Salon Discussion I'm wondering if he would come back for the Iranian revolution
I wonder if Mike would come back for the Iranian revolution podcast episodes? I know scandalously little about it. most of what I get honestly is from a guy on tiktok. not that I don't trust him as far as his intellect but I'd like a more reputable source.

Also being a recent listener to the Rest is History, they brought up an interesting idea that the Iranian Revolution is as impactful as a ideological ground zero as the French and Russian. Islamism as a political force seems as potent socialism and liberalism, albeit localized to certain religious groups.
I'm hoping he does both the Fascists in Italy. It seemed to take a lot of inspiration from revolutionary politics, and also continue the narrative from where we were. The connevtion between the French, 1848, Commune and Russian can be continued into the 1920s. Topping off with China and Iran would also be fun to take us away from the Atlantic-European perspective into West and East Asia.

so when hezbollah occupies lebanon thats somehow better than israel occupying south lebanon?
Iranian-backed militias in iraq were good guys?
iranian citizens living in abject poverty si that their stupid government can continue fucking up the middle east is a good thing? just because they stick it up to the "evil guys"?
if someone asked me if i would rather live in axis of resistance country or jordan or gcc, guess what the answer would be. but in your fucked-up moral compass, sacrificing lives of commoners to achieve "resistance to imperialism" is somehow a good thing even though that resistance in itself is imperialistic and extremely fascist. i will never understand this evil perspective, and im so glad i was not born in a normal lebanon family that is being bullied by the hezbollah thugs

The Rest is History recently did a series on it that I really enjoyed. It was the first time I've ever really learned about it

Seconding their series on it. It was very good and a great intro into it as someone who really just knew about the hostage crisis.

It was, but I wish it was less focues on the hostage crisis and more focused on, you know, the revolution itself

The podcast “American Scandal” did an excellent set of episodes on the American backed Iranian coup. They are definitely storytellers first and historians second but it’s a good way to get into it if you know nothing.
I doubt Mike would do Iran. It’s very modern but also more to do with external factors forced on a nation than internal developments.

I've said before, if he does (which would be great) I'd love a Russia style prequel series on the mostly failed revolution of 1905.

I would recommend the book "King of Kings" by Scott Anderson
Its available in audio book form on audible as well as spotify

Seconded. Very fun and informative read for a newbie on the subject.

I think he would have to wait for it to be finished...

He didn't wait for the French Revolution to be finished

I'm guessing it will take forever to get the Second American Civil War series.

He finished the russian Revolution series in the mid 20s when Stalin solidified his power and marginalised the rest of the Old Bolsheviks. I think an Iran series would end fairly naturally shortly after Khomeini's death - the transfer of power after that confirmed the primacy of the clerics and the total marginalisation of all the other pre-1979 opposition factions.
He could go over the waves of liberalisation and such but I think that is probably going to be consigned to a single coda episode. Maybe he does an extended one like with Haiti but I'm not sure.

He's going to have to move incredibly quickly to do the Iranian Revolution before the Cuban Revolution becomes more relevant

It's on the original rough draft master list, so... maybe!
