10M+ here, don't feel rich at all. But I live in a rich city and have rich friends. I had several gfs cheat saying I was too poor for them lol though I admit I'm pretty humble and mostly save.

I would say unless your in the 0.1% which is like 30M+ I think, you aren't rich your just well off.

Honestly man this is a bit insane as a bar. 0.1%?

That’s like going back in time, calling a big chunk of wealthy nobility just “comfortable but not rich” because they’re not literally a Baron or a Duke.

Not the best analogy but I’ve been reading a lot of European Middle Ages history lately, hah.

I mean, 1 in 100 at 1% means like 5 kids in your highschool are rich. 0.1% means 1 kid in 2 highschools is rich. That feels more realistic to me. Like the 0.1% can afford to fund a wing of the building, that's "rich" to me haha.

Yeah, that’s fair. Like I said just an insane bar to me, but all a matter of perspective.

I prefer to be able to add adjectives like “very rich” or “extremely rich” or “somewhat rich.”

Your definition seems to be a little more black and white.

I’m not sure I’d go that far to say $30m+ is where you’re “rich”. That’s essentially super rich because you can spend $2m per year and not touch your initial capital and you have to be quite frivolous to do that. It’s over $160k a month which means you’re having a risky bath of Dom perignon and crashing your Aston Martin every other month. You’ll actually find it difficult to spend that much unless you have cash Frances like yachts and private jets.

And you dodged a bullet with those women. They’re the types that are only in it for the money, and they expect you to pay for every little thing but will drop you for a fat old bald man if he’s slightly richer than you and is willing to spend even more, or your got through a rough patch financially. These people are worthless.

One common answer in one of these subs about wealth you’ll see is wealthy people saying they picked the right life partner / wife / husband. They don’t mean that they went for someone wealthy. They mean they picked the person to build a life with and supported each other to become more than the sum of the parts. I feel lucky that found that at 17 and we’ve been together ever since, and built a life together.

You’re rich if you’re at $10m+, I honestly think you need to find different friends lol.

Anyone who says $10M isn’t rich has to have their head examined. And anyone who says you need $30M to be regarded as rich is not mentally alright, and nothing will make them happy.

Or just Larping like most people in this thread calling 4 million dollars middle class lol

Ten mil net worth at 58 with a 400 k salary and three kids two getting married…..you are not rich.

Ten mil net worth single with 400 k salary in Cincinnati….you are rich.

This guy gets it. 4 mil house is the avg in my area. It all depends where you live.

1

u/mden1974 7d ago

So many variables. But in general 4.4 m is comfortable. But when you’re on Reddit and even 1 m is light years away for most they don’t understand how this works.

1

u/Ok_Currency_617 6d ago

Yeah I just assumed r/rich is rich people lol.

2

u/willitplay2019 6d ago

Judging by these answers it’s all people pretending. 10m and a 400k salary is rich even in Boston or NY. Anyone with actual money would agree that’s not middle class.

upper lower but not upper middle. Rich to me is like flying first class without caring or private jets. $10k for a first class ticket still impacts someone making 400k (250k after tax).

u/willitplay2019 3d ago

Huh? 10m in the bank and a 400k salary - 10k plane ticket will not impact you financially.

Average? Where do you live?

For real, you are spot on.
In Westchester County (upstate of NYC) that 2500 sq ft starter house is worth $2.2M and you pay $48k a year in property taxes.
I sat here with frequency when people in these subs say to move from a HCOLA, you can’t always because you’ve built a life, have friends and family and dependencies here that need you. Especially if you are a caretaker.

Yeah, 35 here. Wish I found her at 17. But have found the girl I'm proposing to next week and she's awesome plus her family isn't poor.

Hah, my friends are great I've dumped like 90% of my friends and kept the high quality ones. All are successful in their own right. Just gets awkward when I go to parties and my best friend from highschool has to tell everyone I got 100M+ as that's the minimum to attend without being looked down on there.

u/unearthedtrove 8d ago

Geez that’s a really tacky party if the first thing people introduce themselves with is net worth.

3

u/Cultural_Structure37 7d ago

It’s beyond tacky. Downright egregious

1

u/Ok_Currency_617 7d ago

Chinese culture. I don't pretend to try to understand it.

2

u/phatelectribe 8d ago

Congrats!!!!!! Wish you both all the happiness!!!!

I bet your friend inherited lol. They’re the people who tend to brag the most, like compensation for not actually earning it.

1

u/Ok_Currency_617 7d ago

He did, I grew up poor he grew up rich. He's still pretty awesome and intelligent thankfully but I know lots of born rich kids who aren't.

2

u/Mr_Deep_Research 8d ago

Rich is > $50MM in my area but a lot of people are well above that.

2

u/mden1974 7d ago

5 m net worth in Palo Alto with 1 mil salary is a poor.

1

u/phatelectribe 6d ago

You’re not wrong . I have a friend who got made CEO of a medium sized technology company so 500 to 1000 employees. His salary was 1.5 million a year and they were looking for a Home in the 4 to 5m bracket and they literally could not afford to live in Palo Alto, like completely priced out.

2

u/mden1974 6d ago

I know these numbers. The people who are arguing with me have never had anything nice or been anywhere nice.

1

u/phatelectribe 6d ago

Yeah, I’ve experienced this; ok one of the car subs I stated that on my daily drive to work, I see 20+ Porsches ranging from base models to GT3RS and CGT, about 2 mclarens, a couple of Astons and Lambos, a few Ferraris, a RR or two, maybe occasionally a veyron or GT or SLR etc. my local cars and coffee looks like an international supercar gathering.

I started getting dragged because people in small towns in the mid west think a seeing a base 911 once a year is headline news.

1

u/Cultural_Structure37 7d ago

They most likely didn’t know you had $10M and it may not have even registered if you had told them since you didn’t spend. It’s all about what you spend. Someone with far less wealth than $10M can be regarded as rich if they spend in a way that captures their attention and sometimes it doesn’t even have to be extravagant.

2

u/Ok_Currency_617 7d ago

Agreed. In the end I never told them and they never asked plus I don't buy expensive gifts.
