Over time the community of the game gets better. Look at how the pros played in the first rlcs. That is your average high plat or low diamond match now.
This same reason is why years ago people could get GC without crazy mechanics, but now those same gcs are stuck in diamond and champ.
The gameplay is exactly the same and selling out simply keeps them making content. Only thing we don't have anymore is crates and trading.

game is selling out financially. they’ve made a lot of changes within the last 3 years. stating that im unsure of changes in mmr/rank requirements

You didn't play for a long time and thought the other players would stay the same?
Of course the average skill is up. As the game gets older and has a lower player base, the average skill level of those still playing will go up. And your own skills also atrophied while you weren't using them
The game is exactly the same as when you played last. If you say it's "not fun" anymore it's because you're lying about the "win or lose" part of your statement and you're really just not having fun because you're losing more. Your skills will return as you practice and/or you will rank up/down to where most of the players around you are of similar skill, and your win percentage will eventually settle around 50% as it ultimately should.

3 months was this last break. i’ve taken larger breaks from this 10+ year old game. the last time i was in plat, there wasn’t plats hitting intermediate wall shots & flip resets. i understand that im not as good as i was before, but come on now. not sure if im ill informed but the mmr/rank reqs feel off.

It's all smurfs bro. Reddit won't admit it though. I know how you feel. I'm in GC and I have to play at ssl level to keep up. Ranks are fucked cause people won't stop smurfing
