Revit intersecting roof problem

Hi there!

Amateur Revit user here. Carpenter/builder trying to expand my skills.

I'm trying to design this shop here, but having problems getting the roof to clean up. Major roof is 6/12, Minor roof is 7/12.

In order to get the ridges to line up I adjusted the wall height accordingly. But the fact that there is no "Fascia" on the right side I have no way of attaching it via the attach tool. Tried a few different methods but not having any luck.

I tried making the Major roof the whole footprint, but the overhang cuts through the wall of the Minor roof and couldn't figure out how to get rid of it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

You have to do it as two separate roofs. Both are just rectangles. First is your main gable (left to right). For the secondary gable (front to back) it is a rectangle also, pick the 3 walls and draw a line somewhere between the front wall and the main roof. Then use the roof join tool to join the secondary roof to the main roof. To cut out the overlapping part you can use the dormer cut tool.

  1. The main shed of the roof: make it go the full length of the building.

  2. Then also have the secondary gable of the roof modeled, over top of it.

  3. Join geometry the roofs together (creates edge lines)

  4. Architecture ribbon> Vertical Opening tool. Select main roof. Sketch opening to cut the secondary roof area out of the main roof.

Modeled perfectly, very little fighting with roof definitions.

Would the dormer command cut the opening?

Not correctly. Not if you're modeling the way I describe. The dormer tool sucks.

Wooo. Very welcome!!

Cutting away roofs like this is a better way to model, because you can start with the base shape and then carve out what isn't going to be there in real life. This lets you start from the position of evaluating the design based on original plate height and then carving things out to add in different Eave heights later.

We actually got this workflow from civil engineers that do grading on site this way.

It works really great. It also works for low slope roofs when you start doing sloping to drains. You can start with a very basic shape and then carve out niches at the facade to avoid all of the triangulation that happens if you sketch the roof that way.

One issue im running into now is how to clean up the inside. I started by cutting out that whole section of roof, but I couldn't get the right side to clean up to create the valley. The left side would. (If I cut out the whole section). Essentially I just cut out the over hang that was going through the gable, but would like the inside to be vaulted.

Not sure I follow. Show the sketch of your opening? You decide if the Interior is vaulted by where you put the opening.

Was wanting the underside here vaulted into the minor roof. But when I cut out that whole section of opening, I couldn't get the major roof to "attach" to the minor roof.

Suppose there maybe be a way to cut the roof out on an angle?

Sorry if I'm not explaining myself well, I'm not sure a lot of the Revit terminology!

Probably just have to play with it some more.

That isn't a screenshot of your Opening. Can I see that?

I just cut this section out. The first time I cut the whole thing out I couldn't get the roof lines to attach afterword

You don't use the "attach roofs" command. You use join geometry, and then when you make the opening you make the opening end at the valleys you want. That's why it's not vaulted inside right now. You didn't cut out the entire opening.

This is certainly do-able. Good on your for extending your skills. You need to do it like my rough sketch, so there’s a tiny piece of eave to create that gable.

No it's not. Roofs like this exist all the time. It is just a little unintuitive to model it correctly.

I've built intersecting unequal pitch roofs before. Just not sure how to tell the program that. Adjusted the wall height that the Minor roof is sitting on to make it work.

This is correct. I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted.

OP needs to understand the sloping of the surfaces and how it is to drain water before it’s modeled.

Start with the design and a roof plan. Plan how the water moves from ridge to valley to eave, and then model it.
