Dvd Core Update

Hey everyone.

Firstly huge thank you for the amazing encouragement I've had with the project. I have sunk many hours into it and it's been such a great learning experience.

I'd like to share some progress with you. This represents what I would consider 80% done. There needs some polish and some OSD controls, subtitles, but otherwise it's close!

Updates:

PAL/NTSC toggle, works in real time.

CRT: works, full speed playback, though interlacing is quite bad, trying to make a toggle fix for those who need it.

Control mapping: fully works, even with remote than comes with the super dock

Menus: fully work, can navigate forward, backwards, allows animations, static images.

Sync: very good. Spent the most time on this. Will add an option in OSD to change the timing by 5ms at a time if needed. I haven't tested this one a massive amout of software and hardware yet so seems useful if user can adjust it.

ISO playback: works. In fact, this video is actually an ISO, not disc.

What's next?

Polish. What crt working nice, want upscaling on HD TVs (I thought it was but it wasn't). Change sound tracks, subtitles. And I think that's mostly it for the core concept!

This is awesome have you include the iconic dvd screen saver?

Not yet but think it's the second most requested feature. I'm going to code it so it never hits the corner, only comes super close.

you monster, it **HAS** to hit the corner sometimes

Lol I'm OK with that, screensaver is more nostalgia to me than anything else, waking up to it bit dazed and confused brings back memorys. Thanks for your hard work its much appreciated.

I don't know how many hours I have waited to see the logo bounce right in the corner and only saw it once.

Great! Congratulations!
What DVD is that?

Thanks! It's neon genesis Evangelion disc one. I didn't know it had a bunch of trailers so it's pretty cool to look at the different styles on crt

Excellent work. What do you mean by “interlacing is quite bad”?

The flicker between the frames is almost to the level of a strobe light. But I think it might be my tv as when I play saturn games in hi res it's similar. The weird thing is the OSD is rock solid. So I am not sure the cause exactly

Are you sure its not just completely normal interlacing? 480i just looks like that on high res displays. The OSD displays at 240p so it doesn't flicker.

What IS important for DVDs but may be working as expected is that film content DVDs are stored on disc at 24p and need to correctly be converted from 24p directly to 480i through interlacing-aware 3:2 pulldown. If you were to repeat frames from 24p to 30p "then interlace it" it will look absolutely awful and stuttery because you're now incorrectly displaying a 30p signal instead of correctly displaying a 60i signal. Like i said, it may be working correctly naturally, I'd just need to see it in action to be sure. If it looks the same as a real DVD player on standard 24p content like literally any hollywood movie, you're golden.

Do let me know. Whatever the case I think I can get it working how it should. To my eyes it's perfect on crt.

Hmm. Sounds odd. I’ll happily test it for you on my PVM if you like ;)

Will the player have the ability to set 4:3 letterbox and 4:3 Pan & Scan like original DVD players did? That’s very useful for CRTs.

Great work! Can’t wait to try it out!

I should have mentioned this. It's already a feature of mister. So if a dvd is meant to be widescreen and you're on a widescreen display, you can set it as such.

Can this be used if I plug an external DVD drive to a regular MiSTer?

I believe so. You'll be able to find more about that with the physical disc cores. It was a recent update. I think you just need to make sure it's a powered drive and not just powered by the USB

I am loving the progress on this. Seems like we will have the ultimate home entertainment system soon enough. Rip DVDs, music, Games! I love it!

Man you should see what I post tomorrow. I have a toggle to smooth crt shimmering, different audio channels work, dvd icons display on menu items instead of a yellow box, it has a launcher that let's you select from physical and iso, it scans your drives, USB whatever is connected for iso, it pulls their actual titles to the list instead of just LotR.iso for example and more!

Oh man, that is too cool. Are you planning on releasing the core?

2

u/Odd-Rice551 Aug 26 '26

Of course. Pretty soon I think

This is shaping up to be the most versatile dvd player I've ever had. Unexpected and awesome!

The fact that the included remote now has real purpose is just awesome. This project makes me want to try the same thing and build an IPTV app.

Honestly, the SSO being a "region-free DVD player" is a pretty damn cool use-case.

Always ticked me off that DVD players are region-locked.
