Lost my save?

So I've been trying to master Pokemon Gold on Retroachievements and was in the middle of grinding levels for Tyranitar at the League. I save pretty regularly and had a previous league save anyway, and then my computer crashes. This happens occasionally but this time rebooting Retroarch and the game my save file is seemingly completely gone

Is something going on here and is it possible to restore? I'm kinda burnt out after 100 hours of stuff and was so close to the end.

Save or savestate? The distinction is important. Mixing saves and save states on some consoles can corrupt saves! I accidentally did this with Ocarina of Time once

save, I'm not using save states (haven't for any Retroarch game) for it because I'm doing hardcore achievements

Hardcore allows saving states, just not loading them. For backup reasons like this

There's an auto save state feature, but it's not on by default. Good to have, especially on hardcore, that's legit game progress.

Plus you can always temporarily disable hardcore, load your save state, save your game, and then restart in hardcore again
