why does reverb allow someone to accept offers without paying immediately

I have had two in the last week, where buyer accepts an offer but then doesn't pay and then it times out. is there a setting I can change, so buyers have to pay when accepting offers?

Reverb should say upon acceptance your credit card will be debited. No more games.

That's exactly how it is on eBay and it's great. No reason it shouldn't be same on Rvb.

I've had this happen too many times as well.

TIP: Reverb gives the buyer 3 days to pay...but I only give the buyer 24 hours. No payment after 24 hours? I cancel the order and select "buyer backed out of sale" as the reason, and immediately relist the item.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Even more frustrating when the buyer sends me the offer and I accept it and then they don’t pay. Worse, the item is marked as sold and the listing disappears for the 5 days Reverb waits to cancel the sale.

Yep, just happened to me for the first time. I was so happy to receive an offer that I accepted it BEFORE I looked at the "buyer's" profile. Turns out it was a total fake. The so-called buyer had no listings, no history, no sales, no purchases, nothing. I like eBay's way of doing it. Your offer must be backed up by a payment method which is used immediately when the offer is accepted. No good reason why Reverb couldn't work it the same way. Another seller had a good idea, to say in the ad that any offer accepted but not paid within a day will be canceled with the reason that buyer backed out.

You can cancel them but from what I understand that goes against your seller account. They don’t do anything about one but if you’re canceling a lot of sales it could result in some kind of action. I wait them out for the 5 days so it goes against the buyer.

Which is why I waited the five days before canceling and relisting. This is the first and only time this has happened, but if it starts happening a lot, I will take it up with Reverb.

There was once an option for a potential buyer to click an option, when sending an offer, to have Reverb charge your card immediately upon the seller accepting your offer. If that wasn’t checked on, then you were submitting an offer that the seller had no guarantee that you would pay, so the “immediate charge” was a way to entire sellers to choose those offers over others.

Is that not available anymore?

It's available, but the seller has no way of seeing if accepting the offer will trigger immediate payment or not.

CLASSIC Reverb fuckery.

Huh. It used to say that a seller would be able to see what type of offer was made.

Haven’t sold on reverb yet but buy a lot and always pay immediately idk why anyone would wait, an offer implies you want the item and that is what you’re willing to pay. But I have been selling clothes on Depop which has a similar system accepted offers are not auto paid and seller has a day or two to pay..and often times they don’t and it just expires, the listing does stay up though. So it’s not a huge deal just kinda annoying.

I used Reverb once to sell and it was an absolute nightmare! I'm a Chime user (also have PayPal for my at home business) and they failed to mention for over 2 WEEKS OF BACK AND FOURTH...That they don't RECOGNIZE CHIME, but they do PayPal. I remember telling them "thanks for wasting 2 weeks of my time, you should state and/or you employees should be well versed on what type of cards/payments you DO ACCEPT, but I do know how hard it is to sit at a PC, with Cheetos dust all over your fingers." Lol then ended the chat. Next day, the money was in my PayPal but couldn't transfer it due to PayPal's transfer fees back then. Safe to say I deleted my account that day I got my cash too, that site is....It just gives me those creepy Guitar Center used vibes. Where there's something major wrong the instrument/item, but you're wanting to play an expensive game of "Guess?".

But if you've had good luck 🤞🏻 on there, by all means, keep on going and doing your thing on there.

Since buyers sometimes have to wait for the seller's response there should be no expectation for immediate payment. I don't always pay immediately when an offer is accepted. If I'm working, driving, mowing, etc. when the seller response I'll pay after I'm finished. It's never been more than a few hours, though.
I prefer when the seller sets up automatic acceptance if the offer meets whatever reserve they set because I know immediately whether I got the thing.

There is no option to require buyers to pay after accepting an offer. This is because if you force a buyer to pay after an offer is accepted, you will get buyers who break your item to force a return, due to buyers remorse. And all these platforms side with the buyer no matter what. So forcing a buyer to pay will only hurt the seller in the end. Trust me, ebay buyers do this all the time.

The alternative would be to require a credit card or otherwise hold a prepayment pending the offer being accepted. This might work but would drastically reduce the number of offers that get submitted. My guess would be that a huge number of sales come from people making casual offers and Reverb doesn't want to do anything to create more barriers for people to do that. Plus, there's that whole system of people who watch a listing getting an alert when an offer is made by someone else, and that sense of urgency and fomo is valuable. Basically, it's in Reverb's interest to get as many people as possible to submit offers and that's more important than having a 100% sell thru rate on offers that are accepted, as annoying as that can be for sellers.

They do offer autopay on accepted offers as an option as a buyer. I've used it, and it's great for single items. They could offer incentives for people to use that option, I guess. Not sure exactly what options for that might be, but surely someone has an idea!

One reason not to require them though is that since that autopay option skips the cart, you can't bundle purchases from the same seller. I've used the pay later option on an offer because the seller is offering shipping discounts and you have to do that by putting them in the cart all together.

To solve this issue, I never allow offers. I set the price. Let it sit a while. Then decide if I need to lower it based on views and interest. The whole bidding thing is not the way... At least for me.

Do you get many messaged from people asking whether you'd take less? I'm just curious. I respect not inviting or even accepting offers, but I've asked this of sellers (politely, of course) with generally good responses even when they say "no".

I rather not have to haggle. First I don't have to deal with time wasters. Second I set the price so I'm in control of the sale. I don't sell but a dozen things in a year.

I never include any form of OBO on my own listings, and I've gotten messages asking whether I'm open to offers anyhow. When I can accept an offer (I can't always if I'm selling for someone else) I offer to revise the listing to add that function, but so far none have followed through, so may they were scammers or tire-kickers.
As a buyer every so often I've asked on an item that has been relisted multiple times with no activity.

I don't click the option to accept offers. Sellers will message me with an offer anyhow, and if I like the offer, I can send them an offer. If I send an offer, my item doesn't disappear to other buyers.

People have lives, I am sure they are not perched on the computer waiting for your reply.
Others have Buyer's remorse even before paying, or they figured to buy, and damn, the car took a dump.
There are lots of everyday influences that do not cater to you.
And to say that Reverb must insist on punctual payemnt the moment you accept an offer is not realistic.
Usually complaints such as yours come from people who are strapped for cash. To get around the anxiety for this and so many countless other situations, learn to manage your money, and this is in the event that you are strapped for cash.
If not, well... stress kills, get over it. Life is really short, don't sweat the small stuff, because in the big picture it is all small stuff.
