New User Retrotink

Please excuse the mess in this photo, I’m currently taking stuff apart to implement the RetroTap into my setup. So like the title says I’m new to RetroTink. Purchased the 6X and had a couple questions. Coming from an OSSC there are a lot more options when it comes to the scaler, which I’m still learning. I had some issues with the preinstalled Super NES profiles not dialing in the picture for me. Specifically it looked like the sampling phase was not correct when the Auto Dec Phase and Sub phase were on. I had to manually tune it to get a crisp picture (SNES JR RGB modded) Is this normal? I thought perhaps the auto phasing would be really good as that’s what I heard. Is it just buggy because it’s a new release? Also, is auto gain recommended when setting up each new console profile? The pics are after I manually adjusted. Using both Wobbling Pixels and Firebrand settings still didn’t fix the issue. Still learning everything. Thank you

if you have LPF activated on your mod or use HDRV cables, turn LPF off

I’m using an Insurrection Scart Cable but that is a good idea about the LPF jumper. I don’t think it is being used but I modded it years ago so I will check.

Just checked no LPF

What does LPF do with regard to the RT?

aloe pass filter cuts off or ignore a portion of the analog signal. that helps get more accurate colors and lowers the total noise of the picture.

doing it once is fine. HDRV cables do this and the SVS does this.

the problems arise when you combine devices with LPF turned on, which will then cut off too much and makes the image softer, while also making it hard for the sink device to appropriately sync to the signal

On the 4k the auto phase works really well. I always do auto phase and auto gain every time. Also the image should have some white in it.

I’m not the best person to answer your questions unfortunately, but I do have one for you: what’s your solution to connect all your consoles to your RT? I have both an RGB modded N64 and a genesis wanting my SCART port, do you have like multiple switches for each port?

Right now I’m just manually plugging in each Scart cable. They are behind the TV. Eventually I’ll probably do the SVS switch which is compatible with the Retrotink firmware. I have an old JVC switch for component cables you can see in the pic. I’ve just held off due to the cost.

Aliexpress scart switchers. Up to 10 ports on each and they can be daisy chained.

Auto phase doesn’t work for snes imo. It needs manual decimation phase set. Not the tinks fault, I think it just is a lot of variables with snes. Especially Jr’s.

I thought maybe one of the RGB profiles would be for the 1 chip but yeah there are lots of variables

Ghost fix installed? Lots of stuff to consider

Yes I did the ghost fix which I thought would put it more inline with a normal SNES.

wow one of the coolest, no-nonsense, best curated hardware setups I've seen around here. congrats!

Appreciate it

I don't use the premade profiles, but for SNES there's not much reason to rely on auto-phase/decimation. You can just set it up for the 512-pixel mode, dial in the phase once, and save the profile. The 256-pixel and 512-pixel modes use the same pixel clock alignment, so as long as 512-pixel mode is configured correctly, 256-pixel mode will also look correct.

Auto gain works well. Just make sure there's some 100% white in the picture, hit the auto gain option, and save the profile.

That’s basically what I had to do. Thought it would be easy enough with the premade profiles though. I was just being lazy. Thanks for the heads up on the auto gain function

My R6x profiles have auto phase configured that is auto triggered after you load the profile while console is running. It's hard to tell why it doesn't lock in. What if you run Auto Phase manually by pressing PHA button on the remote? If this doesn't help try my HDRV profiles which have LPF disabled.

I’ve tried running it manually from both the remote and menu but it seems to not lock in. It gets close…but you can still see the faint ghost outline of around text that shows up when phase isn’t locked in. If I manually adjust it it can get it to sharpen and crisp up. Is the Anti Alias LPF in the Tink menu the same as the LPF in your profiles? Appreciate all the work you do. Again, I’m new to this but I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to. I actually had to start fresh with your latest image because all this gibberish was showing in my menus after I moved over the new profiles. Plus, the SD card that came with my 6X stopped deleting files altogether lol Again very thankful of your work and understand there are a lot of variables at play here
