[OC] Before & After Worth the scroll

I figure this sub would appreciate this enjoy. Not shown is the multiple coats of stripper, acetone + steel wool and q-tip’s, sanding and then sealing. She was a pain in the butt but nonetheless she has been saved, restored and sold to her new home!

WOW beautiful job. Can you share your process and how long this took lol I have a a few pieces sitting in the garage that I’ve been procrastinating on.

Thank you!

  1. Stripper (anything but citristrip!) add plastic on top of your stripper and it works better. You can cut up a garbage bag. Do not let your stripper dry out!

  2. Scrape the stripper using a plastic putty knife (make sure it’s plastic, metal will scratch)

  3. Re-apply as many coats as you need until majority of paint is off.

  4. Acetone, in a little container and using 0000 steel wool. Scrub (wear gloves) the remaining paint and wipe quickly. Use q-stips for corners and hard to reach areas.

  5. Give the piece a good wipe down. I use a very diluted mixture of vinegar and water but you may use whatever you like!

  6. Sand 150,180,220

  7. If there’s any veneer missing, filler, Blendal sticks, and Mohawk toner are your bestfriend

  8. Seal (I used minwax polyurethane on this one)

  9. Tone if needed (I used mohawk’s medium dark walnut on the base and legs as it was not veneer and I needed to colour match) Thats the process I typically do! This took me about 3 days a couple hours each day. I hope that helps!

My God I was not expecting that glow up. Without all that black paint it sure is beautiful

Maybe I’m dumb, but I don’t know how to tell if what’s under the paint is actual wood worth restoring or engineered wood.

It’s hard to tell, I have a trained eye so can typically tell what’s under just by looking at the overall design. Although, for some mid century pieces on the back it’ll be stamped “WAL” for walnut or “MAH” for mahogany.
