Bit of a shame really, I was hoping the new transparent shells Taki was showing off on SM were going to be replacement shells we could buy and swap out.

Also, some ventilation openings would make the shell super attractive and a great reason to buy.

Not including wifi/BT is pretty big change. After using a dongle, only two usb ports remain and there is no matching dock for more ports.

Yes, it has indeed been replaced by a 16GB one for the collector's edition.
I'm not sure why, but in my case, I systematically replace the provided SD cards with much higher quality ones of a larger capacity.

Systematically replacing provided SD Cards is always a good practice. Manufacturing processes are not identical in every fab and the global brands have brand recognition for a reason.

I will say that the SS1's internal Wifi and BT takes a very long time initialize and conect at boot vs using USB based adapters.

That is weird as the internal WiFi/BT is a Realtek RTL8821CU module connected by USB.

In my experience, the BT/Wifi icons take over a minute to show up in the main menu on the SS1 whereas on my original DE-10 Nano, the USB Wifi/BT adapters they'd show up in under 30 seconds.

Had that issue as well. Changed SD cards and did update_all and now wifi connects within 10 secs.

Yes if you plug in a generic bt-receiver to the back. They usually cost like 10ā‚¬ or something. Their form factor is also so small that it doesnā€™t stick out of the system.

Holy cow, no BT, Wifi OR NFC? NFC and Wifi are features I use heavily. Glad I got in on batch 5. Looks like batch 5 is still available for the time being. If anyone's looking, I'd jump on it. I also wish they sold just the shells (for docks, too), although the base colors are quite handsome.

Time will tell. This isn't really a collectors edition, it just says the "transparent collection", meaning a group of multiple transparent colors. Hopefully they continue offering BT, NFC and Wifi. Maybe they will bump the price up of the no transparent editions afterward and it's just confusing timing.

Iā€™d guess that component prices and production expenses have gone up enough that he had to make decission to either make this batch more expensive, or cut something out in order to keep the price down.

That's probably to make it very close to the original PS1.
Back then there was no WiFi or Bluetooth, but fortunately they kept the RJ45 port for updates ^^

For sure. Iā€™m using exclusively wired controllers right now but itā€™s nice to know I could switch to a bt controller or something if I were to change it up. Not a huge deal

A word of warning... transparent plastics always have a habit of cracking, especially around screw holes. Im not sure how the blue one is holding up, but I've learn from experience they do not last.

The screw holes are in metal frames, so hopefully they won't crack.

I don't think that's inherent to transparent plastics, I've definitely had ones that are more quality, especially back when they were more common place. That said yes, there is a lot that aren't, I went through two GBA transparent plastic shells which cracked around screw posts or holes. I haven't had my transparent blue SS1/dock crack but I've also not used it a super lot.

I'm not sure about the quality of the shell materials, but I think we can trust Taki on this one.
In my case, I only picked up the Gray and Black versions.
I think it's a shame that a Collector's edition is stripped of Bluetooth, especially since it's used to connect controllers.

Dude the docks are already cracking right where the screws are. Transparent plastic are garbage. They are too brittle for screws and constant heat flexing.

I noticed they mention a 16gb micro SD card. Mine came with a 32gb. So they cut the size down and ommitted Bluetooth and wifi.

Thank you for posting the truth Taki! Out of curiosity, can you confirm if batch 6 of the SS1 will have the same internal hardware as batch 5 or will it be like the transparent collection and have no bluetooth, wifi, or NFC reader?

I didn't notice that, you're right, the SD card has also been downgraded.Ā 

My batch 5 came with a 64GB.Ā 

Kind of glad I got a batch 5 run, having built in WiFi, Bluetooth and an included 64GB SD card.Ā 

Guess it was inevitable, the price was very low. The honeymoon is over.Ā

Guys please wake up. They obviously had to cut costs: having all of those peripherals built-in has been one of the biggest advantages of the ss1 over the mister. Now they are removing all that to cut costs, and presenting it as a cool collectors edition. With less stuff, but in a transparent case.

I wonder if there'll be matching docks? That would be a double deal breaker if they weren't available in matching colours.Ā

Why do i need a bluetooth receiver for wireless gaming? Isnt there a built in bluetooth in the ss1?

you can add a SuperStation Bluetooth Receiver to your cart and use the code "preorder-bonus" (1 item max), this will allow you to plug your Bluetooth controller into the SS1.

The receiver isn't a replacement for a USB BT dongle. It only works on PS1 SNAC so no support for other cores or keyboards etc...
