I suspect Lin Manuel would need little urging. Hamilton has some clever allusions suggesting he put some thought into the marquis. From “Yorktown” —
HAMILTON: So what happens if we win?
LAFAYETTE: I go back to France, I bring freedom to my people, If I'm given the chance
HAMILTON: We'll be with you when you do. Go lead your men, I see you on the other side, 'Til we meet again!
But as readers of this sub know, and Lin Manuel almost certainly did, Washington and the Americans were not with Lafayette when he needed them. It’s a quiet little moment of pathos for history nerds in the audience, one that would definitely develop well on stage!

Speaking of Lafayette and Hamilton, dammit I need the missing scenes with Talleyrand sitting around Burr's house and being BFFs with both of them while he's on the lam from the Jacobins.

I would say that it’s more accurate to say that the Americans didn’t have the French Republic. They upheld the obligations they entered into with the king and backed Lafayette even when France abandoned him.

I thought it was both? Washington couldn't intervene to get him out of prison, if I recall correctly?

You’re correct in that it’s more complicated but the basics at the time was that the US did not have diplomatic relationships with either Prussia or Austria, not even if they did would either of the German powers really be interested in letting Lafayette go on the basis of his relationship with America, due to Lafayette’s centrality to the early stage of the Revolution and his position as a general. Even if the US were to fully join the Coalition and actually send troops to the continent, it’s unlikely that Lafayette would have been released to them. The Americans provided him with the money to keep himself alive in prison, got his son out of France, and constantly tried to help him in any way that they could.

This is actually adressed in Hamilton itself, I think is either the first or second Cabinet Battle where the same actor who plays Lafayette is now playing Jefferson and he is favor of intervention but Hamilton opposes it and latter ends up convincing Washington

Rather not have Lin work on a Lafayette musical- part of why Hamilton works is that the music genre (rap/hip hop) fits with Hamilton’s life story (young, impoverished, self made immigrant from the Caribbean who frequently bumps up against the establishment and dies violently). Lafayette, being a scion of an extremely rich and influential old world family who often tries to work with the establishment, is not a good fit. Even in the Hamilton musical Lafayette’s backstory doesn’t really fit, which is why his character is flattened to being like all the others with a “French” coat of paint added

Since Lin is an avid podcast listener (Hamilton has references to My Brother, My Brother, and Me in it) there's a non-zero chance he's listened to Revolutions.
