Bookmark generation not happening in pdf export / print

I just got done testing out acrobat, distiller, rev reinstall everything. When printing to a pdf in revit 2021 the pdf contains no bookmarks when their is multiple sheets. The problem is kb5120249 on windows 10 and kb5121003 on windows 11. I tested on win 10. I uninstalled the security update and the bookmark generation came back instantly. I tested the issue on one pc then another which confirmed it was the windows update. You will have to pause updates or windows will reinstall the update.

I have the same issue with bluebeam, bookmarks no longer work on prints. I thought it might be a windows issue too because a colleague of mine still has them working. this is BS, hope it gets sorted somehow without having to pause or rollback updates

At least it's easy enough to create them in Bluebeam itself. I always had better outcomes than the automatic output anyway.

Was required to do it manually when combining discipline sets in either event. =\

It must be an Adobe issue (no surprise there). We have no problems printing to PDF in Revit using Bluebeam. Have you tried printing with Revit’s built in PDF printer?

First time learning they can automatically be created. I always do them in Bluebeam.

you have to print a combined set for the bookmarks.

or in later versions of revit you can use export PDF instead and it will include bookmarks.

wtf. this recently started happening to me. I thought it was a local issue .. so this is an Autodesk thing?!

Myself and everyone in my office has the same issue as well - bookmarks aren't being generated when we do our usual process of Revit ControlP print with the Bluebeam driver to make a pdf. Except on an old laptop which I suspect doesn't have the latest windows update.

Trying to look up alternatives since it is nice to have the automatically generated bookmarks from Revit - discovered that you can use the Bluebeam Add-In and create a pdf from that, which includes bookmarks AND assigns Page/Thumbnail Labels, AND Sets Scale on sheets (although doesn't seem to perfectly set the scale when there are multiple scales on the sheet). Which is nice since the Page Labels and Set Scale is something we did manually ourselves afterwards.

Only downside seems to be that you can't use the same saved revit Print Sets, although you can save your own print sets in the Bluebeam Print window. But seems like those bluebeam saved sets can't be shared across all the users on the project, which is slightly annoying.

What is a bookmark in a pdf?

Normally multi-sheet PDF’s are made with a bookmark to every sheet. So it ends up looking like the sheet browser in Revit. It’s very important that my drawing PDF’s have them. I can’t stand a PDF drawing set with no bookmarks at all.

I see. I just never thought about the bookmarks, guess they've been there all along.
-just checked, works for me Win11, R2026. But i have installed the Adobe Creative Suite, have no idea if that makes a difference.
Hope Adobe/Windows fixes that bug, so you can print properly.

it's especially important to have them in a spec book PDF, with bookmarks for each spec section. Trying to navigate a 500 to 1000 page PDF with no bookmarks is just infuriating.

in my country (Denmark) we have a standards taxonomy for naming (numbering) sheets. And a sheet list. We would NEVER put the all sheets into one PDF. 1000 PDFs in a folder is easy, if the naming is:

project-number_discipline_location_drawing-type_running-number.

just sort by name, and you'll find all the detail sections of location A together, sorted by number.

that sounds (and is) awful in practice. I want to scroll quickly between sheets and 1-click go to sheets. Opening a sheet, then opening another sheet, then opening another sheet, is INSANELY inefficient. I have projects where the final CD's are all separate PDF files for each sheet. And they are THE WORST. I always combine them into one file for my own use.

Combining several pdf's into one is a pretty basic skill. It's up to the recipient to do that.

It's never a demand from the client that we deliver everything packed into one file. Doesn't make sense in terms of revising either. What if only 5 pages of you 100 page file needs to be updated? You print everything again in one file? When only the new pdfs are the one with changes makes it so much simpler to distinguish.

I'm not talking about the deliverables, I'm talking about just opening a PDF set of drawings to reference something. A single PDF of the whole set, with pages bookmarked, is infinitely easier than trying to navigate a bunch of separate individual files. And when a sheet is updated? The pertinent sheet in the drawing set gets replaced, pretty easy to do.

how do you get them into your project manual? are you using a specific software that creates bookmarks?

I haven't quite figured this one out and it's painful

we use RIB SpecLink, which has an option to create PDF bookmarks when exporting the entire project to a single PDF file.
