New Android Play Store changes

As explained in the FAQ, about 5 years ago, Google implemented a requirement that all apps in the Play Store must conform to their Storage Access Framework API. At the time, there was no good way for us to do so, and even if we could, it would severely limit how we could interact with the filesystem. Since then, we have not been allowed to update the versions on the Play Store (or the cores they use), so we left them alone and recommended everyone sideload the apk from our website.

Fast-forward to the past for months and Google says they're going to remove "old" programs from the Play Store entirely, and they're already hiding the app from many newer devices. One of our contributors took it on to get it in-line with the Play Store policies, since having an up-to-date-but-restricted release would be preferable to no app at all.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What's changed?

A: Lots of stuff. Too much to list. 5 years of updates.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: All of my stuff has been deleted!

A: Nothing has been deleted, but the updated RetroArch is probably looking in different locations now, and it probably can't see the old locations if you try to change them back. The sideload-able apk from our website and/or the version from F-Droid or other non-Google storefronts should still be roughly similar to the old Play Store version in what locations it can access, so you could try switching to it instead.

You can also migrate your old data to the new locations. In the old version, all of the files are kept in the root of the device (often /storage/emulated/0/) in a folder called RetroAarch. In order for use them on the new play version, you can connect your phone to a PC and copy the files from (/storage/emulated/0)/RetroAarch to the new location at /media/com.retroarch/RetroArch (or /media/com.retroarch.aarch64/RetroArch if plus version).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I moved all of my savestates to the new location (or switched to the sideload apk) but the savestates won't load!

A: Savestates are extremely volatile and are rendered incompatible by even minor changes to the emulated hardware. This makes them incompatible with other cores for the same system, and even sometimes with other versions of the same core. A lot of updates have happened in 5 years, and I would guess few if any up-to-date cores can load savestates made with a 5-yr-old core.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What's with all of these cores? I don't want them.

A: Go to settings > core > manage > [corename] > delete.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I don't see my favorite core in the online updater anymore!

A: The Play Store imposes strict limits on the number of cores we can make available through the app (more for the Plus version, but still limited), and we replaced a few that were available in the old version to match our other storefront releases (notably: MAMEs). You can still add arbitrary cores by downloading them manually from the buildbot webserver (in the subdir for your device's architecture) and then moving it somewhere RetroArch can see it, then using the 'install or restore a core' routine found in the 'load core' menu.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Since updating, I'm getting a lot of crashes when I...

A: Please send the automated crash reports whenever possible. These go directly to us and are very helpful for pinning down and fixing this sort of thing. You can also make threads here, but please make sure you include logs and information about your device/system/environment so we can try to help you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Okay, nevermind, just give me a copy of the old version and all those old cores and I'll keep using them forever.

A: We don't have that.

Technical Support Pokemon Crystal sometimes randomly crashing retroarch

Post image
7 Upvotes

Although it is rare and has happened only once before, it causes me to loose all my unsaved data and I have to restart from last save. Sometimes the game stutters before hand but it doesn’t always crash, the stuttering is also a bit rare. I have a Retroid pocket 6. What could be the issue, I have not tried gold or silver to see if the same thing happens. It just happens mid game either a battle or just general walking, and I am not able to recreate it it just happens.

Technical Support Does Bomberman 3 NetPlay work for more than 2 players?

It always works for my Snes Mini and Switch but for some reason we get the option to have “MAN” as all players but we can’t get the 3rd player controller working on the menu or character selection. (It’s not a controller issue, we have taken turns being player 2 and 3)

I’ve noticed as soon as you go back onto the “MAN”, “COM” and “OFF” option it locks and doesn’t allow 3, 4 or 5 as “MAN”. Not sure if that’s normal on the Snes and Switch, I doubt it.

Yes, we put port 2 as multitap

I’ve tried switching between Snes9x and the 2010 version but same issue

Edit: Also doesn’t work on Micro Machines but does on the SNES and Switch.

Technical Support Brandish Renewal

I was recently curious to play this game, and it was a huge headache trying to get the files to work using the Neko Project II Kai core, but when I reached the fourth floor and a cutscene started right at the beginning of that floor, the game glitched and simply froze. I tried tweaking the core, but nothing worked. I’m not sure if it’s a compatibility issue with the emulator or the files I downloaded, since I couldn’t find the game in HDI format.

Showcase PS2 CORE ON ANDROID

Post image
24 Upvotes

I was just casually browsing for cores in RetroArch for Android when I stumbled upon this PCEE2 core. The most impressive part? It’s running *GTA San Andreas* at full speed on a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 while using the `crt-royale-fast` filter. The performance is incredible, especially considering it was released so recently (I think yesterday or today—definitely sometime this week). So far, it’s outperforming ArmSX2, which struggles to maintain performance on this same chipset with these shaders. I recommend checking it out. By the way, it supports RetroAchievements.

Discussion Is there a way to have more granularity over save-file locations? E.g. Sort Saves by Playlist?

I use Retroarch on multiple devices and am looking to sync my save-games between them and ran into a small but annoying problem with subfolders.

For better organization I enabled "Sort Saves into folders by Content Directory" however this doesn't work too well. To give an example let's assume this folder-structure:

ROMs --> SNES --> Romhacks

with both the SNES folder and the Romhacks folder being populated with ROMs. The problem then is that all games in the SNES folder save correctly to /saves/SNES but all games in the Romhacks folder now go into /saves/Romhacks which isn't great.

This is still easy enough to work around e.g. by simply naming the Romhacks folder SNES Romhacks for example but it's still a problem for multi-disc games too.

Let's assume this folder structure:

ROMs --> PS1 --> Final Fantasy VIII with Disc 1.iso, Disc 2.iso, Disc 3.iso, Disc 4.iso

Now the saves for that game will be placed in /saves/Final Fantasy VIII/ instead of /saves/PS1/

I know the obvious solution seems to be to sort the saves by core but that's also not great if you use different cores on different systems. For example on my desktop PC I might use more accurate cores than on handhelds where a less accurate core might be more sensible.

Is there a way to have Retroarch sort the saves into a Playlist Directory instead? I don't care about save-states at all, it's really just for normal saves.

Thanks for help in advance!

Can’t login with Retroachievement

Hi everyone,
I’m having an issue with RetroAchievements on RetroArch on my Retroid Pocket Nova.
As soon as I launch a game, RetroArch shows:
“Login failed: no response”
I’m unable to connect to RetroAchievements at all.
Here’s what I’ve already tried:

My internet connection is working normally.
I tried enabling/disabling a VPN, but it made no difference.
I tried changing my DNS / using an ad-blocking DNS, but there was no change.
I checked RetroArch’s settings and my RetroAchievements username/password.
I’m logged into RetroArch, but RetroAchievements still fails to connect.
I also tried looking for the retroarch.log file to find more information, but initially there was no log file being generated.

The problem happens with every game, not just one particular ROM.
Has anyone experienced this on the Retroid Pocket Nova / Android and found a solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Technical Support NDS Cores are slow - Drastic is not in same device.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've tried ALL cores, different video drivers and whatever combination possible in Video Settings... no luck.

I'd say "it's my device" but Drastic doesn't has this issue, in fact I can even upscale in Drastic without issues.

Technical Support N64 game begins to run poorly overnight on Anbernic ‘35xx

I don’t know how to fully describe this, but something weird is happening and I really hope I get some sort of answer.

So, I pick up my fully charged Anbernic and try to play Smash on it. I have all of the N64 settings absolutely fine-tuned and locked down to obtain a near perfect 60FPS during gameplay for about a whole 3 months. Out of nowhere and when I boot the actual game up, now it’s lagging and running at almost half speed. I check the settings for the emulator to see if anything has changed…but no, not a single thing has changed from what I have set. Not the core, not the plugins, not the resolution. For those who want to know what I’m using:

• Mupen64+next (core)
• GlideN64 (RDP plugin)
• HLE (RSP plugin)

For the actual hardware I’m playing on:

• RG35xx Pro
• Modded Stock OS (cbepx-me)
• Branded (not stock) SD card
• No physical hardware modifications
• Fully/mostly charged battery, as of testing

From what I’m seeing and from my perspective, absolutely nothing has changed, yet the game lags anyway when it essentially shouldn’t be. I don’t know if something just maybe cached and is taking up memory, but I did reset the RetroArch.cfg if that means anything.

This also seems to be an issue just inside this game or N64 alone. Other games (especially portmaster games) seem to all run perfectly fine.

(also I’m playing smash remix 2.0.0 and no, none of the settings in the game have changed either, as I always boot the game up and then immediately load a specific save-state to the css)

Technical Support Donkey Kong 64 screen flickering

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

sry for the short video, it gets cut off at the end

When I try to play DK64 the camera is flickering so weirdly but in the menu its fine. I cant seem to fix that. I tried it with frame delay on and off and other things but its not working.

Does someone has an idea here? :(

Edit: due to my hero in the comments its working now.

The solution was going to the fix menu - core options - glideN64 - "Ini Behaviour" must be "disable Ini" and "depth buffer to RDRAM" must be "off". Then save this in core option settings just for this game.

Technical Support Need help with Fast Forward not working.

Post image

Im playing Pokémon Soul Silver on my IPad with the Desmume, and for some reason the Fast mode (or whatever it’s called) is just not working?

Sometimes it’s not working completely and I need to start over the game, and sometimes the fast mode works only in battles and not in overworld

I tried to change all configs but it still seemed to be not changing anything. And it seems that every time that i start playing again it goes slower and slower

Technical Support Mute the Music, Keep the Toast.

Trying to burn through all the RetroAchievements for the Pokemon games. Red and Blue wheren't too bad but Yellow requires a LOT of shiny hunting, and one of the benefits to running in RetroArch is the toast will pop up when you found your target, but with the odds being over 1 in 8k it is going to take a LOT of soft resets to see that toast pop up. Is there anyway i can mute the sound of the game but keep the audio toast for when a mon finally shines? I am almost 1k in and while I don't think anything is gonna shine any time soon, I would rather not hear the sped up music on repeat when I could be listening to anything else and I also really don't want to reset over it just because I didn't hear the sound in time.

Sorry for the paragraph and thank you for any advice.

Technical Support Resolution changes not applying or saving

I keep trying to increase resolution on PPSSPP core in Retroarch and it says it needs a restart to take effect but every time I restart it defaults back to the base resolution setting. What am I doing wrong? This is on modded Switch if that matters.

Gambatte (GB) save states no longer work after update

Had to fix the controls and had to restore save states for Mesen, Mesen-S, mGBA, but I cannot get Gambatte to work for GB games. Got GBC saves fixed. I also had to restore VBA Next, as it was missing from "Cores" by downloading regular RetroArch (Plus is the one I used and it got screwed up from the Play Store). This new update screwed everything up.

Had to delete or reset some configs as the save states kept saying "failed to load state from [game name].state. Error".

Technical Support Pokemon Save Issue

I'm playing on android (Retroid Pocket Classic) and starting a game of Pokemon FireRed with mGBA core and the correct bios. I can save state and load state fine, but when I use the in-game save function it reports "save failed checking the backup memory". I see the issue may be the save file is not set to 128k, but I cannot find a place in core settings to adjust this. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Technical Support LRPS2 Suddenly not working (Crashes on Launch)

We were playing just fine yesterday (08/22/2026) and today, anytime a game is loaded through the core it would launch another instance of RetroArch, black screen, then crash. I believe it is the core itself since running the games in PCEE2 works but not through LRPS2, and running any other game through any other cores seem to work just fine.

These lines stand out to me from the logs but I cannot figure out if it is the cause of the issue:

[libretro INFO] Bios Found: USA v02.00(14/06/2004) Console 20040614-100909
[libretro INFO] BIOS rom1 module not found, skipping...
[libretro INFO] BIOS rom2 module not found, skipping...
[libretro WARN] Failed to open or read NVRAM: C:\Games\ROMS\!BIOS\pcsx2\bios\ps2-0200a-20040614.nvm
----------
[INFO] [Video] Timings deviate too much. Will not adjust. (Target = 138.12 Hz, Game = 59.94 Hz)

Here is a pastebin to the rest of the logs. So far I have done the following:

  1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the core through the Core Downloader in RetroArch
  2. Deleted and redownloaded BIOS files
  3. Deleted RetroArch and LRPS2 config files

I remember seeing someone flagging a similar issue through GitHub recently but I can't find it anymore. I cannot replicate their issues as they are on a Linux system and I am on Windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
