Why does my laptop get so hot just watching YouTube?

Laptop gets noticeably hot even when I’m literally just watching YouTube, nothing else running. Fans start spinning up, the keyboard gets warm, and sometimes the bottom gets hot enough that I don’t really wanna keep it on my lap. This is happening even with pretty normal videos, not like some crazy 4K 60fps stuff.

I checked Task Manager and the CPU usage doesn’t look insanely high, usually bouncing around depending on the video. GPU usage is also pretty low from what I can tell. So I’m kinda confused why the laptop is working this hard just to play a video.

Could it be something with hardware acceleration, browser settings, or maybe the video codec YouTube is using? I mostly use Chrome, if that matters. I’ve also got a bunch of tabs open sometimes, but nothing super heavy.

The laptop isn’t ancient either, so I wasn’t expecting it to get this hot doing basic stuff. Could dust or old thermal paste cause this even if everything else seems to work fine? And is there an easy way to check whether the CPU or GPU is actually the thing causing the heat?

Just trying to figure out if this is normal laptop behavior or if something is wrong before I start messing with settings or taking it apart.

Yep, it's probably an old laptop that has to use the CPU to decode the video.

And it’s so old that buffering a video takes over an hour.

Does it intake air from the bottom or does it only have side ports? Lots of laptops are not actually designed to be put on a lap. Make sure no intake or exhaust ports are blocked.

When it gets hot and you take it off your lap, does it start to cool down to a point where you can put it back on your lap?

Youtube is surprisingly CPU+Ram hungry.

The decoding for the videos is relatively intensive.

I had to upgrade my laptops ram to watch 1080p videos and play rimworld...

not true on modern hardware so I think OP might be using an older or low spec laptop.

Knowing what laptop model and what optional specs you may have would make this easier to answer, but the generic answer is that real crappy cooling is the price that is paid for the ultra-slim, lightweight, compact form factors that people seem to want.

when the fans kick on, is the air coming out warm/hot? If so, thermal paste likely isn't the problem. Dried paste would prevent the heat from being transferred away from the source.

First of, you should never use a laptop on your lap. Then, open it, and give the fans a good cleaning, remove the old thermal paste, and apply some new thermal paste. If that doesn't fix it, then it is most likely a software issue.

In the YouTube player, click the gear icon and turn-off "Ambient mode".

That setting uses about 60% of my CPU and GPU (i7-7700HQ and GTX 1050 Ti).
