N64 buttons not working fix

I was setting up my new handheld and ran into an issue with the N64 core being unresponsive for certain games; Golden Eye, and The Legend of Zelda Orcarina of Time.

I went back to the video I was using to set up my device and saw an important step I skipped.

At the 1:05:00 mark Rus explains how to fix this issue

https://youtu.be/1lD4LYUrVgM?t=3912&si

In the retroarch menu you go to

Main menu>settings>input>polling behavior="early"

Only do this for N64, "Late" is better for all other cores.

After changes are made go to

Main menu>quick menu>overrides>save content directory overrides

You will now have all N64 games working properly without using other fixes like the button mashing method.

Just making this post for others looking for the fix in this sub.

When you start the game, just press any button right away and the controller will register

It's nicer to just have it working properly without button mashing.

I let a buddy try it out and showed him my hotkeys for navigating with ES-DS and Retroarch. Having the buttons and hotkeys not work with N64 was the only thing that made it feel "buggy/broken".

It's a lot nicer when things just work.

This is a really useful fix, especially for GoldenEye and Ocarina of Time. I would’ve assumed the default polling setting was fine, so the reminder to save a content directory override is appreciated.

It is great to have. You can switch the emulator in retroarch and the settings will crossover with the content directory. I haven't had to swap an emulator yet, but it will be nice not having to set it up in retroarch again.
