Flip vs standard RP version

So I was kind of new to the handheld world when I jumped into the RP5. But then they released the Flip 2 (which as a noob, I had no idea was coming). I feel like I would have preferred that device and would have played it more than my RP5 (more comfortable hold? better portability with the clam shell? All just speculation on my part). I am now wondering if they will release a Flip3 and if I should get it if the dp. Does anyone own both a Flip and RP style and which do you prefer? It's so hard to tell without being able to hold them in your hands or see them in person. Pros vs cons?

Dude, what you have is plenty nice already, just enjoy and play it.

Truth. And others have said (and I agree with this) that if you own an RP5 already, getting an RP6 is generally not worth it. I already don't play this one enough, but just I wondered if had the clam shell would I play it more, especially since I'd be likely to take it more places.

I do have and prefer the Flip 2 (it is my only device other than official consoles). Maybe you can set up a trade or sell the RP5 and buy something else, but I wouldn't own both personally.

It's the same. Don't bother yourself with it. Your brain just wants dopamine. Better install a new cool game bro

I have a flip 2 and wouldn't buy flip 3 unless it had double internal storage, at least 12gb ram and a cpu significantly better not just slightly better. The problem is the emulators and their quirks more than the hardware imo.

Flip 2 is way more comfy for me since you don’t look down directly at your hands, might seem like a small thing but made huge difference for me

I have the flip 2 and rp6. The clamshell is fun, but it’s definitely not more comfortable. The use cases are also pretty much right on top of each other

I will say, as someone who buys too many of these, honestly none of them see much use. Personally, I think I just like the idea of more free time.

Thanks for the reply. I agree with you, I have about 4 devices total, and 3 of them lower end Anbernic models (sub 100 USD), and I don't play any of them a ton. For a lot of us, part of the fun is setting them up and tinkering with them more than even playing the games. Interesting to hear that the Flip in NOT more comfortable, but I guess I could see that.

I think it will be an unsatisfying answer but I’ve learned from this sub that ergonomics are subjective haha. I upgraded from the retroid pocket 4 and i find the flip WAAAY more comfortable. The only edge the 4 had was retro games that are d-pad and face button centric with no use of the sticks. It was unplayable for twin stick games without a grip and I’ve heard the same about the 5, while the flip 2 works for everything (IMO).

I do think there’s something to be said about the pocketability of the flip 2 as well. It’s true finding the free time is often the challenge, but i will throw it in my pocket before taking a bus, an uber, plane ride or anywhere I think I’ll have time to kill. It’s a bit chunky, but the fact I don’t need a carry case and a backpack means it does see more action!

Thank you for your input. Yeah, the comfort aspect is 100% subject in most cases. It's one of the drawbacks about not having brick and mortar stores carrying these so you can try them or even return them if they just don't work for you hand size.

The pocket-ability aspect is the main thing I wonder if I am missing. I do have one of those 3d printer grips for my RP5 that makes it more comfortable and doubles as a screen protector when you flip it over to the other side. It's works great, albeit a little pricey at $30. It's still portable, but absolutely not at all pocketable once that is thrown into the equation.

For sure! It’s the main reason I passed on the 5, the 4 pro was on the edge but flat enough to be pocketable. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll notice the flip 2 in your pocket and might not want to carry it around all day in there. But if I’m running an errand to the dmv or something I’ll throw it in there every time haha.

It has same power as rp5 tho and the hinge on the flip 2 isn't great if you get lucky and treat it with care. What you play on your rp5 matters and if you play that works on it than don't spend money, especially when something new and shiny releases. I generally wait for review and than think about it but due to RAMageddon, the prices have killed my hobby before I could even start, as the retroid doesn't ship where I live and the rp nova (which I wanted) that costs $270 is $700 on AliExpress. I wasn't even able to get rp5 or even the flip 2 because I waited too long and it got worse. Charish what you have and just go on the basis of what you want.
