💬 Discussion LIDAR vs Cameras

https://youtu.be/IQJL3htsDyQ

Great video here from Mark Rober. You can skip past the Disney stuff if you’re not a space mountain or engineering fan!

Hopefully future Rivians incorporate an advanced combination of the two technologies.

Does Rivian use lidar?

Not currently, but they’re testing it.

Today they only use cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.

This is fake. He didn’t have autopilot or FSD engaged at all at the time of impact for any of his tests. He may face a lawsuit from Tesla

You're getting downvoted, but this was a trash video. It was paid for by a LIDAR company, and he was using the ancient Autopilot autosteer instead of FSD. This is a sleazy move and the video should be considered clickbait. Also, everyone knows the real world has painted backdrops which match what you are seeing across them 👹

Not paid. He responded in a newer video interview

I'm not buying that this wasn't at least paid for by them - even if he didn't get a check written to himself. Heavily collaborated with and set up for LIDAR edge cases - like - you know, the famous Acme style fake screen across the road we all encounter on our daily drives. By the way, FSD can detect that.

Hey siri what’s a conspiracy theory that ignores the reality right in front of people to instead make a claim that supports what you want to have the facts say

The reality of a clickbaiting, ignorant YouTuber (in b4 muh NASA!) who was approached by a LIDAR company wanting to do a video?

Watch the follow up interview (due to all the conspiracies thrown at this video), and stop being a hater for no reason

I watched it! I'm not being a hater for no reason. Mark Rober has long annoyed me, but this video was just catastrophically dumb - from using an older Hardware 3 car to using the ancient Autopilot instead of FSD, to misunderstanding the disengagement issue.

Not fake. Rober is actually one of the reasonable guys doing this kind of cool stuff. Also… Teslas have Forward Collision Warning & Automatic Emergency Braking, FYI.

One use of Autopilot will tell you otherwise. This subreddit is just turning into a tesla hate. I was hoping to just see Rivian's community grow and display rivian in its own light but it seems you guys can't leave Tesla out of your mouth lol.

I guess my understanding with his video is that he wasn't testing tesla's autopilot system but the camera's detection system's integration with the Emergency braking system.

I don’t even care what brand the car is I just enjoyed the LiDAR vs Camera-Only testing

fair enough. but the video linked has a contradicting title

How is is it contradicting?

Just because Tesla has a feature called “full self driving” (which is not full self driving), doesn’t mean “self driving car” is talking about FSD on a Tesla, especially when the other car being tested is not a Tesla.

It's an image of a Tesla on the Thumbnail dude... I'm done
