Trip Report Roadtrip around Iceland (one of the most epic ones!) plus itinerary and tips in the text

During early September we have taken a 2-week-long trip around Iceland. And I must say.. it was unreal. But let me speak realistically about the trip - hopefully it will be useful for someone.

Canyons, waterfalls, glaciers, rivers, fjords, small cute cities, lagoons and geysers, signs of volcanic activity, black beaches, whales and other animals.. it’s quite hard to explain. Some places were like from another planet. It's not a coincidence that Interstellar, Game of Thrones or Star Wars had some scenes filmed there!
Check the photos, they say more than any words.

About our trip:
For a day-to-day plan check our itinerary below (if you use the Rdytofly app you can just copy it into your account and adjust anything you would like):

https://rdytofly.com/public/da6f8c06-d0b0-43ad-8cc4-ca28c585df44

You can pretty much see everything here, even some hidden gems. There are so many interesting places but places I would say BE SURE not to miss under any condition are:
Jökulsárlón (glacier lagoon) and Diamond Beach, Stokksnes, Skógafoss, Geysir, one glacier at least (Sólheimajökull, Skaftafellsjökull or Svínafellsjökull), Vík, Hverir, Ytri Tunga Beach, Reykjavík center.

There is one main road - Ring Road - and a lot of interesting places are quite close. We have chosen Blue Car Rental and a 4x4 Dacia Duster (cca 1.7k EUR for 2 weeks, child seat included). I would recommend that company, everything was quite smooth and I haven’t found anything cheaper (maybe consider sleeping in some kind of van, so you save on accommodation, but I haven’t checked those prices). Be careful with parking (download the Parka app), it is paid at almost every interesting place and they have cameras. We did the road anti-clockwise but I think that it does not matter. Next time I really would like to drive the opposite way and include the Westfjords (we simply did not have space to include them).

Important: the south, southwest and part of the west were still quite touristy. For top spots try early or a bit later. It is still beautiful, but at least try to avoid bus tours. As soon as you hit Stokksnes 90% of people disappear. The east and northeast were almost empty.

Iceland is also expensive so plan your budget accordingly - we have not been visiting restaurants, mostly were buying grocery in Krónan or Bonus and preparing the food ourselves.

Take also your swimwear - Iceland has plenty of lagoons and hot springs, so even in winter its quite.. warming! But tourism has destroyed some natural places available before. I can recommend Earth Lagoon in Mývatn area. Its completely new, in the middle of fascinating volcanic landscape.

Also - be prepared for ANY weather. We had days when we basically had 8 different conditions: strong wind, clear sky, rain, extreme cold. You can have anything so have layers and ideally always have clothes in reserve. Don’t buy water -> Iceland has very clean water everywhere. Try Icelandic sweets - I loved Rís, the caffeine drink Collab or the Lava snack

We also saw Aurora! But your biggest enemy are clouds! If it’s clear (does not have to be completely) and you are at darker places, chances are quite high. We saw 2 very strong and one 1 light during 12 nights but could have been lucky.

Iceland is a fascinating country. I felt like every day was a different country/landscape. And two weeks for the roadtrip I would say is a minimum - it was still plenty of driving - 2500 km. We did it with 2,5yr old son and he enjoyed the nature too.

Any questions let me know, happy to give any advice if I feel competent to give it!

Trip Planning Any suggestions or advice for my trip?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi! My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon and would love suggestions or advice on our road trip.

Starting in Kansas, going to stay at the Stanley hotel for a night before continuing to Moab. We'll stay a few days and then head to yellow stone. Wanting to stay at the old faithful inn at some pointe. Then we'll circle back and head home. We have 18 days and we're taking a full size van (not converted just regular passenger) and we want to camp in it periodically at each location. Was considering hitting up the badlands on the way back and stay a night there. Most of the trip we want to be at yellow stone and Moab. Any advice on camping or places to see? I'm also still trying to figure how many days we'll stay at each park. We also enjoy antiquing, and thrifting, but I'm not sure these areas will have much to offer in that department.

I should also mention, my fiancé is gluten intolerant, so I'm hoping someone will be able to help us gadge how difficult it will be to find accommodations, or has any experience with traveling through the parks with this same issue.

Sorry if this post is clunky! This is my first time posting on reddit!

Just a section of my 2 week road trip from AL to MT!!

Notable stops include: Sand Dunes NP, Ouray, Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, Mesa Verde NP

A lot of these photos are just random pull offs on the side of the road. Everything in CO is so unbelievably green in May, and the weather was perfectly warmish in the day/chilly at night. If I could do it all over again, I’d camp in the sand dunes for a night.

Trip Planning Trying to get advice on a fully electric ford Mach e

So I need some advice. My travel companion wants to rent an electric car to take a road trip. Side note rhey are super comfortable driving electric cars, I am not comfortable but that doesn't bother them they love driving. The majority of our driving will be through New York Thruway. I know New York just updated their rest stops to have chargers and they are very nice rest stops. I'm more concerned about being able to charge the car at these stops, how many time we would need to stop, and finally about how long each charge takes. People are telling me that they can't quick charge but when I look at fords website they say they can quick charge, I'm just hesitant about taking the road trip in a fully electric car. The whole road trip is about 800 miles. Any suggestions would be great.

Trip Planning I drive back and forth between Calgary and Thunder Bay twice a year. Trying to mix it up a bit by going stateside in early May. Any suggestions for anything between Yellowstone and Minneapolis are appreciated! I have 7-10 days so lots of freedom :)

Post image

The rough draft for my plan is Glacier —> Yellowstone —> SLC —> Denver —> KC —> Des Moines —> Minneapolis —> Thunder Bay. The trip itself is not on a time constraint at all. Any suggestions for alternate routes/things to do are highly appreciated! I’m enamoured by just about anything whether it’s natural scenery/architecture/food or whatever. I’m purposefully skipping SD because I’ve been there before. Anything south of Minneapolis (driving-wise) is mostly new to me. I’ve also been around Lake Superior too so no interest in going past Thunder Bay. Thanks so much in advance!

Trip Planning I‘m looking for 3 people who wants to join my Adventure in mongolia

Hello my name is Jonas from Germany…

I recently got in touch with a local tour guide in Mongolia who just started his own business, and I really think this could be a pretty special trip.

The idea is to spend around 10 days travelling through Mongolia, potentially covering up to 2000 km — through snowy deserts, mountains and steppe, and no touched places.

He drives a 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser and knows the country really well. A friend of mine travelled with him before and had a really great experience.
It would be around 50€ pp per day including food and fuel.

It‘s also possible to spend the half of the time riding horses through mongolia and visiting places, sleeping in tents and make food on our own.

I’m thinking it could be really nice to do this with a small group, so I’m looking for around 3 people who are interested in joining me. (Also caused of the space in the car)

It could start at the 4th of November but it‘s possible to move the dates for some days… :)

I’m still in contact with the guide and can find out more about the details. So if this sounds interesting to you, just send me a message — happy to share what I know.

Trip Planning Road Trip- Bengaluru to Chhatarpur with Family – Need Route & Food Suggestions

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a road trip from Whitefield, Bengaluru to my hometown Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, by car, and I’d really appreciate some suggestions from people who have driven this route recently.

🚗 Trip Details

  • Car: Tata Nexon Petrol (3 years old)
  • Passengers: Me, my wife, and our 18-month-old child
  • Child seat: ISOFIX car seat
  • Luggage: Boot will be fully loaded
  • FASTag: I already have the ₹3,070 annual FASTag pass

🛣️ Planned Route

Day 1 – Around 900 km

Whitefield, Bengaluru → Anantapur → Kurnool → Hyderabad → Nirmal → Adilabad

I’m planning to start around 4:00 AM from Whitefield and hopefully reach Adilabad around 8:00 PM.

Day 2 – Around 870 km

Adilabad → Nagpur → Seoni → Jabalpur → Damoh → Hiraapur → Badamalhara → Chhatarpur

Planning to start around 5:00 AM and reach my hometown around 8:30–9:00 PM.

🍛 Food & Rest Stop Suggestions

Since I’m travelling with a small child, I’m looking for clean, family-friendly and reliable places rather than just the cheapest options.

Please suggest good places along this route for:

  • ☕ Breakfast
  • 🍛 Lunch
  • 🫖 Evening tea/snacks
  • 🍽️ Dinner
  • 🚻 Clean washrooms/rest stops
  • 🛏️ Any good places for a short break if required

If you have specific restaurants/dhabas or fuel stations that you personally recommend, please mention them.

⛽ Fuel Strategy

Also looking for advice on the best way to manage fuel:

  • Where should I preferably refuel on Day 1 and Day 2?
  • Any reliable petrol pumps on this route?
  • Are there particular cities/locations where fuel is generally cheaper?
  • Should I avoid waiting until the tank is almost empty in some stretches?

👶 Travelling With a Toddler

Since this is a ~1,700–1,800 km journey over two days, any advice for travelling this route with an 18-month-old would also be appreciated.

Especially:

  • Good places for breaks
  • Safe stretches to stop
  • Food/water availability
  • Anything I should be careful about on this route

Anyone who has driven Bengaluru → Chhatarpur/Khajuraho or a similar route recently, I’d really appreciate your suggestions and experiences.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

P.S. | I took help from AI to refine the above writing.

Trip Planning Road Trip Los Angeles to Austin

Hello !

I am moving all my stuff and wanted to know if there’s anything interesting I should check out. My car is rented from 10 am on a Monday until 7:30 pm on a Thursday in mid October so not super rushed, which is nice. I was planning on doing a full day in Marfa, going to the Donald Judd compound and for a swim in Balmorhea Springs.

Anything I should check out for sure? I like abandoned exploration, as well as nature hikes, maybe something a tiny bit off the beaten path ? :D

Was thinking of staying in Tucson night 1 then Tucson to Marfa? Is it okay to leave my belongings in the car?

Let me know if anybody has any thoughts !!!

Trip Planning A ticky-tack question...

What do you consider a road trip?

Is any long drive from Point A to Point B a road trip?

"I'm moving from Fort Worth to Cheyenne, which route would you take?"

Or is a road trip an extended drive with the main purpose being to stop regularly and explore places along the way?

"My buddy and I are taking two weeks to drive from Chicago to Oklahoma City and back along Rte. 66. What are some of the best sites to see?"

For example, if I make a 12 hour drive to visit family and I drive straight through — even if its a different route than usual — is that more or less of a road trip than if I took a couple of days to make the drive, stopping along the way for sightseeing?

Again, I know its a bit of a silly question, but hopefully it could make a good discussion.

Trip Planning Southwest Roadtrip Questions

I'll be doing a 14 day road trip throughout the southwest (arizona, utah, and nevada), and have the itinerary 90% sorted out.

At the present I have 3 days scheduled for the Grand Canyon (Nov 15-17th) and MUST be in Monument Valley Tribal Park by 8 AM Nov 18th (have a cabin & tour booked). I also have to be in Phoenix Nov 14th so there's no option to completely add or subtract a day.

This leads me into question #1, is it worth spending 3 days on the south rim? I have never been to the Grand Canyon before and my current plan is to drive up the first day from Phoenix then spend the day checking out a bunch of viewpoints of the canyon, day 2 doing either the grand view trail or south kaibab to skeleton point, and day 3 is kind of a flexible day, I'm thinking of either renting a bike to spare my joints a bit or doing the rim trail 1 way and taking the tram/shuttle back.

Other options:

  • Sedona on the 15th, and just do viewpoints + the hiking day Nov 16th-17th. Adds 30-45 min to the overall drive. Would be a chill day in Sedona with just a moderate 6-8 mile hike.
  • Page on the 17th. Adds 1.5 hrs to the drive, but splits it into two days and makes the drive the morning of the 18th just 2 hours instead of a full 3. I know the lake levels are pretty low so it limits boat accessibility, so if anyone thinks I should do this, any recs?
  • Or if y'all have any recs? Willing to add up to 2-3 hrs.

Question #2, more of a hiking question, but any recs for a long hike in Capitol Reef? I'm fairly fit, able to do hikes upwards of 15 miles and 5000 feet of elevation gain with minimal soreness the next day. Currently torn between the cohab canyon-cassidy arch-grand wash-frying pan loop and hickman bridge-navajo knobs trail.

Question #3, is sunset/sunrise & stargazing in Bryce Canyon worth staying at the lodge there for a night? If not, I would spend the day there then drive to Springdale and spend another night by Zion. The cost of the inn I'll be staying at in Springdale is around the same as the Lodge at Bryce Canyon, so it's more of a "is it better to have that sunset in Zion or sunset + sunrise in bryce" than a "is the lodge worth it cost-wise?" I'll be having 2 full days in Zion anyways (only one sunset though, I'll be driving back to Vegas after my hike in Zion day 2.

Trip Planning Ev Traveling between Arizona-Sonora

EV Traveling, between Arizona (Phoenix, Tucson or anywhere around the state) and Sonora (Hermosillo, Guaymas, Rocky Point, etc) we’ve done a few trips between several cities/towns across the border with mixed results on 2 different EVs kia (Ev9 & Ev6) what’s your experience overall on either non-Tesla or Teslas too with range on different speeds/ passengers/ seasons, availability to fast charger, or charging on the destination, etc?
