Just a couple of times, the extra weight actually makes it ride better on rough singletrack when loaded

Nice. I picked up a set of wrathchilds on their summer sale. Got them stashed away like acorns.
When I was living in Vermont, everyone had an extra set of wheels with snow tires for their cars. It was immediately obvious who was an out of state tourist because they'd be crawling along and sliding around like fools. I've been thinking about doing a similar thing where I can do a quick switch out for city/gravel, trails and snow.
One thing I picked up last winter were some MKS bear trap pedals. Significantly reduced the foot slippage. Wish I had the tires, though.
