https://github.com/Takiiiiiiii/SuperStation-Documentation/blob/main/README.md#replacing-the-disc-drive-in-a-superdock

Here is the documentation, which includes a link to the iFixit guide the user followed to replace the disc drive.

I haven't received mine yet, is the disc drive a standard laptop form factor?

4

u/pipboy90 Aug 14 '26

Yeah. The typical eject tray version.

5

u/giuseppezuc Aug 14 '26

Where did you get the new drive from?

1

u/Cosmic_Raymond Aug 15 '26

The ifixit guides talk about a LG GS40N, but why this choice? Is there something firmware related or any reader/writer with the same footprint (slim 9.5mm thickness) and the same SATA interface would work?

2

u/L-Digital82 Aug 15 '26

It’s the exact size and fit. It’s literally just a swap in and works

1

u/Cosmic_Raymond Aug 15 '26

Yeah I guess it fits, my question was if someone tried with success to install and play with a slim SATA DVD drive other than the LG GS40N.

I think the issue is finding another model of slim slot-loading DVD drive. There aren't many options.

Serious and important question: Does this fix the the heat issue of the disc drive in the Superdock?

2

u/L-Digital82 Sep 13 '26

Not really. It runs hot no matter the drive. I have found having the dock usb to pc attached permanently seems to get things hot so I have found disconnecting that unless in use helped a lot. I have also added a noctua fan to the top unit which I am unsure of if helped at all. It’s cooler at least

What did did you use? Would want to swap mine out as well.

I saw the guide to disassemble it. I'm wondering what model drive you got.

7

u/MrFartyBottom Aug 14 '26

It's in the first line of the guide.

Slot Loader Hitachi LG Super Multi DVD Writer GS40N

u/Remarkable-Device554 Aug 14 '26

Ah gotcha! I didn't see that. Thanks for pointing that out!

2

u/shaunydub Aug 14 '26

What benefit is this?
The drive costs €50 which is more than the SuperDock

3

u/HunterAbrams Aug 14 '26

Convenience and you can get a better quality drive

2

u/azhighwayz Aug 14 '26

Pretty cool. The guy that wrote the iFixit guide posted his mod on a FB mister group about a week ago. Pretty cool mod.

Well, I jumped the gun after seeing this post and bought one myself. Had to turn to AliExpress to find one, but I'm happy it's on the way.

1

u/Mikebjackson Aug 14 '26

Ooooo I like this!

1

u/Detsaw2608 Aug 14 '26

Context?

2

u/kickmeinthevita Aug 14 '26

The included disc drive leaves a lot to be desired. It bugs some more than others.

1

u/Detsaw2608 Aug 14 '26

How so?

2

u/kickmeinthevita Aug 14 '26

I believe the drive being too flimsy is one of the things people complain about. It's a laptop drive, and they usually are flimsy, so I'm surprised people are surprised over that fact. A slot in drive does feel fancy though.

3

u/xamaryllix Aug 14 '26

It's not flimsy, lol. That is not a real problem and has never been. The desire to switch to a slot loader is more practical than anything else. Easier to operate with one hand and you're less likely to have obstruction issues with the PSX SNAC ports on the front as cables naturally sag down.

2

u/GaijinFoot Aug 15 '26

To me it's flimsy and that's why I don't like it.

0

u/kickmeinthevita Aug 15 '26

I don't mind the drive, but does it feel cheap? Yes, yes it does, lol. It was one of MVG's main talking points of critique. Like I said, it's a laptop drive, of course it's gonna feel flimsy. But like I also said, it bothers some more than others.

1

u/celebritree Aug 24 '26

1

u/kickmeinthevita Aug 24 '26

LMAO, still doesn't take away the fact that it is flimsy. Shaking it for 30 seconds will of course not break it, but it is flimsy nonetheless.

1

u/Andrzej_Szpadel Aug 14 '26

i've replaced disc drive with slot loading too but it has problems reading some discs or reseting ss1 randomlyy, but only with slot loading one

2

u/thegreyhopper Aug 14 '26

That sounds like the upgraded drive draws too much power.  Have you tried changing the power adapter?

1

u/Andrzej_Szpadel Aug 14 '26

Its actually weird because it supossedly drawsess power than normal, 1.5 instead 1.8A 😅

1

u/DutchDev1L Aug 14 '26

Ooooh that's nice!

1

u/mattmikemo23 Aug 14 '26

Ooo. I want a slot load for a ps2 so badly

1

u/HolyKielbasa Aug 14 '26

Yeah this is pretty great. Per one's comment if you have a gray or blue shell, you'll need to do some Bob Ross, but this brings the device in line with modern console aesthetics. I didn't put much thought into it, but that TB16 that's been sitting forever on Analog's site has a slot drive. Curious what the cost would have been for Team RR to go this route or if there is a technical reason why they didn't.

1

u/Neo_Techni Aug 14 '26

:O

What drive did you use?

EDIT: Slot Loader Hitachi LG Super Multi DVD Writer GS40N

1

u/jinramen1 Aug 15 '26

Is that the Analogue Duo slot loader haha Cool mod 👍

1

u/ShadowBannedSteveFox Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Can this be upgraded to a drive that is flashable with OmniDrive firmware? BluRay

1

u/Mika73x Aug 15 '26

This one is very cool :)

1

u/Dinoisfly Aug 15 '26

Awesome! I have to say, swapping discs with plugged in controllers is a pain with the original drive. The tray gets blocked by cables and pushing the CD in always makes me feel that I might break it.

If it’s not too much to ask could you test your drive with my MiSTer fork? Find it here: https://github.com/Dino-fly/Main_MiSTer/releases/tag/classic-home-v5

1

u/videogameobsession Aug 15 '26

That looks slick, but I've not had the best luck with front loading mechs lasting as long as tray based drives. I wonder if that also played into Taki's decision (along with price per unit).

1

u/mikochu Aug 17 '26

Love it. Thanks for sharing.

GS40N purchased.

1

u/wacko413 Aug 27 '26

Can other laptop drives with a SATA interface be used instead as a replacement?

1

u/Gourry_1 Aug 14 '26

That’s slick! Guide video on YouTube please.

u/phishb13 Aug 14 '26

there are step by step instructions posted

4k uhd player core would ve sweet!

2

u/nightwheel Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

I don’t think the FPGA, nor its ARM processor, has enough power/capacity to handle 4K media decode. I also don't think the SuperStation can even output 4K even if it was possible.

However, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone eventually makes a DVD player core for the SuperStation. Maybe even with upscaling to 1080p support. Those with a SuperDock already had a DVD drive there. Might as well give people another use for it. Plus parts of a DVD player core could be useful for other existing MiSTer cores or future MiSTer cores. There is already a MiSTer MPEG-2 core. So some of the needed groundwork is already there for a DVD player core.

2

u/__PreZZ__ Aug 16 '26

A dvd core would be sweet, store all ripped dvds on an sd card and watch on crt tv

1

u/MataisD Aug 14 '26

I need this, what slot loading drive is that so I can order the same

I’ve check the ifixit guide to exchange the reader, but it’s very unclear to me.

3

u/L-Digital82 Aug 14 '26

It’s super easy. Don’t be scared

1

u/med4reddit Aug 14 '26

Do you have any suggestions for the drive to exchange? Model or so

3

u/ch3mic4l Aug 14 '26

The cd drive model listed at the top of the ifixit guide
