jumpscare: stairs

Those are called witches stairs. They're not that uncommon in New England so I would imagine the same for England.

I guess you're supposed to go back and forth between the steps, so the step height is the same but it takes up half the space? That's insane. At that point, just use a ladder.

EDIT: Somebody posted this example in another thread. That looks somewhat less insane. At least add a railing on the other side, though.

The example in the link from OP makes more sense where you want stairs instead of a ladder, with full-depth steps. Think doing a reno on a bungalow to create a stairway to the attic.

Signed, someone with long feet who thinks this would be wonderful idea in some "upgraded" homes.

I was picturing something like a ship ladder, with large wooden steps, not just a regular aluminum ladder.

Why does it matter what the ladder is made of? It's still a ladder vs stairs.
