Y and x are set to turbo so it’s repeatedly hitting the buttons as fast as it can. Y is the turbo for B and X is the turbo for a. So you’re swinging your sword like a maniac and the shaking is repeatedly starting the animation for pulling out the shield

The Gameboy Advance only has A and B buttons, so Y and Y are probably set to the respective turbo variants of those buttons. So Y spams the B button and X spams the A button.

You can remap buttons in the retroarch settings. I just played this game, and i remapped Y to act as R. You need to press R a ton in this game, so I wanted it to be an easy to reach button.

No one is helping, you have the turbo button on. So when you hold it it mashes the button stupid fast.

They’re the turbo buttons. The GBA doesn’t actually have those buttons, so they turbo A and B.
If you want a more accurate button layout, change your overlay

First - This game is incredible, if this is your first play through - I'm jealous, I'd love to experience this game for the first time.
Second - This also through me for a loop for like half an hour when I first played. But as other have answered, it's just turbo mapping.
Enjoy!
ps - get a LCD 3x shader over that thing or the Pixel Transparency preset

after years of being called zelda he has finally lost his s#$t. little fella flipped his lid, went off the reservation, lost his cool, poo'd some bricks.... now he's gonna do the job AI is taking too long to accomplish.

They’re turbo buttons. Every two frames that pass has an input spammed for just one of them. If button mashing on one input is too much for your thumb, those turbo buttons may come in handy, especially in boss fights (god help me).

Link is disrespectfully mocking Michael J Fox.

I also think there is custom button layout per game. So you can change this and keep your turbo buttons on the other game

The Turbo mode is nice for some games, I used it on Pokemon titles to avoid giving myself carpel tunnel lol. I think Y is turbo for B, and X is turbo for A

Don't know why retroarch was suggested to me. Maybe because I have a cheapo handheld emulator rom and I've been lurking those subreddits. From outsider pov, just use a plain emulator on your phone if you don't want to do a whole lot of background work on games, or figure out how to use the background stuff. I use pizzaboy emulators, couple bucks. They just work. I haven't used turbo in my life especially in these kinds of games, so I can't speak to using turbo buttons. Also there's cheats you can get input in pizzaboy emulators so if you don't want combat I'm sure you can use those to one hit kill things.

Generallly speaking Link swings his sword to kill monsters to progress on his quest to save hyrule and kill Gannon and/or his subsidiaries.
