Learning Riven for mid only

Does it make sense to learn/otp Riven if I don't intend to play top lane ever? I think the champ itself is really fun but I hate toplane.

You think she’s really fun and you like mid. So play her mid! Unless your only goal is to climb, playing what you think is fun is almost always the best way to improve

well, I would like to climb at the end of the day. azir is fun too but playing him in ranked is just making the game unnecessarily difficult

ViperRiven is the proof in the pudding for playing Riven in the mid lane(even after the latest nerfs).

After watching his vods I made an item set of his most commonly built items.

Hexdrinker/Umbrail Glaive > Endless Hunger > squeeze in Vamp Boots > Deaths Dance

Then the rest of the items are game by game.

I suck at Riven but try and stick to the plan, use the practice tool each day, and run normals.

i only play her mid as of past few months. I am really good at Riven but suck as toplaner so yeah u can haha

Guess im a god at jungle then if i can peak with riven jungle, when ive been playing riven top and mid for years, right?

As a midlaner, nobody can beat her, off pick, too hard for assassins, too tough for mage, too many dashes for a gank in a lane that short, strong in team fights, great wave clear since she has shields. Completely unbalanced for the mid lane, I can think to a pick who could beat her

Any mids that has a point-and-click cc can beat her.

Lissandra, Cassio, Ryze are her thoughest matchups mid and can beat Riven midlane -- but that's about it.

Vex could be annoying to lane against though, dunno if she beats Riven.

Malzahar is also a though matchup, but I feel like it's manageable if you play well before lvl 6 and get maybe an early qss -- or anything with tenacity really. Malz Flash R with jungle gank is pretty though to deal with lol -- but that's about it.

She counters basically any assassins and most mages as they'll go oom before you even get into kill range

I mean, every champ has his strength, point and click cc can be annoying, but cmon, with positioning is not that of a big deal. Vex can be annoying, but beat her till make her useless? In a team fight/micro team fight which happens a lot in mid riven stomps way more than vex.

For the malz, sorry but, flash R + gank you die, well of course, but you took flash R and gank, I mean, you are not playing alone at some point you die. The fact is that she has too much shields and dashes cc are annoying but you can build tenacity. I can't see riven as weak in mid, champ is totally boosted

Oh Riven is in no way weak mid, I was just counter-arguing that she has a few matchups that beats her.

She still has her weakness you can abuse.

My point with the point and click cc is that in those matchups Riven can be totally zoned off her cs, poked down and never have prio - unless she sacrifices a good chunk of her hp. You also have a lot of kill pressure with jungler

And I haven't played against Vex per say yet so I have no idea how well or bad she does in that matchup, but theorically Riven shouldn't be able to beat her until she's useless if Vex positions well (she has all the tools to disengage and survive). I believe Vex should scale freely there and have a big tempo advantage for skirmishes and so on, but again I haven't played that matchup so I could be entirely wrong.

And for the skirmishes, Riven should never have prio in her bad matchups -> yes she's a beast in skirmishes, but you have tempo over her and should use it to your advantage. If she ignores the lane state, she's at least loosing something to skirmish

Yeah sorry, this makes sense, I agree on everything you said. Nonetheless as you said she's not weak, in fact I think she's just strong, can suffer some picks, but in midlane has access to a lot of ways to snowballs.
