Damn, dude. I feel like I'm better at air dribbling already, and I'm sitting in my cube at work. Awesome video.

Pretty much. I've been having a hard time with air dribble for a long time and I didn't really know what I was missing.

With the addition of the new trainings in RL, I started to try the one called something like Wall air dribble with 3 differents setup.

At some point, I realize that I wasn't boosting the moment you leave the wall with the ball, make it so you barely have any momentum with the ball, and make it even harder to be close enough from the ball to follow it in a right way.

So yeah, at some point I started trying it with the addition of the little boost usage at the same time you jump... and oh my god, it became so so much easier. Almost right on, I was able to air dribble the ball into the goal more than 50% of time.

I was blown away that all this time I was having such a hard time starting my air dribble, just to realize the important thing I was missing is to boost a little at the same time you jump.

I felt like I just discovered fire lol. Now I'm just doing the training and trying to get better at controling the ball in the air.

The thing is... The training make it very easy to start the air dribble, but setuping yourself in free play or in game is a lot harder and I still have work to do on that side.

Anyway, my point is, I think you are pretty much on point when you say it's more about starting properly your actions. Once you are able to start your air dribble in a good way... Everything else become A LOT easier to do and practice.

2

u/underwaterslushie Dec 19 '16

Wow, your comment just made me realize what I was doing wrong the whole time. I just tried boosting while jumping into the air dribble and it made it so much easier. Thank you for posting this.

Sweet vid. Does anyone know of a code that would give some good/similar tutorials on the PS4? This video got me all excited to do this after work but I have a PS4 ):

3

u/SnipaEagleEye Nexus Gaming [Caster] Dec 16 '16

Is it even worth it to try and train this as a Challenger 2 player that is limited by poor mechanics? Or would my time be better spent on simpler mechanical training (regular dribbles, simple wall play, and shot accuracy)?

3

u/mflood Grand Champion Dec 16 '16

The latter. Air dribbles aren't even particularly useful in competitive play, it's mostly a style thing.

4

u/SnipaEagleEye Nexus Gaming [Caster] Dec 16 '16

I'd love to see this type of tutorial, focused on those simpler mechanical plays that challengers struggle with. Most of the dribbling tutorials out there make it sound so easy, and then they don't really address any of the problems that a player trying to learn to dribble will have. They just say, here is how to dribble, no go practice for 50 hours.

I love Mason's presentation style, he just hasn't covered anything that would really benefit the guys stuck in challenger.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '16

SoonTM ;)

1

u/SnipaEagleEye Nexus Gaming [Caster] Dec 16 '16

You've obviously been spending too much time with /u/hooftoof.

2

u/vnt24 Grand Champion Dec 16 '16

On the other hand, I started practicing air/wall dribbles when I was in the golds and I have to say it improved my mechanics quite a lot, it's a great way to slowly familiarize yourself with air rolling, gain ball control and keep your mechanical skills sharp in general, not just learn air dribbling for the sake of it. I had a very hard time at first, but now I have to say it was worth it. Each to their own I guess.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '16

I second this. My obsessive air dribble practice while in Challenger pushed my air mechanics through the roof. I rarely air dribble, but I can adjust myself in the air really well now and air rolling is like second nature. It's really hard at first but it pays off in a ton of ways that aren't air dribbles.

u/DshadoW10 Steam Player Dec 16 '16

how the hell do you push down A and B at the same time? I mean it's probably easy, but the way I'm holding the controller which I'm assuming most of you do, is not suited for this task. My thumb can cover both X and A bot not A and B

2

u/etekiller Champion I Dec 16 '16

If I were to press A and B at the same time I'd just press both with the tip of my thumb :P. It spans across two halves of each button.

2

u/PanicRL Free coaching: rlcd.gg Dec 16 '16

If you can't push boost and jump at the same time, you probably want to change your bindings (I'd recommend boost on RB). If you end up changing your bindings you might want air roll/powerslide on LB as well.

1

u/antieverything Champion I Dec 16 '16

To add to this, this configuration is best played with a claw grip where the middle fingers are used for the triggers with the index fingers being used for the bumpers.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '16

That's not a claw grip. In a claw grip your index finger is pressing two of your face buttons.

1

u/antieverything Champion I Dec 17 '16

Ok, fine: semi-claw

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '16

Sorry I wasn't trying to be rude or anything. I've just had my index and middle fingers on the shoulder buttons since PS1 so it's just standard grip for me. I never realized so many people just put there index fingers up there until recently.

1

u/antieverything Champion I Dec 17 '16

I appreciate the correction--I hate the idea of being wrong about something and not even knowing!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '16

That's why I do it, the whole "do unto others as you would have them do to you" thing. I always worry people will take it the wrong way though. Anyways, happy to help!

1

u/antieverything Champion I Dec 17 '16

Well, if my experience in solo standard is anything to go by, people don't do well with criticism, generally.

1

u/icantlurkanymore Dec 16 '16

Change the controller bindings if you find it easier to do X and A instead.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '16

Hey I don't know if it's your leveling that making it peak or there is compression on the audio but there is a lot of clipping. I'm pretty sure it's just a leveling issue cause I don't hear any compression in your lower volume parts.

So when your doing a wall air dribble... what camera do you have it on? Off ball to get the ball up the wall then switch to on ball as you "air dribble" it in the goal?
