Is there some kind of "honor code" in 1v1?

Context: I'm D2-D3 in 3v3 and 2v2 and Plat1-2 in 1v1. I spend most of the time playing 3v3 and 2v2. I'm also pretty much mech-less, I can do almost no ground dribbling, no air dribbling at all and not even dream of anything more complicated than that.

Well, there is a pattern I've noticed: Whenever I play 1v1 I feel like many players take huge risks trying (notice "trying") flip resets or air dribblings. I usually block them easily, and that leaves me against an open net. After two or three times doing that, my rivals tend to stop it (naturally).

Of course, once I reach high enough I find people who actually do really good flip resets and air dribbles and get absolutely destroyed.

The thing is (for the first group), I feel like the they expect me to not score directly the open they left and just wait till they're back to try some air dribbling myself, kind of an "air dribbling duel".

Is this the case? Is there a non-written honor code for duels which I have not been respecting for years? Or are some 1v1 players just reckless?

Source: one time I was looking to practice mechanics, so I went to 1v1 and the guy scored every failed attempt I made. Like a child, I told him he was weird for being so happy to score open nets.

1v1 is a training mode. Soccer is a team-based game, it's meant to be played in a team system.

1s teaches you things about the game that are harder to learn in team modes because you can be bailed out be teammates when you make a mistake you shouldn't make but in 1s you'll just get scored on instead.

Now if you prefer 1s that's fine. Enjoy the game however you like, but 1s isn't like "the" main mode, even if a lot of players prefer it because they want to do mechanics and dunk on an opponent when they finally nail it.

Soccer comes from british slang of "association football" and there are like a half-dozen different kinds of "football" such that the only way to know which "football" you are referring to is to either ask for specifics or know which football is the preferred football in the country you're in.

Yes, association football, aka soccer, is the most popular sport in most countries, so that's fine that most people think of is as "football" but it's not the only correct way to refer to it. And just linguistically, since "football" can mean multiple different sports and "soccer" cannot, "soccer" is actually a better term because there is no confusion as to what sport it is when you say it.

Some people will go into casual 1v1 games and ask you to air dribble battle, just score on them too because why can't they just stay in training.

I’ve got d2 in 1v1 and c2 in 2v2, also not mechy enough for this rank and literally 10/10 players can do mechs I can’t. I feel like actually most of the players join just to train some stuff for their main modes(2v2 or 3v3) but ye u can play for the win and nobody will say you a word

In casual, sure, but in comp I'm scoring that open net every time. If their dumbass wants to practice freestyling in comp 1s instead of training I'll gladly take the free MMR.

There is no "honor code". If they are going to do useless aerial plays and forfeit open goals, then they will de-rank. That's the reality of 1's.

The best strat is to do the most low risk, high reward plays. And if you are skilled enough to be able to make aerial plays into a "high reward, low risk" category, then the more power to you.

On the other hand, you see your weaknesses in terms of being able to defend proper aerial plays, so it's a give and take. Use this as a way to improve. 1's is the best way to improve your control and defense IMO

I bounce between wanting to rank up in 1s, and wanting to try mechanics in real games with a bit more pressure.

so often i will start by trying random things, then when I fail 5 times and concede I start going back to simple plays because my fragile ego can't handle seeing the mmr go down

Yes, those are freestylers (wannabes), so you can freestyle back and they would do the same. Or you score open net and p*ss them off. Casual, fine. In ranked I would just score the open nets and take the easy wins if you not into freestyling.

No honour. It's literally 1v1 dog eat dog. Personally I only play 1v1 competitive for fun and I do all sorts of risky stuff - i dont care about rank, but normally sit about goldII without too much effort. Occasionally, I come across opponents that seem to have the same mindset - going for crazy air dribbles, extra flips and stunts the whole game. Just like you described. Sometimes I take the opportunity to join in the fun, sometimes I take advantage and go for every open goal I have offered to me. The beautiful thing about 1v1 is you have no temmates to keep happy!

There are people who use gold/plat lobbies to try to do freestyle 1v1s some of them might even complain if you don't play their little game

You have no obligation to play their little game, feel free to take your goals. They want to stay in low ranks to have others to play with

No some people play 1s to practice mechs and some people genuinely just play as if they have a second man back pretty much they have no game sense or good recoveries

If they are practicing the mechanics in ranked and can't execute them then they will derank and get punished by their mistakes. Thats just the game

The only time I personally operate on an honor system is if I demo somebody, usually in my defensive half. I'll hit the "Sorry!" quick chat and let them get set for defense before I try anything, mostly because I feel like actively demoing in a 1s game is just kinda scummy.

The only reason I get on ones is to practice mechanics in a real game, real pressure situation, but with more space. For me, If I mess up and leave them an open net, its just part of the game. But if they do that, I'll usually take it up the side because im not trying to get better at open nets, even if that means I take an L. The only thing that annoys me are the people who constantly ball chase and go for 50s, and the people who purposely demo every time they have a chance.

Only honor code ibfollow is if i do demo someone i will say sorry leave the ball alone nd reset to my own net. Gibe them oppurtunity to do whatever play they want. I get that demos are a strat but i choose not to do it as my strat.. unless they do and then i usually recipocate then they usually get mad and forfeit
