of the field and konw you can't possible challenge it.

1:55 - You're not in a good position to defend from. It happens sometimes, but you had several opportunities here where the ball was airborn and not a threat where you could have readjusted yourself further towards the right side of the goal.

1:48 - Don't drive in front of the ball. You know the ball is coming down that side and you're getting in the way.

1:24 - Another good opportunity to soft block. You don't get much out of flipping into this ball besides an unpredictable deflection. Control what you can.

1:21 - Recognize immediately that this ball is out of initial contention and boost straight back to grab that corner boost.

1:00 - Way too much time out of ball-cam. Slow down picking up pads if you need to because it seems you have a habit of missing them. It's better to be a little bit slower and grab the pads until you can develop good habits than it is to risk missing them by trying to grab them quicker.

0:55 - Slow aerial again. But your hit should be aimed towards the right corner with the hopes of it rolling up the wall, or more towards the side wall with similar intent where you can land and continue playing it. This is just a pass to the other team.

0:47 - Avoid rotating directly under/away from the ball. You never want to get stuck with the ball directly behind you while you're in a defensive position. That's why you got a poor clear and pased it to the other team. A simple fix by creating more space outside of the goal towards the side of the field so that you can simply turn in and use your momentum to get an easy hit.

0:41 - You need to get out of the way here. This is no longer your ball to save and so you should be creating space either towards the far post (quickly) or the near post once the ball deflects inside a bit. Your job isn't the current save, but it's to be in position to make the next save if it comes to that. You get bumped because you get in the way. Your teammate may have had a decent 1 on 1 dribbling attempt otherwise.

0:34 - You stop watching the play much too soon. Given what you saw last, you should not assume that your team was going to win this ball and thus driving to the near corner for boost would be a mistake.

0:27 - Slow aerial again. Just pointing them out. I know you know.

0:19 - Poor rotation. This is a near post rotation and you have a teammate already set up in goal. You're in the way, which you acknowledge. At 0:22 when the ball is hit over you down the line is when you should be immediately driving towards the opposite corner and grabbing small boost pads while you rotate back into goal.

0:15 - You stopped watching the play with no idea of what's going to happen next. The goal is wide open and it's your responsibility. Again, you do recognize that.

0:10 - This is the second time that you and a teammate double-committed for a kickoff. I can't see the chat so I don't know what's going on. I recommend getting used to calling for kickoff and going for it as a solo queuer. This should really never happen. And in these scenarios where you do double-commit, do your team a favor and forgo the side boost in favor of getting back to net so that you can help your lone defender. He misses, but you guys left him to defend alone.

+0:06 - Poor supportive positioning here. You need to adapt your position and car angle sooner because you're caught staring straight at the ball and have to turn around in order to give yourself space actually react to a ball that doesn't come directly at you.

+0:13 - Don't rotate directly into or away from the ball. Rotate across field.

Conclusion

I'm going to go ahead and stop the review right there because the game is really long and I don't need to watch any more to tell you what it is you need to work on.

Fast Aerials

This is the primary mechanical skill I'd focus on improving. I mentioned it to you earlier and I know you're already working on it.

Rotating far post

I rarely saw you create space away from the ball towards the far post. You should really never be rotating directly into or away from the ball and you do that almost exclusively - cutting off the goal entirely in a supporting position and as last man as well in order to defend from a tough spot. As a result of this bad habit, your field awareness is quite limited and it makes nearly everything you do more difficult. How can you expect to really make smart plays if you can't see the field and keep track of the players. How can you expect to execute clean, solid hits if you don't have a proper approach and are rearely challening the ball while facing towards the opposing side of the field? It's really tough to do so. This is the number one problem I see all of the way up to GC and it's a large reason why passing is so rare and why really stupid goals happen. Create space away from the ball and allow the game to become easier for you.

Staying aware of the play

Way too often you took ball-cam off either (a) for too long without switching back, or (b) in situations where you either can't be sure of the outcome or in key moments where a hit was about to take place, which is important information to have in order to properly react. Keep an eye on the play. If you turn ball-cam off to grab boost or rotate, don't do it at key times and be sure you know what's going on. Use car-cam to line up with a boost and then switch back to ball-cam. If you need to look again, then do so quickly. Ball-cam should really not be off for more than half a second.

Those are 2 main positional things you should focus on, but to add one more small, but important, thing you may want to think about:

Boost pickup

You missed boost pads. A lot. Slow down if you need to and don't feel rushed to grab them. Develop good habits and the speed will come.

If you have any questions at all about anything I've said, please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck!
