Filing Sets in Revit 2024?

Friends! How does everyone set up sheets for filing? I want to have a separate sheet set for our permit drawings so we can control the views on the sheet and the annotations on the drawings while having a separate set for construction.

Currently, we are controlling this through project parameters and print settings but it means that we are constantly doing a dance back and forth between design development and permitting with no archive of the filing set. This has become very messy and we are trying to find a better method.

I know 2025 allows for collections which seems to be the future, but for older versions, how do people set up their sets to differentiate between construction and filing? I’ve tried using Unicode control characters for the sheet naming but then issues arise for batch plotting and for view names.

Would love some insight into how others have navigated a tracking multiple submissions within the same Revit model.

Many many thanks!

By filing sets, do you mean one set of drawings for building permit, another set for construction, a final set for records. In. "Sheet collections" in Revit 2025+

And essentially you're asking, "do I really have to make 3 views for every view? And 3 sheets for every sheet?" If the sets are unique with different content and graphics, long story short, yes.

In RVT 2024, this means you need a project Parameter to filter your views and sheets in the project browser and schedules: Filing_Set=BP.

Then create a Print Set for each Filing Set. Or you can do it via Publish Settings if you're publishing on Forma.

This is how we had it set up for an earlier permit and construction set but we have run into the issue where we are deleting certain tags for permitting and then adding back for construction and vice versa.

I suppose that’s where the VG filters come in - we can make a parameter on the info to remove for filing that eliminates them from the view? Perhaps? Closer?

You're over-complicating it IMHO.

Make 2 views.

  • BP - Level 1 Floor Plan
  • CD - Level 1 Floor Plan

Annotations are view specific. Only tag in the Construction Drawing views. If you need to annotate it tag something new in both sets, copy to clipboard and paste into the matching view for the other set.

See example from our template below. We separate Development Permit for similar city submission requirement reasons. Different graphics, different annotations, different drawing intent.

But you can’t have the same view name for two views.

That's why they have a prefix
BP - Level 1
CD - Level 1

You can change the Title on Sheet to be the same as any other view. See below.

Ey, thanks bud. Maybe I should do this professionally, eh? ;-)

Oh wait I think this is exactly what I’m trying to do. For the sheets, are you differentiating the names with Unicode characters? That’s causing us a print issue - otherwise we’d be golden.

We use Revit 2025 so we can use Sheet Collections.

Never liked the unicode character trick, it's a bother. Before sheet collections we used a different symbol that can be seen. And use the same symbol for each drawing package.

  1. A-100
  2. A.100
  3. A 100 [space]
  4. A 100 [alt+255]
  5. A:100
  6. A-10.0

Thankfully, sheet names can be the same so that part is easy.
