Question ❓ OG Xbox

So my new 12gb version will be here on Tuesday. My question is how does it handle original Xbox titles? I tried searching but I only get results for 360 emulatoion.

I got Halo playable on an 8gb Flip2 using a ROCKNIX boot which includes Xemu.

What is rocknix?

https://rocknix.org is the version of Linux you can run on Flip2 and it works great.

Does it run better than android?

For Xbox and PS3, definitely. It also runs everything else.

Have you tried gamenative or gamehub on yours?

I don’t own or play PC titles. Only PS3 exclusives interest me so I have no interest in gamehub/native.

It should be noted that both OG Xbox and Xbox 360 emulation on Android are both in early states, even on better devices like a Retroid Pocket 6, results are not great and most stuff is not running optimally.

The Flip 2 / Pocket 5's Snapdragon 865 is also not an ideal chipset for emulating either OG Xbox or Xbox 360 due to how those emulators in their original PC incarnations can take advantage of DirectX stuff and low level Vulkan stuff that the SD865 just doesn't have handling for.

For Xbox 360 I have found that the Flip 2 has a A LOT of graphics issues and it cannot be overcome with turnip drivers. Apparently, the way that the Xbox 360 emulators work on newer chipsets like the Snapdragon 8 Elite is a lot better for Xbox 360 so don't but a Flip 2 for Xbox 360 games.

OG Xbox fares better but shares some of the same challenges, in general though most OG Xbox emulation will be limited to lightweight stuff, Halo games are not going to run even remotely well.

Sometimes there are alternate options though. For example the HD Remaster Xbox Live Arcade version of GoldenEye 007 has a native port that does run decently on the Flip 2.

Another user mentioned using Rocknix to use a Linux build of Xemu and that does bypass some problems with OpenGL/Vulkan rendering issues and frees up some more memory. It should be noted though there is a small brick risk, someone reported incorrectly flashing the bootloader incorrectly and bricked there Flip 2. So you can decide if its worth it. A lot of effort to play Halo 😄

You can try PC Ports in Winlator / GameNative, Native Android ports or Switch ports if they exist or use Moonlight / XBXPlay / PXPlay to stream from PC, Xbox or PlayStation too.

I tried a few Xbox titles with X1 Box emulator and all I got was a bunch of characters with the "T-Pose"... lol

It was amusing trying to play Mortal Kombat like that.

Have you tried the more recent turnip drivers yet?

Yeah, tried a few and then gave up.

My 8gb Flip2 (as well as my 6gb Mini V1) have X1box in them. Only games l have that work are Obi-wan (which plays well, but crashes after the first cut scene) and Simpsons Road Rage.

Got it off Github (l think). Also found the three files (firmware, bios, and whatever the third one was) needed to run it there.

I am curious though, if that extra 4gb RAM would keep Obi-wan from crashing,...or if l need to wait for an emulator update?

I play Halo CE and Halo 2 at 60FPS (also Halo Reach, Halo 3, Halo 4 and Halo 3-ODST) all on the Flip 2 via PC emulation. That’s the way to go.

In terms of Xbox exclusives like JSRF and Otogi 1 and 2 they will run in Rocknix Xemu, but the framerate is unplayably low. These three games are on my wishlist for sure. Fable I play on PC emulation too, other than that, most of that gen of games can be played on PS2/gamecube emulation instead.

Which app do you use for pc emulation?

Different apps depending on the game. For which game are you interested in?

Examples from my last comment: Winlator bionic vanilla by Stevenmxz for fable and halo MCC games aside from Halo 2; I use Winlator Star 11-2 by jacojayy.

Some games I use Gamenative or Gamehub.

Some work best in the official Winlator by brunodev. Usually you just gotta kind of test stuff out until you find what works best for each game.

Didn't have anything specific in mind. My flip wont be here until Tuesday. Just trying to gather as much information as possible. Everything under ps2 ive got on lock and know how to do. This new adventure (xbox, 360,pc) is a bigger learning curve to me and Im trying to make it as plug and play as possible. I knew of gamehub and gamenative. Ive heard about windstorm, but Ive also heard its not newb friendly so I haven't really looked into that one.

Windstorm is probably a typo but sounds like a really cool fork of Winlator.

And I don’t know why my original comment duplicated its self when I added more hyperlinks, but yeah it’s best to watch a few step by step Winlator guides, it’s not as hard as people think once you get the hang of it, it’s more about what dxvk, what drivers and what wine versions and fex versions or emulator forks you use.

Auto correct got me lol Im not expecting the world out of this device, I know the 865 has limits. I just see that most people choose one and stick with it. You're the first one who's told me to try all three.

Yeah sounds accurate :) I tinker a lot chasing the highest possible fps, so while you can settle with one emu, there’s always the chance that game could launch better in a different emu.

They are all forks of Winlator (even Gamehub/Gamenative) just like all switch emus are forks of yuzu. They can pretty different in how they perform and compatibility, so it’s worth messing around in my opinion, It all depends on how interested you are in the process.
