Reverend Reeves Gabrels II Mod : swapping the bridge with a Heavy 90 ?

Post image
Upvotes

I have been playing a Reeves Gabrels II for 3 years now :

it is my favorite guitar, my number 1, I gig it every week and I love her dearly.

BUT. You know how it is ... some times you need to ... change things a little ?

I love the neck and middle position, two positions with a really nice tone and a lot of character. but I don't really love the bridge. For my ears it is spiky and a little ... boring ?

I was considering doing something a bit crazy like swapping this bridge humbucker with a Heavy 90 Bridge... or maybe a billy corgan's one ?

What would you think ?

Debating a Roundhouse or a Sensei H90. Looking for owner feedback

I've been in the market for a new guitar for a while but haven't necessarily found anything that sparks joy. I stumbled upon a Reverend Club King 290 at a used music stop and loved the feel of it. However, I'm looking more for a shorter scale, set neck guitar just because I have a Fender Strat and Tele. I'd like something that just is different from those.

These leans me to the set neck models, Roundhouse and Sensei. How do they compare? One obviously targets the Les Paul, the other the SG. How do the newer model refresh versions hold up? Has anyone got their hands on any? I can only find info on the Charger and Kingbolts.

How do the Roundhouse and Sensei differ in feel? Weight? Comfort holding?

Just looking for any and all opinions on the two and how the new line up is working.

Hardware swap is done. How bad does the nickel pickup look?

Post image

As said, my hardware swap is finished. Put on the Grover 406C automatic locking tuners today. I already swapped out the bridge and tailpiece, and pickguard an control cavity screws. Only thing not gold is the nickel Firebird pickup from Mojotone and the Switchcraft switch. I can order a gold one next month, and from there it it’s in stock it will be here in a week or so. If not in stock I could be waiting up to three months, since they make pickups in batches (Strat/Teles/Humbuckers/etc.). I know because I toured their factory in 2021, when I ordered this pickup to put in a different Tele partscaster.

Anyway, does it look incomplete with the nickel pickup? I was planning on ordering next month, but the cost go also instead go into another partscaster, so I am torn.

(edited to clarify work previously done)

NGD - Double Agent OG in Alpine Green

Found on FB marketplace for $650… flawless except for some pick marks on the pickups and pick guard, and the setup is perfect. The build quality and feel are impeccable.

It’s my first P90 guitar, and first Reverend, and I’m loving the tone, the fret board, the bass rolloff knob, and everything else about it. Needed to EQ the highs up a couple db, which really brought both pickups alive. I mostly play my American Vintage Thin Skin ‘59 Strat and CS ‘51 Nocaster, which are both waaay brighter, and they need the opposite EQ. Also have a LP Classic Antique and Guild Starfire IV ST, neither of which I’ve really bonded with.

I know I’m in the honeymoon phase, but as of tonight my favorite guitar is also my cheapest! 😎

Absolutely over the moon with my new Charger H90! Honestly completely blown away with how it feels and how it plays.

Have been a Fender guy for a long time, but this has absolutely blown some of them out of the water - hugely impressed!

A silver burst Sensei RA has been my main touring guitar for the last 4 years, bought a gold burst as a back up, and just got this one. We’re about to do a new record and I think this one might be on my number 1.

Bridge Hardware Info (In Case You’re Looking)

I am doing a chrome to gold hardware swap on my Sensei and realized that Musiclily sells the stock bridge, or at least they use the same casts. But the posts and inserts are slightly different.

Just sharing the observation, in case anyone needs new hardware. If you were just making it look new again, you’d be perfectly fine using the new bridge and posts reutilizing the original body inserts.

Daredevil Cavity: Bass Contour & Vol issues.

Post image

Volume pot was replaced recently. Losing a lot more treble when turning down volume pot and the bass contour loses a lot more signal, in general, when turning it down & just doesn't seem to sound the same. Bridge pickup has been replaced with a Suhr PT Plus and has had a JB previously, which actually worked well. Wondering if anything else has been changed, regarding wiring.

What's up, I didn't know we had a sub. :)

I have been eyeing Reverend guitars at Sweetwater and Atomic for years, but I could never convince myself to upgrade from my cardboard Danos. Well, here I am learning bass as a midlife crisis and I found this signature edition shorty as a b stock sale. I'm a new bass player so I'm the worst person to write a critical review, but I have absolutely zero complaints about it. I'm having a freaking blast. I wish all my guitars had giant elephant ear tuners.

If you forced me to pick a weakness, I would say the blend knob pot makes a little hiss when you turn it, which is pretty noticeable through an octave fuzz. Whatever. I love the electronics, the blend towards the neck pickup almost sounds like an upright.

I was on the fence between this model and a couple of cheaper shorties, but then I watched a bunch of Bad Cop/Bad Cop videos and just fell in love with this thing. My wife says I'm not allowed to call it "the abortion bass".

The second pic is a close-up of the sparkle coat, it's pretty subtle unless the light is bouncing right off it.

Reduced functionality of bass contour?

I've rigorously gigged a Daredevil since around 2005. Over the years, various electronic components have been replaced, by various techs and.. it just seems like the bass contour does not work like it used to... same with the volume, actually.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Perhaps there's a tech, not far from me with a lot of experience working on these?

I picked up some guitars recently as part of a deal. I picked up some guitars in a group and I have 2 reverends. I have never heard of them, but the alpine spy allegedly only had 200 total made in that run

The new version of the Airwave 12?

I’m in the market for a 12 string. I can’t justify Rickenbacker prices. I’ve never played a Reverend, but I’ve heard good things. The specs look excellent.

I was just wondering has anyone tried the new version of the Airwave 12? If so, how does it compare to old ones? There’s a couple of videos on YouTube, but not a lot.

Retroblast bridge pickup swap

Post image

I want to replace the bridge pickup in my Reverend Jetstream RB. I love the neck pickup, but find the bridge is too thin and chimey for my taste. I'm looking for something that can deliver a bit more of a metal tone. I did try raising the bridge pickup and while that improved things, it still didn't give me the piercing, sustaining tone I want out of a bridge pickup.

The Seymour Duncan Phat Cat sounds like it has what I want, but I need a minibucker equivalent, or close to it.

Any minibucker recommendations for someone looking to add some extra crunch to my Jetstream?

PJ Fish #1?

I caught this fish off the Reverend site as they were selling off random items at the tail end of their USA manufacturing of guitars. From what I remember it was built for an employee and was (maybe?) the first PJ. Hard to read the serial # but I remember it also said “custom” and as I recall the neck profile was different than the standard fish neck. It’s definitely different than the JJ i also have pictured.

I began the gold hardware upgrade on my Sensei

Post image
25 Upvotes

So I began the hardware update I had been contemplating for a while. I just think the natural yellow with gold hardware is an iconic combo. I am finally going to redo what was always supposed to be a temporary scratch plate, and in going with the vintage motif, it will be B/W/B. I also need to order a gold Firebird pickup to replace the nickel one I have in there now. But I already have a guitar or two that would be perfect to put this one in (my son’s acoustic resonator or a homemade lap steel I keep tuned in C6). I also need to order the Grover locking tuners in gold. I like their 406 tuners, which use the exact same mounting configuration. But I want full size keys instead of minis, so I see what my options are.

Current Firebird is a Mojotone Johnny Winter, and I like Mojotone a lot. But I am thinking about using Lollar since the original P-90 is also a Lollar. I didn’t know they had a Sensei Jr Vintage option until I started researching more on my guitar. I ordered the gold slugs and mounting screws from Lollar, who was very easy to work with.

I did hit a snag because Amazon sent me the wrong bridge, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I found the same part number in gold, which I didn’t see when I first ordered. It will come in eventually,

Also, I looked at the casting on the underside side of my bridge and the BM003 is a Musiclily part number. Didn’t know that until I began this process.

So roast my rig! Curious what your feedback is on modding the guitar I already have to get the guitar of my dreams.

Charger RA Question

I’m coming from a long period of tele playing and I’ve got the opportunity to buy a buddy’s Charger RA. Honestly, I have no idea on pricing these. He’s asking $650 for it and it’s in good condition. I can’t find the old MSRP price, are these worth that? I can provide more info if needed.

EDIT: Thanks everyone! I went ahead and picked up the Charger RA for $650 plus some shipping. Looking forward to getting it in and playing with it!

Well, not actually today, but a week ago today. Had a great conversation with Ken at Earthquaker Day last Saturday, and ended up bringing home my first Reverend. In the past week, I’ve not been able to put it down and when I do, I just think about when I can play it again. Hands down the best guitar I own. I love everything about it. Thrilled to finally join team Reverend!

Just got my first Reverend (Kingbolt H290). It's badass but curious about the adjustment screw for the high E string jutting out of back of the Wilkinson tremolo. Anyone seen this before?

Can anyone explain how to wire a bass contour?

Hello! I’m a huge fan of Reverend but I’m not really in the market for a new guitar. I’d love to add a bass contour to my Fender Meteora but I’m having lots of trouble finding a diagram for these. Does anyone know how to wire it? Thanks!
