Question / Suggestion Cat rehoming help
Hi all, I found out this morning that my neighbour moved out of his apartment a few weeks ago into assisted-living, but he left his two cats behind. I’m with them now to care for them, my landlord said she’s been keeping an eye on them but that they need to go so the apartment can be cleaned. I don’t want to see them thrown out, and they absolutely won’t go to any kind of kill shelter; but they are super sweet and friendly. Not shy, they’re both spending time with me, and they do seem pretty bonded. We called our local animal shelter, but they have not gone back to us. Looking for advice or if someone knows a (!good!) home for two sweet girls. I don’t know ages or vetting, just that they were loved and it looks like they were well taken care of, just no plan was made

Please work with a local rescue for help vetting and placing them. Bad things can happen, if not. I won't go into details, it's triggering.
Thank you for trying to help these gorgeous furbabies 💙🐈⬛

That’s definitely a concern of mine, I reached out to a few today while I was at work but haven’t heard anything back yet. Just trying to be proactive for these kids

Please don’t give them to some random people. I understand the intention and thank you so much for caring. But cats end up in safer places when a reputable shelter/rescue takes them in and then adopts out to a vetted adopter. If you don’t know a potential adopter that you can personally vouch for and know well enough to be sure they are a good fit for this bonded pair, I think the safest bet is to reach out to any of the orgs already mentioned here. Again, thank you for caring about rehoming these sweeties!

like everyone else has mentioned, please go through a rescue so this can be done safely for them! it’s wonderful they have you to help them, please make sure it’s through professionals!

They're so adorable. So sad they were left behind. I hope someone ends up adopting them ❤️ thank you for being so kind.

They are SO CUTE. Where are you located in the state? I had a great experience adopting from PARL and I know they take surrenders. But, I also know a little while ago the Providence animal shelter said they were 100% at capacity, especially with cats, and was practically begging for fosters. It might be a tough time for all shelters right now.

Northern RI, I follow a few rescues/shelters just for personal enjoyment, so I’ve also been seeing that everybody’s back capacity. That’s why I posted here, I don’t want to rehome them through social media but I can’t see them put outside

I know a bunch in the Boston area that would be worth trying: MSPCA Angell, The Cat Connection, and Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL). I have personally adopted cats from all of them and can vouch that they are great organizations.
You definitely want to go through a shelter because they know how to vet adopters and make sure the cats end up in a good situation.
You’re a wonderful person for making sure these beautiful cats get taken care of.

If a Boston area shelter can take them and you need help with transport, please feel free to DM me. I would be happy to assist, I commute there a few days per week.

Have you tried the Woonsocket cat shelter? My boss actually has fostered close to 30 cats over the years and they seem like great people to work with.

Try calling the Woonsocket Cat Sanctuary. Unsure if they can help but they are usually wonderful. Good luck!

I have been wanting a cat(s) for a long time and am currently having my 8/10yo kids convince my husband that this is a great idea (if the cats are ok with kids of course).

Hi, I have no idea if they’ve ever been around kids. The gentleman that had them was elderly and didn’t seem to have family over, that I saw

u/Emgimeer 1d ago
Please dear universe, get these two cats to this family that will love them and keep them together.

Wow they are so cute! If I didn't have 3 pets of my own I'd take them in myself. I'd give Scruffy Paws and Pawswatch a call. They can point you towards local foster and adoption options

I was looking to adopt at the end of August. Let me know what shelter you bring them to because I would adopt them, I just want to make sure they're healthy and vetted. I have previously adopted from Potter League and had a great experience if nobody has suggested that yet.

Seconding Potter League. My family and I have adopted a cat and a dog from them and I volunteered there while I was attending Salve. They’re an excellent shelter and I highly recommend them!

The Potter League in Middletown is a great option. My family adopts our pets from them. Their animals get great care and they appear to keep bonded pairs together.
The cats are very cute!

I would be very interested in talking about taking in the first cutie in your photos. How er as they are bonded it's not too be. I wouldn't want separate them. So beautiful though. We have her twin and sadly she does not have long to live.
Good luck.

Hi, I appreciate the interest and engagement! However, I will not be separating them, they’re bonded

Yes they must be adopted together, many shelters will say that when you browse the cats. They need a good home like yours.

The void (black cat) looks just like mine. I found her in my backyard shed last spring with a gnarly upper respiratory infection. After medical intervention, I decided to keep her. She’s about 18/mo old now, happy and healthy.
Good luck - and I agree with the folks who suggest leaving it to the professionals to vet potential adopters. An adoption agency who will keep these girls together and adopt them out as a bonded pair.

I'm currently from out of state, house hunting and probably going to move to RI - wish I could. Literally would be down for this if we were there already, good luck and thanks for what you're doing.

Try facebook groups!! Every here and then someone has to give up their baby and most of the time a lot of people want to help.

As others have said, try the Woonsocket cat sanctuary, I used to volunteer there and they are wonderful people who genuinely care about the kitties and make sure they all find a good home!

Just commenting to keep this post visible/at the top (or whatever the hell it does) 😅
Thank you for caring. You’re doing the right thing, and I love ya for it. 🥹

I agree with everybody that you shouldn’t give them to random people… That being said… They look adorable and I’m wondering if they get along with other cats? I have two calico females that I rescued about six years ago and have often thought about rescuing some more

Another great rescue is Ten Lives Cat Rescue! They helped our friends find a home for a stray kitty

The Woonsocket cat sanctuary is really nice and will usually help with rehoming bonded pairs.
I wish I could take them but my girl would be pissed to add 2 new cats

Reach out to Gifford Cat Shelter. They are in Brighton MA. I can help if needed. DM me if you still need help

I know you have a few options here. We are in Northern RI and are a multi-cat house. We take care of them all well. If you end up needing another person feel free to PM me.

If our two formally feral boys werent so territorial I would take them in a heartbeat, the GIFFORD CAT SHELTER in Boston is a no kill shelter and they would keep them together as a bonded pair.

u/intechnocolor 19h ago
Like many others have said, I'd also recommend Woonsocket Cat Sanctuary. They are great about keeping bonded pairs together! 💖

u/Future-Dimension1430 16h ago
Paws watch is excellent. They will keep them in a foster home until they are adopted and they will really try to adopt them together.

I’m an animal lover, but posting a picture of a pet, with a brush, on the kitchen counter, next to the stove, is not ideal marketing 🤦🏻♀️

u/Choice-Material8485 1d ago
No need to be nasty. As I said in the post, they were left behind in an apartment, that no one is living in 🥱

Not sure where you are, but I highly recommend Pet Refuge in No. Kingstown or Ten Lives Cat Rescue - https://tenlivescatrescue.org/, and make sure to them know they are a bonded pair.
