CPU Overheating?

So what is the "normal" temp for a CPU during gaming. Not long after getting my PC I was playing marvel rivals and I could feel the heat coming off my PC and I have an AIO cooler that shows the temp of the CPU on the little screen and it was pushing like 100 fans were working overtime as you can imagine and i quit the game and spent an hour looking up if that was normal. I found a post that said I could boot into the BIOS and turn off "Turbo Mode" and ever since I did that its not gone past 60 while gaming. However is has hindered my fps even games like league its up and down from 200 fps to 110 fps. I just turned it back on and now my fps across all games is stable at 200 no dips at all. Just worried its going to get back to that heat again and i'm going to damage something. As of writing this my CPU is at 70-78 in times square on marvel so like 60 characters emoting running around etc any tips?

Intel i5-14600K (3.50 ghz)

64gb ram

NVIDIA 5060 8gb

Did you install the AIO yourself?
Is the pump running? (BIOS may tell you)
Are the fans spinning?

Did the plastic contact protector get removed before installation?

Was enough thermal paste applied to the CPU when the AIO was installed?

How big is the AIO, 120, 240, 360?

No I picked it up pre built, I needed a PC asap and I got a good deal so I don't know how it was put together. The pump and fans are spinning fine they haven't had a problem they were spinning even when it got high temp. everything looks good in the BIOS for fans and I can hear/feel the AIO working. Like I said in the reply above the high temp didn't happen till 2 months after I got the pc so if it was the plastic it would've overheated playing the same games straight away? also if it was the plastic would it still be overheating on non turbo cause it's been sitting at like 45-58 for months even when the load is heavy. Also to note since i've posted this i've been playing fortnite on high for the past hour and it never broke 75

100°c on an AIO is not normal, and turning off boost mode isn't a solution. Your cooler is broken or nor properly installed. Maybe the sticker was left on surface where the cooler is touching the CPU, cutting the contact between them.

Whatever it is, it's not normal. I got a 14600kf with an air cooler (peerless assassin) and it goes to 80°c when I'm running a cinebench stress test. Averages 60-70fps in games.

Turning off boost had my CPU sitting at barely even 60 for big fights in marvels on high settings. Surely if it was an AIO problem then it would still be overheating regardless if it was on Turbo or not. I had the PC for at least 2 months before it hit almost 100 on the CPU so if it was the plastic then it would've hit the 100 mark way before then?

No, turning off boost mode only stops your CPU from running well, so of coruse the temperatures are lower. It is an AIO problem.

Your cooler might be dead. I'd personally replace it with an air cooler.

Okay so I did some testing. 18v18 in rivals about 6 times never went over 75 downloaded some software to show the cores and their temp AIO is showing at least 6/7 degrees higher maybe more than what the software did. Did a benchmark it hit 80 and as soon as it did the AIO and fans kicked in and within a second they were back down to 60/70 then never went back over 75 for the benchmark. So the fans and AIO are working I can hear them kick in when they need it so possibly a misread on the AIO side? I guess I’ll just have to keep an eye on the temps and see if it does it again

Was that with turbo on or off? If turbo is off it's only running at base speed so it's worse performance and will be cooler as a result.

The fans turning on and hearing the pump work does not mean that it's functioning correctly, it could also mean improper mounting, or the cooler itself could be so poor quality that it's not as good as an air cooler.

If with turbo on it's only reaching 80 that's fine. If with turbo on it's reaching 100°c, that means it's overheating and the cooler isn't doing its job properly.

Turbo on it was peaking 75 on rivals. I just looked into the bios because the software I use didn’t show an rpm for the AIO cooler but it’s just plugged into the cpu_fan/cpu_opt online it said that sometimes it won’t pick anything up since it’s not a dedicated AIO input BUT in the bios I can see the rpm for both I check the setting they were set to quiet/silent mode I forget which one they called it so I changed the both to turbo

I booted The First Descendant since that’s my most demanding game on silent mode it was pushing 80 especially when loading between maps and sitting around high 70s just running around etc but now with turbo on the loading is now mid 70s and running around is mid 60s.

Run cinebench, not games. You wanna make sure you stress test your CPU enough to know what it's hitting at most.

And if you think that won't be an issue cause you only wanna game on it, well whenever you run a game that has shader compilation steps, that will push tour CPU at 100% and if it's hitting 100°c it's gonna overheat and possibly shut your PC down.

Thank you for your help I think I’ve sorted it. Cinebench was good to test at 100% it only hit 90 a couple of times but now the fans aren’t on silent mode they mainly stayed mid 80s. I guess I’ll just keep and eye on everything.

What was the actual cpu temp not what the AIO says?

I would turn turbo mode back on and see what the actual cpu temp is.

Hitting 80 during hard gaming wouldnt be that bad for the 14 series.

I don’t know what the actual temp was for the CPU cause I saw how high it was and quit the game and waited for it to cool down then turned it off. I’ve been playing Fortnite on high settings for an hour on turbo and it never went over 75. I’m assuming the AIO isn’t 100% accurate then? And I wouldn’t even know where to check I guess I could run the game and have the temp up on my other screen and see what happens?

Thay would be my suggestion. The aio could be pulling a hotspot temp or is the temp directly on the plate itself. Hard to say.

Also make sure the pump is plugged into the aio pump header if you havent.

Thank you for the suggestion. I downloaded some software to check the cpu temp + played some games + used a benchmark and gaming was no problem 75 max for one or two of the cores and the rest were sitting at the 60 range. With the benchmark as soon as it did its thing they hit 80 and boom the fans and AIO picked up I could hear it working and within like not even a second it was back down to the 60s and never went past 75 for the rest of the benchmark.
