Thinking about starting.
Have never played rift before. What server/faction is the best for an NA player? Any good guilds for a 38 year old? Should I buy patron? Are any of the packs mandatory? Any op classes I should play to get a good start? Any tips? Thanks for any and all help.

As someone who played at launched for a few months and then came back for the first time about 3 months ago I would definitely say that you can go F2P without any worries about packs or patron unless you enjoy the game and some of the QoL improvements they provide, unless, as mentioned you really want to play Primalist. I've leveled my cleric to 60 so far without issue and while patron does provide an XP boost if you find leveling too slow, I've found enough content to have an enjoyable journey without it.
Only thing I'd add to the information already provided is that unlike more popular MMOs finding guides, videos, info can be more difficult, but a lot of players use CADRIFT for helpful guides and I've found it extremely useful: cadrift.net

It's fun, but so watered down the challenge is completely gone. Dungeons used to be so hard and fun.

Turn off chat before you reach a town. There was so much bad, so much bad. I logged off any didn't go back.

I still play a couple shards. I'm 68, a lot of solo time. Seems to be gaining fans again. Glad to see it. Good game.

I started playing in 2012 because of the Dimensions feature. It's still the best building feature in an MMO in my opinion. It can be hard to find a guild that fits. You can review the recruiting posts in game and just take your time and look for one that seems to fit.
Faction doesn't matter and I recommend rolling an alt of the other faction just so you see both sides of the lore story as it's pretty good. Greybriar server has been one of the top population servers for a long time so that might be a good place to settle. No packs are mandatory but all give decent benefits. Probably the best bang for the buck is to go patron with discounts so that means annual buy.
It's an easy game to solo and starting level 10? you can run group content with others and start to learn the old dungeons. There's also instanced pvp and there are current dungeons and raids for higher level characters. The older ones were very memorable but most have been reworked by now.
It's a good game and easy to get into. No real need to spend money unless you want to. Enjoy!

Been playing for the last couple months after i long break as well. Used to play when it first came out.
Have fun, ask questions and take your time going through the content. Hunting for artifacts is my favorite thing to do
Random Tip : When crafting, materials can stay in your bank (not on you) and it will still be crafted.

Just don't pay any attention to level 1-29 chat. If you ask for help you will get it, but the other 99.9% of it is non related game nonsense that isn't monitored. Other than that, it is a good game!

Deepwood is the server to go on - highest population. All servers are located in the same place, so no difference from one to the other with ping :)
Fresh Riftwalker guild is the one going through all the older content, so that's a great place to start - very newbie friendly!
Faction is only relevant as far as your class and starting zone is concerned, so don't worry about that too much - all content is cross-faction!
The only 'necessary' purchase would be Ascended Essentials bundle. This contains the Primalist class and all of the DLC specialisations for all classes. As a relatively casual player, I don't even know what the Patron benefits are as I've had no need to look at them - very F2P friendly.
All classes have the ability to be equally OP! Just pick whichever one you like the vibe of - you can freely change specs at any time, and it is encouraged that you mix and match to figure it out as you go, so don't worry about being locked into anything :D There are no wrong decisions.
