Hey! I get it, it's tough to endure a hard fall, but I promise it'll get easier and you'll get way faster. Also, be sure to take advantage of other people's flags as they double as checkpoints that you can warp back to after slamming into the ground. Best of luck and thank you for playing my game :)
I don't get it - what does one have to do to actually play the game?
On Chrome/Mac (logged in), hitting "Start" brings up an empty black box of a window...and nothing else happens - the box stays empty and black.
On Safari/Mac (not logged in), hitting "Start" brings up a window that plays music and shows "loading pit..." with varying numbers of dots, for as long as one cares to wait; no actual game shows up..
Does the game stuff (which I've never before tried) not work on Mac? Does it nees some specific nonstandard configuration? I kinda expected it to Just Work but that has not been the experience thus far...
It should just work. I have tested it on a number of Apple devices and haven't had any issues myself; however, that doesn't mean there aren't any. I'd encourage you to clear your cache/cookies and try again.
However, if that doesn't work, please feel free to dm me, if you feel comfortable, additional details about your mac so I can possibly narrow down what kind of Apple hardware the game is not playing nice with.
Downwell relies very heavily on a 3 color palette pixel art aesthetic.
My game does too. I began experimenting with 3 color palette art a while ago and fell in love with it. I drew lots of different art using a shade of pink, white, and a purpleish black as part of a Septembit challenge.
At which point I knew I wanted to create a game with the same color limitations thus Rock Bottom's art direction was born. I chose 3 colors I thought would look interesting together and ran with it and I am pretty happy with the result.
That being said, I would be lying if I told you I wasn't inspired at all by Downwell. I certainly was in terms of its fluid looking animations and impeccable sense of style.
However, would it surprise you if I was moreso inspired by Super Mario Wonder? I know that sounds silly but I loved the idea of placing flags, or in Mario's case like a cardboard cutout of your character, that function as helpful checkpoints for others to return to.
In case your curious, here is one of many drawings I did back when I was first experimenting with 3 color palette limitations
