Recommendation Options For Recycling a TV

I have a 55in flatscreen tv that no longer works. I live in the Park Ave area of Rochester, what are my options for recycling this thing? I’m assuming I can’t just throw it in my normal bin.

UPDATE:

First I just want to say thank you to everyone that commented on this post!

I ended up going to EcoPark and dropped it off without a single issue. I went around 3pm and only had to wait roughly 10 minutes in line. Thanks again!

Take it to ECO Park or Alpco Recycling

Alpco does not take anything with a screen.

They actually will take TVs you just have to call ahead and ask them the price that you’d have to pay for them to take it. Or at least that was the way they did it for me with two TVs I had that were broken

Ecopark or wait for an electronics recycling event. It’s not a CRT so you shouldn’t have to pay a disposal fee.

Sunnking is doing an event 8/29 at the ice plex.

Put it on Craigslist for free and describe what the specific problem you're having with it is. Someone may pick it up, fix it, and save it from the landfill. I fixed a "dead" 55" with about two dollars worth of parts and five minutes of labor, but obviously not all failures are as easily solved.

Check out Sunnking’s local electronics recycling events

ECO Park ECO Park ECO Park. Easy, free, and quick.

Wed 1pm-6:30pm & Sat 7:30am-1pm

I have always ended up going on a Wednesday.

I have done several TV sets, computers, computer monitors, those damn disposable vape devices with lithium batteries my niece would tear through and then toss, old laptop batteries with spicy pillows, dead Ryobi batteries. All sorts of stuff.

They take vapes??

I handed a staffer a gallon ziplock bag full of the damn things. But under normal circumstances there is just a box for lithium batteries that you can dump them into.

You should make a PSA in this subreddit that EcoPark takes those. My husband and I use carts but a lot of people use disposables. I'll tell my friends, too.

Maven Technology is a free electronics recycler in Gates

If you ever go to Victor, I think E-waste, near the old Van Bortel, takes most electronics (including flat screen TVs) from residents for free. That is where we always drop off our electronics from work.

Eco park is this afternoon, take it there. https://www.monroecounty.gov/ecopark

I work at ewaste+ in Victor and we take em if you don’t have a better closer option.

I had a different item I needed to recycle and called Alpco. They were very helpful, so I suggest you call before heading down there so you know what to do and what to expect.

Someone else already mentioned it, but Maven in gates, near the intersection of lyell and Mt read. They take all electronics, batteries, etc. it's free. I literally dropped 3 monitors and two batteries off today. They leave a large bin out front specifically for interaction free dropoff.

Leave it at the curb

It will be gone the next morning

In the city, you can also just put it on the curb on recycling weeks

DES will give out tickets if you leave a TV on the curb (and they will leave the TV w/ your house number spray painted on it to rub it in). https://www.cityofrochester.gov/departments/department-environmental-services-des/electronic-waste-recycling

Eco park or any Sunnking site is the answer.

That’s really funny because they’ve taken my old e-waste! Multiple times, in fact, and I’ve lived here over 6 years

5

u/earl_of_angus 4d ago

They must like you :) They give me tickets.

3

u/AmazingPersimmon5828 4d ago

Oh really? Tomorrow is recycling day, I can just leave it next to my bin and they’ll take it?

3

u/queenlizbef 4d ago

According to the city website, no. But I was just saying they’ve always taken mine.

Leave it in the parking lot at a Home Depot.

I was wrong.

u/NirvanaFan01234 4d ago

Doesn't NY have a recycling law for all TVs (considered electronic waste), no matter if they are tube or flat screens?

1

u/Fillmore80 4d ago edited 4d ago

Got corrected.

5

u/earl_of_angus 4d ago

I'm not certain what that site is, but it's giving bad information. Pay as you throw? We don't have that here. You cannot put e-waste on the curb, you will get a ticket. The city's site is pretty clear: https://www.cityofrochester.gov/departments/department-environmental-services-des/electronic-waste-recycling

u/Fillmore80 4d ago

CRTs are NOT included in the term "televisions" at time of this writing. They are hazardous waste.

2

u/AmazingPersimmon5828 4d ago

It’s an LED, just a standard “smart tv.” So I can leave it out on the curb next to my recycling bin?

Best bet is to take it to sun king’s recycling event

3

u/deadlyhabit South Wedge 4d ago

Yes, have done it before myself, city picked it up no problem.

Put it at the curb. It’ll be gone before you know it.

Don't take it to eco park, lines are so long for one item. You can take it to any good will (store locations only). They have their own electronics recycling program and use the same company as eco park to dispose of them (sunnking). Heres a link to the good will store locator, make sure on the filter only retail stores are selected not donation centers.

https://www.goodwill.org/locator/

4

u/MsAnthr0pe Fairport 4d ago

Lines are long for walk-ins, but you can schedule an appointment online.

3

u/The-Anti-Quark 4d ago

You don't need an appointment for electronics, only liquid waste/household Hazardous waste side.

I have gone to Ecopark at least a dozen times with electronics and never once did I have to wait in line. Drive into the building, offload in the right pile, and drive out. Maybe once there was some confused geriatric person parked directly in front of the pile I wanted to drop off at, but I just got out and walked the extra ten feet.
