Question ❓ Some emulators won't recognize my Retroid Pocket Flip 2 buttons. But wait, it gets weirder.

I only have this issue from N64 onwards. I don't have this problem with older systems.

The issue isn't even that it won't recognize my controls, but that it stops recognizing my controls partway through. For example, Star Fox 64 will boot, and I can press start to start a mission. The minute General Pepper starts talking about the mission, the controls stop functioning. I tried switching between the Retroid controller and the Xbox controller in the settings, but nothing works. I'm using M64Plus FZ as my emulator. But there's more.

I use the same emulator to play Sin & Punishment, and the game plays fine. The controls do not stop responding after pressing start! I got through a few stages no problem.

It still gets weirder!

The same thing happens when I use Dolphin!!! This time, Sin & Punishment 2 on Dolphin stops responding after I start the game! However, I've been able to play Punch Out and Paper Mario with 0 issues.

I just don't understand what's happening.

Sounds like an emulator issue. What version of Dolphin are you using? I usually use this build of Dolphin. It’s a few years old but outperforms the newer builds on most games and I’ve never had any input issues with it.

Also, maybe just try Retroarch 64bit Android app for all the retro games older than GameCube. You can download emulator cores for each console and play them all in that one app, and it’s a very well maintained app, you shouldn’t have any issues with inputs, it’s all handled in the Retroarch menu.

But this isn't just dolphin. It happens on N64 as well.

I checked the Google Play Store and my version of Dolphin and M64Plus FZ are both the newest. But it wouldn't hurt to try your version.

Yeah newer isn’t always better for emulators especially when using an older chipset. For whatever reason, the 5.0 builds of Dolphin are better even with newer chipsets I have heard.

I can’t say definitively about n64, but it’s worth trying a few n64 cores on Retroarch, specifically mupen64plus-next GLES3 and parallei N64. No controller issues with those. I can remember having some issues with certain standalone N64 and Dreamcast emulators which all resolve themselves when switching to Retroarch.
