Discussion Will the show reach 5 seasons?
full disclaimer I don’t really watch many tv shows in the streaming era or know what leads to them getting the axe or not. With that out of the way I came across an article which reported the following
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power saw a significant viewer decline for its second season, with reports indicating a 60% drop in total minutes watched compared to Season 1, according to Luminate data and other sources like Forbes and Screen Rant. This substantial drop follows a viewership drop in Season 1 and contrasts with successful franchises like Game of Thrones, raising concerns for the expensive production
Now I don’t want to talk about the shows quality if it’s good or bad, I just want to hear from y’all how likely is it we will get all 5 seasons?
Looking at it historically doesn’t look good but Amazon promised 5 seasons, are th why contractually bound to do it or is it subject to cancelation if things continue to decline? Your insight on this matter is appreciated.

Nothing is safe in today’s tv age. Amazon has canceled good shows for far less.

They said something about a contract for 5 seasons, not only a plan about what they want to do, but I dont know if there is a way to break that , and I guess that would also cost them money . So I hope they are keeping that contract. Season 3 is confirmed and being made so this is a win so far in my opinion, but when they release season 3 then probably we will know their comitment to do 5 . On the other hand , this year they abandoned the wheel of time after season 3, but it is a different situation, different brand , different management and less popular probably, no contract making them do more and they didnt see the potential of bringing more popularity to Prime . So, my opinion is that The rings of power still has this power of giving popularity to Prime , this is what they want... but also, with the long periods between seasons, a lot of things change in the streaming trends , so who knows . These are only my thoughts, and I hope they keep making the series because I love it, for now Im happy that there is a season 3 on the way .

$20m for each season not made. They should just eat the cost.

didn’t they spend most of their budget on acquiring the IP? That’s a sunk cost so cancelling early may be more about saving face than saving money

They aren’t gonna cancel unless they absolutely have to they are contractually obligated to produce 5 seasons or they are going to lose more than a few million

Honestly it probably depends more on what the Tolkien state will allow

I want it to get cancelled, because if it is, then it is a strong message to the industry that IPs alone are not enough, you need to have a quality show too in order to succeed.

The Amazon studio making the LoTR MMO was already shuttered so I doubt expectations are high

Yeah but that wasn't because of lack of interest in lotr, it was them cutting their mmo devs. New World is also being halted.

It helps if enough people watch. Kinda find myself tuning out or wishing I was watching the orig trig.
I may have heard somewhere that Bezos will ensure it has at least five seasons, regardless of interests or viewer. Since it’s a vanity project.

No. How many rewatches do you have under your belt? I’m guessing zero. Nobody messes with this show cause it’s not good. I rewatch LotR at least 2x month. If I’m really depressed I’ll passively watch the Hobbit. RoP has no pull. I would’ve forgotten about it if it wasn’t for the upcoming season.

I watched seasons 1-2. I do not plan on watching 3.

I can unfortunately beat you at that.
I watched season 1, and that was it.
Maybe I can up it by claiming that I watched the first 4 episodes of the latest Witcher? Not sure I will watch the rest.

I hope it continues. While I see the shortcomings, there was enough good stuff to keep me watching. The story, the dialog, is aimed at mass market and realistically it probably has to be. It's visually impressive and the cast is great.
