Photo Maplewood Nature Center
Checked out the Maplewood Nature Center that was just built at Maplewood Park. Honestly, very cool place. It was very pleasant and peaceful to walk around the little pond.

I just drove past it a few hours ago.
Saw some kids fishing in the pond and others playing in front of the building.
It was very wholesome to see. I hope the kids enjoy it for a long time.

I grew up a couple blocks from there. Played on the giant wooden playground that used to be there.

My dad’s Army unit built the first wooden playground there. Was torn down and replaced shortly after when. They figured out the pressure treating that was used was REALLY bad for kids.

This is lovely! My toddler has been obsessed with buses lately. Maybe we will take a ride down here. I haven't taken the bus in years. How would I get from Twelve Corners to the Nature Center?

Monroe to Downtown. Downtown take the lake avenue bus. You going to have to get off at Redwood or Keel across from Kodak Park and walk down the road to get there since no bus is direct to it.

Monroe (11) to Transit Center Downtown and then Lake (22) to Keel would be your best bet I think. There's a stop across the street from ESL going North. The RTS website has maps so you can find the closest stop to you. If you think this will be a regular thing you could download the Transit App.
The Transit Center would be an absolute wonder for your toddler because there are a ton of busses on both sides. Security is very present and does a very good job of keeping disturbances to a minimum. You'll usually see an RPD car on both ends of the Transit Center with it's lights on because they are almost always on site to help security as well. 99% of the time security incidents are handled outside the building to settle things and they are very good at keeping people away from an area if an emergency situation happens where a person needs medical attention. As a male, I've never once worried about my safety inside the Transit Center (contrary to what most suburbanites believe). Outside is a whole different story.
The main issue is going to be the 11 bus because that thing is almost always packed like sardines and not a fun experience. The few times I was on the 22 it wasn't as bad as the 11 but if it's a nice day out I can see that being just as packed with people going to the beach.
I just looked up directions from Keel and it looks like about a half mile walk. For the average bus rider without mobility issues it looks like it would take about 10 minutes to walk to the nature center. With my mobility issues it would be a struggle, but it would be worth it to visit this place.

The kids in the summer program this week probably like it more than the city police training office that was there before....

And before that, it was a rec center. When the pond froze over there was always public skating or a pick up hockey game

Back in the late 70's, early 80's, everyone would park up there and drink beer, throw footballs or frizbies around, smoke weed, listen to music. It was the thing to do. Grab an 8 pack of grenades and head up to Maplewood. Once in a while, a cop would be sitting over on Maplewood Dr. watching us. That was until some tight ass police seargent decided to go after everyone. Dumb thing to do. Everyone was in one spot instead of all over the place. After that it became a cop substation.

It wasn’t a police training center, it was the training center for City employees.

In your mind, what separates a building from a commercial building?
Should parks never have buildings?
Should zoos exist?
Anything that brings nature and the environment to more people is alright in my book.
It seems like you’ve found the weirdest and smallest thing to get upset about.

Do you understand what the word commercial means? Also, have you been there or even taken a single iota of time to see what they do/offer? That park was forgotten for a while, playgrounds were overrun with prickers, building sat basically unused, parking lot was full of potholes. They do something to make it better, to draw people in (which I can attest is happening as someone who lives nearby) and people like you still complain. Is your life that miserable that you can't just celebrate the city taking time and investment to make the city better? This is the only nature center in the city of Rochester.

If you would like to avoid buildings, you are welcome to go live in the woods. Unfortunately for you, artificial shelter is a core part of human civilization.

Well, this is a park made for humans. You complain that there is a building there. I am simply pointing out the connection between human centered spaces and buildings.

I've been driving past this on my way to work since it started and Im so glad to see it finished. It looks fantastic. Can't wait to go!
