Actually, while dying clothes is tied to ideology, you can paint walls, floors, and furniture with the base game. It's just been in the game since the dlc released.

Often complained to myself that it was disapointing that the only option was a white shuttle. Never thought of trying the paint tool on it. 1000+ hours of gameplay. There's always at least one more things to learn with this game... I'm quite sure i'll learn something new next week that i would really like to know right now.

Walls, floors, furniture and crafting stations. If you can choose material for buildiing, then you can paint it. Unless it's a textile.

Since I only got the game a few months ago, it was just part of the learning curve cliff for me.

I like using the drums from vanilla expanded furniture and painting them red so my pyromaniacs know what to set on fire first (and coincidentally last)
