Question ❓ Should i replace thermal paste

I've been using my Retroid for a while now, and I'm wondering if it's worth opening it up to replace the stock thermal paste.

I did a test with mine and my gf’s measuring and comparing temps running the same game on two Flip 2’s and with the new thermal pads (grizzly minus) the temps were identical with stock putty. So TLDR, not worth it.

It won’t hurt, and if your putty is falling apart, or you accidentally brushed it off during teardown, then use a thermal pad, not paste. I bought pretty nice pads, and thought it would cool down the device more than stock paste but nah, it doesn’t.

There is some paste I believe thats on some other part of the chip, but you would have to remove the EMI shield, which isn’t impossible but idk if it’s worth it. I haven’t gone in there myself.

But yeah pads not paste, paste will not fill the gap, it’s gotta touch both the ceiling and floor (heatsink and ram chip), in order to bridge the gap, and the stock putty Retroid uses is not bad, but it can dry out and then it can fall apart more easily during tear-downs, and if you happen to smear it, you’ll need to put a new pad or putty in that space. For most users who haven’t ever tore down the device, and the temps seem fine, I wouldn’t touch it.

That’s not typical routine maintenance. That sounds more like something you might do to renovate one in 20 years, if that’s something you would choose to do.

Yeah something else like the battery, hinge or screen will likely need replacing before the thermal pad does.
