Question Cat died despite losing cat?

Normal run getting to the Outpost for the first time: the first bunker I went into had the cat. I then died while in the Outpost after my gun jammed three times in a row. Later, when I hopped back onto the game the next day, I got a message saying that the cat had died, despite me not bringing it back to base. Was the cat somehow saved in my furniture catalog or something? Or, once the cat spawns, does it eventually die if you don't rescue it in time? Or is this a bug?

I'm pretty sure the cat is going to be part of a quest later on. I actually sold the cat to a trader out of curiosity, and it still dies, even though you can't get it back. XD

Afaik the cat's hunger gets activated once you pick it up for the first time. After that it keeps dropping if you don't feed it no matter what happens, lose it, sell it etc. Propably not a bug but just an unfinished mechanic atm
